Turn of Thumbnail Caching for Faster Computer Performance

Today I have developed an interesting computer tricks for you. By default, Windows creates additional files in your memory. When the computer is on, these additional files to make your computer slow.
If you have enough disk space or if you are interested in creating thumbnails for each folder, you can pull these unnecessary files from your computer following this computer tricks:

Thumbnail Shutdown cache / Removing Thumbs.db files
A thumbnail cache is used to store the thumbnail images to view thumbnails in Windows Explorer in Windows. Each time you go to a folder containing the images and movies, Windows creates a model with a Thumbs.db file. So you can see what the picture / movie. This speeds thumbnails for displaying images such how are you do not need smaller images to recalculate each time the user sees the folder. But every photo is taken in a folder of approximately 2 kb.
To disable this function, do the following:
  1. Go to "Start -> Control Panel"
   2. Double-click "Folder Options"
   3. Click the "View" tab
   4. Check the "Do not cache thumbnails (Windows XP) Alternatively, turn off the icon show previews of files "check box (in Windows 7)
5. Click Apply and then click OK
Clear thumbnail cache recovery in Windows
On Windows, the thumbnail cache db files can be found in the hidden system folder:
C: Users username AppData Local Microsoft Windows Explorer
If the thumbnails in Windows Explorer is damaged and does not display correctly, you may need to clear the cache of the image or thumbnail cache files has become too big and wants to free hard disk space. To do this, you can follow these steps:1. Open Disk Cleanup (Go to Run, type cleanmgr)2. Select thumbnail and then click OK.3. Click on the Delete Files button.4. Disk Cleanup now clear the thumbnail cache and close.

Types of installation in Ubuntu 11 04 Natty Narwhal

You can use Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) via one of three types of installtion .

1- Installing from windows using Wubi installer
if you are beginner you can use this step because its very simple just get Wubi installer Wubi is Windows software that installs Ubuntu within a series of virtual hard disk files contained in the Windows filesystem. It then configures a boot-time menu so you can choose between booting into Ubuntu or Windows. If you choose to boot into Ubuntu, a clever trick makes the virtual hard disk files appear to be real disks. As a result, the user will be entirely unaware they�re not using a traditional partition-based installation, as described previously.
Using Wubi to install Ubuntu is just like installing some Windows software, and is equally risk-free. There�s even an uninstall option added to Add/Remove Programs. The only drawback is a slight reduction in performance compared to a traditional installation, and you�ll also find the Ubuntu suspend-to-disk (hibernate) power-saving mode doesn�t work.

2-Dual-booting
If you intend to switch to Ubuntu full-time, installing Ubuntu by repartitioning your computer�s hard disk is best. This involves shrinking the existing Windows partition and creating new partitions alongside for Ubuntu. Following this, Ubuntu is installed and a menu added so you can choose between Ubuntu and Windows at boot-time. Having Ubuntu and Windows side-by-side on a PC is called dual-booting.
This sounds complex, but it�s automated via the Ubuntu installation software. However, there�s a slight risk involved when repartitioning, so it�s very wise to backup essential data first.

3-Virtual computer
By downloading a virtual computer application, such as the free-of- charge VMware Player (www.vmware.cornjproductsjpiayer), you can install Ubuntu so it runs within a program window on the Windows desktop.
A virtual computer is effectively a complete computer recreated in software. It offers an excellent way to trial Ubuntu, although the limitations of the virtual computer software mean you won�t experience Ubuntu to its full advantage (desktop visual effects won�t work, for example). Additionally, you�ll need a powerful PC with over lOB of memory for optimal results

trials and tribulations of Comcast

Its been months since our Comcast Internet service worked. It had worked flawlessly for years but last April the modem started going offline periodically. Finally gave up on it over the summer after at least 6 hours on the phone with their technical support, one in person visit from a tech, and switching out all our hardware. Regrouped in October because the alternate DSL service was so pitiful. One tech came in and found that the insulation housing for the cable going from street to house was stripped over a meter long section. We both agreed this must be it. Of course, 15 minutes after the tech left the modem went offline again. Two weeks later I scheduled another tech who immediately went to the pole across the street, replaced some hardware and voila, after at least half a year we have reliable service again. Moral: persistence pays. Amazement: Comcast technical support on the phone is always certain that its you who is doing something wrong. They never think it could be a physical hardware issue. Have to add that everyone at Comcast was always nice about it and I picked up various credits along the way.

Translating the language of PDF documents while preserving formatting

Recently I got the PDF version of the user manual of my car. Since it was a Japanese domestic vehicle, the manual was only available in Japanese. I wanted to translate this to English but couldnt find a proper set of instructions to do it online. First I tried Google translate, which works pretty well for translating stuff across many languages, but it only gives you a plain-text translated output without any PDF formatting/images/pages etc.

I found a simple set of steps to translate PDF documents while preserving formatting, after trying various FREE options available online.

If the PDF is password-protected, use http://smallpdf.com/unlock-pdf to remove the password. If not, you can skip this step.
Convert your PDF to Html using https://cloudconvert.com/pdf-to-html
Download the generated Html and open it using Google Chrome.
Right click in Google Chrome, and click "Translate to English". This will translate everything to English using Google Translate service while preserving formatting and images.
Right click and "Save As" to save the translated Html to a folder.

Thats it. Furthermore, if you know CSS, you can use any CSS editor and change global CSS styles to adjust font size, colors, alignments etc. in order to fix any remaining formatting issues.

TYPES OF VIRUSES

There are several different categories of viruses and malware. Below I list and discuss some of the most common types of computer viruses.

Trojan Horse:A trojan horse program has the appearance of having a useful and desired function. While it may advertise its activity after launching, this information is not apparent to the user beforehand. Secretly the program performs other, undesired functions. A Trojan Horse neither replicates nor copies itself, but causes damage or compromises the security of the computer. A Trojan Horse must be sent by someone or carried by another program and may arrive in the form of a joke program or software of some sort. The malicious functionality of a Trojan Horse may be anything undesirable for a computer user, including data destruction or compromising a system by providing a means for another computer to gain access, thus bypassing normal access controls.

Worms:
A worm is a program that makes and facilitates the distribution of copies of itself; for example, from one disk drive to another, or by copying itself using email or another transport mechanism. The worm may do damage and compromise the security of the computer. It may arrive via exploitation of a system vulnerability or by clicking on an infected e-mail.

Bootsector Virus:
A virus which attaches itself to the first part of the hard disk that is read by the computer upon bootup. These are normally spread by floppy disks.

Macro Virus:
Macro viruses are viruses that use another applications macro programming language to distribute themselves. They infect documents such as MS Word or MS Excel and are typically spread to other similar documents.

Memory Resident Viruses:
Memory Resident Viruses reside in a computers volitale memory (RAM). They are initiated from a virus which runs on the computer and they stay in memory after its initiating program closes.

Rootkit Virus:
A rootkit virus is an undetectable virus which attempts to allow someone to gain control of a computer system. The term rootkit comes from the linux administrator root user. These viruses are usually installed by trojans and are normally disguised as operating system files.

Logic Bombs/Time Bombs:
These are viruses which are programmed to initiate at a specific date or when a specific event occurs. Some examples are a virus which deletes your photos on Halloween, or a virus which deletes a database table if a certain employee gets fired.

Cursed and Blessed tools are a little different. They are a seprate set of tools. You need to dig to find the Cursed tools in the Winter/ Lake Mine. Once you locate the Cursed tool you have to follow a certain method to change them into Blessed Tools. Cursed tools are a huge drain on your characters fatigue to use. Blessed tools can do as much as a Cursed Tool, but don�t require as much stamina to do so.

Once you�ve been able to change all your Cursed Tools into Blessed ones, a new ore will appear in the Spring Mine. The Mythic Ore can be found on the 60th level or below. You can use that ore to convert your Blessed Tools into their final form.

Ubuntu Minimize programs on single click of the Unity launcher icon

This is a very useful piece of functionality that is somehow disabled by default...

First you need to install CompizConfig Settings Manager:

 sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

You can now start CCSM and click on the Ubuntu Unity Plugin icon. Here on the Launcher tab click on the checkbox next to "Minimize Single Window Applications (Unsupported)"

Twitter Sentiment Analysis of March Madness

With March Madness officially over (and congrats to the Louisville Cardinals on a great season; thanks for winning my bracket pool), I thought I should pass along this article I came across regarding an application of Twitter sentiment analysis in the world of sports. The article at this link: http://www.vertica.com/2013/03/20/a-method-to-the-march-madness/ details how researchers used Twitter data to do sentiment analysis about NCAA basketball. Their model and results were presented recently at the MIT Sloan Sports Conference (which I really want to attend some day) in order to see if Twitter sentiment could predict the level of success of certain teams. The researchers hypothesized that those teams or players with a large number of tweets about them were more likely to be more successful due to the large number of people talking about them. Unfortanately, since the Sloan Conference was held before the actual start of what is commonly know as "March Madness" aka the NCAA Mens Basketball Tournament, the Twitter data used was an approximately one-week sample spanning the end of the regular season and beginning of the conference tournament games.

The researchers limited the tweets they looked at to teams which were ranked in the top 25 of the AP poll at the time the data was collected, as well as top scorers from across college basketball. The researchers were able to data-mine almost 500,000 tweets in the week-long period and they show some interesting results when breaking the sentiment analysis down by team and player. Unsurprisingly, Michigans Trey Burke was the leader in positive sentiment analysis during the time period. This should not be a ground-breaking revelation because at the conclusion of the season he was named the National Player of the Year by the AP, and anyone who watched him carry Michigan to the national title game the past 2+ weeks knows how good he is. Apparently though, being good means getting a lot of Twitter love. Most of the players heading the largest sentiment graphic were well-known stars, although I did notice an absence of players from smaller schools having big years, such as Creightons Doug McDermott. I guess when you are not on TV every week the Twitterverse isnt all that interested in you. The other player I found a surprising amount of love for was Kentucky center Nerlens Noel. For those of you who dont know, Noel injured a knee earlier in the year and was not even playing at the time the data was mined, but still got a surprising amount of sentiment. My only guess is that UK fans were collectively whining about how the would have made the tourney had he not been injured.

Data about individual teams is only briefly mentioned in the article, with only a supporting graphic showing the sentiment for the Kansas Jayhawks, but the authors did include a note that traditional powerhouse teams led the way in tweet volume, which was not at all surprising. The final thing that really surprised me was the volume of tweets coming from overseas, particularly London. The United Kingdom is not generally know as a basketball fan country, sticking mostly to soccer, but tweets out of London outpaced many major American cities, which was surprising to say the least. Even more impressive is that most people there are asleep when games are being played over here, meaning the Brits are dedicated enough to check up on happenings around college hoops the next day, then tweet about it retroactively. I got some cool insights out of this article, and it concludes with a challenge to all of us to try and use their HP Vertica platform to generate a model combining Twitter sentiment analysis and statistics to try and predict the winner. Its a little late to try it out until next year, but I will be keeping a close eye on their blog to see if anyone gave it their best shot.

Ubuntu is W3Techs Operating System of the Year 2015

Ubuntu is slowly but steadily improving its footprint in the web server space. W3Tech provides some of the most reliable data regarding the use of various technologies in the web server space. According to W3Techs latest set of data, Ubuntu is now commanding 11.1% market-share among websites whose operating system we know.

Up from a meagre 4% share in 2011, Ubuntus is now used by 11.1% of all the websites whose operating system we know. This according to the latest set of web server usage statistics released by W3Techs.

This massive surge is market-share over the years are among the reasons why Ubuntu grabbed the top spot among operating systems in web-server space in the W3Techs survey 2015. Ubuntu is followed by Gentoo while Scientific Linux came in at a surprising no.3 position. Last years winner, Debian, failed to feature in the top 3. Windows on the other hand has never been able to regain its pole position since 2010.

Other open source technologies such as Wordpress, Drupal, Nginx, JQuery etc. feature prominently in the survey. Wordpress and Drupal remains the most popular content management systems in use even today. WordPress reached an impressive milestone this year by running a quarter of the web. Students make a statement on the issue appear to be of the conversation and jokes. This situation makes it difficult the task is not easy to get rid of teachers because of the negative elements that apply to them, moreover, if a political issue. How about the discipline NUTP see now, whether it is up to the level of concern? Current Students often do surprise to the public. Students increasingly worrying social problem because they not only bullying or truancy, even rape, killing, injuring people and involved with drugs. Student discipline issues should be taken seriously. However, it is not the job of educators alone. Parents need to act quickly to identify its closest partners for their movement is controlled. This effort to claim the responsibility of all parties that the misconduct can be corrected from its beginning. I also believe that caning helps to discipline the student. This should not be a big issue as long as the user-based implementation of a warning letter to the misconduct to parents. This is important because I do not want teachers to court because of acts outside the boundaries of their faith, while at first to teach. In overcoming the social problems of students, I hope that all parties to consider the best solutions rather than promote this issue. For example, a school for female students is not a step already
