Ubuntu MATE 16 10 Yakkety Yak Gets A Unity HUD Like Searchable Menu
Ubuntu MATE 16 10 Yakkety Yak Gets A Unity HUD Like Searchable Menu
MATE HUD, a Unity HUD-like tool that allows searching through an applications menu, was recently uploaded to the official Yakkety Yak repositories, and is available (but not enabled) by default in Ubuntu MATE 16.10.
MATE HUD is a fork of i3-hud-menu, which weve covered recently, with a few changes:
- xprop was replaced with a Python implementation;
- rofi is used instead of dmenu;
- rofi is automatically themed based on the current GTK theme;
- the settings (including configurable keyboard shortcut) are stored in Dconf (org > mate > hud).
Slightly off-topic: Rofi is a lot like dmenu, with various improvements, like mouse support (allows selecting items using the mouse; dmenu does not). Furthermore, Rofi provides a window switcher, run dialog and SSH launcher. Check it out HERE. Youll find Rofi in the official Ubuntu repositories (15.10+).
Like i3-hud-menu, MATE HUD has some limitations, like not supporting Qt applications, Firefox, Thunderbird, or LibreOffice. It can also break the LibreOffice menu completely, as long as the "libreoffice-gtk" desktop integration package is installed. Check out our i3-hud-menu article for more information.
To try MATE HUD, you need to be running the latest Ubuntu MATE 16.10 Yakkety Yak. After installing all the available updates, you should see an option in MATE Tweak (under "Panel") that allows enabling MATE HUD:
If you cant see this option, make sure youve installed all the available updates (if youre using a repositories mirror, it may take a while until the package is synced). Alternatively, you can install MATE HUD using the following command:
sudo apt install mate-hud
Once installed, restart the session (logout/login) and enable MATE HUD from MATE Tweak.
The default keyboard shortcut for opening MATE HUD is Ctrl + Alt + Space. This can be changed using Dconf Editor, under org > mate > hud.

Ubisoft Janji Benahi Diri Setelah Kritik AC Assasins Creed Unity
Ubisoft Janji Benahi Diri Setelah Kritik AC Assasins Creed Unity
Please Ubisoft, dont ruin The Division!

Ubuntu Natty And Unity
Ubuntu Natty And Unity
When I wrote my last piece on the Unity interface I was criticised for not giving Unity a chance. Which one could argue was fare. Unity was still in development at the time. Now that Unity has been the default desktop interface for Ubuntu desktop edition. Introduced to Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal). My fears about Unity have not yet changed.
Unity simply put is lacking in basic features and Ubunty 11.04 as a whole is somewhat unstable. Ive just noticed at some point the CD automount feature crashes. Apparently this is an issue with gvfs or some such. And lets not forget compatibility with MusicBrainz is still broken.
So to date what are the major problems with 11.04 and Unity.
CD automount invariably crashes. There appears to be no work around or fix other than rebooting.
Speaking of rebooting. For the first time ever my system is now regularly hanging on reboot. This seems to be a Plymouth issue? I could be wrong. But Ive never had this before. All my hardware checks out. So the problem must be software.
Unity has no way to clear the recently used files list. This is a basic feature that has existed on most desktop environments for years. Decades! Even Microsoft can pull this one off without a hitch.
Unity has no way of creating a custom launcher from with in the Unity interface. This again is a very basic feature. A launcher is just a link of a sort. Nothing special about it. Why this feature isnt there is a total mystery. It begs the question which type of people Canonical thinks the Ubuntu community is made up of? The work around is to create the launcher manually using Gedit. Not really something a beginner would think of. More time than its worth for a power user. I can see why people are abandoning Unity. Unity isnt even aware /bin exists. Anybody would think any sort of run application prompt in Linux would at least be aware of /bin. But no. Thats too hard. But it gets worse. Unity doesnt even let you type the path name of your application. It just doesnt accept it.
Unless Unity is made aware your application exists via the creation of a launcher, its no dice. And unity has no way to create a launcher. So in the age of the ultra slick GUI were reduced to typing at the command terminal just to launch a simple application. And dont get me wrong. Users shouldnt be afraid of the command terminal. But using just to launch a single app is over kill. Its geek masturbation.
MusicBrainz compatibility is broken. MusicBrainz as I understand it was re-jigged to be Gnome 3.x compatible. Ubuntu Natty is still dragging its heals at Gnome 2.x. This is a major let down for an OS that claims to be social from the start.
These problems might not seem massive. But for a desktop user they can be show stoppers. When your music app cant even tell you the name of your audio CD or even mount it automatically in the first place. It doesnt look good. In fact it looks really, really bad. Its not the sort of OS you want to hand out to people. How can we recommend Ubuntu when Canonical are getting such basic features wrong? You cant recommend an OS and then say oh never mind if X doesnt work. Canonical will fix that in the next 6 monthly release. It just doesnt fly. The only positive note is Unity does inprove somewhat in the future. It gets better. But who knows if Canonical will address all the stupid issues that should never have arisen.
At this point in time I feel Canonical would have been better off leaving Unity on the netbook. Developing it in the background while using Gnome 3.x for the time being. Unity just isnt ready for mainstream usage. It gets in the way more than it helps. And when your OS is getting in the way of your work, play or whatever. Its time to find a new OS.
Edit: Alt+F2 still brings up a run command prompt that actually works. Unity is damn confusing. Which brings to mind something else thats missing. An introduction to Unity and what it does.

Ubunty Natty and Unity – Update
Ubunty Natty and Unity – Update
Well another day and more problems.
Firefox crashes constantly. Why is this Canonicals fault? Well Ubuntu doesnt come with vanilla flavoured Firefox. It comes with integrated Ubuntufied Firefox. Which might I also note didnt update to revoke DigiNotar security certificates. I had to remove them manually.
Any extended period on in activity seems to kill Ubuntu. It wont even shut down or reboot. I keep having to press the power button to force the whole machine to shut down. Not good.
All I can say is October is feeling like its a really really long way off. The silver lining is I discovered ALT+F2 actually does still work. I think Ive going to have to keep a better diary of problems I encounter.

Ubuntu 11 10 Oneiric Ocelot Keyboard Shortcuts for Unity

Keyboard Shortcuts
Unity comes equipped with easy and useful keyboard shortcuts. Keyboard shortcuts by pressing combinations of keys can be used to handle applications, windows and graphical user interface without using the mouse. Using keyboard shortcuts may seem a bit awkward at first, but the key combinations are easy to remember and once you get used to, it helps us to handle our computer with high speed without having to take your hands off the keyboard to hold the mouse.Starter
- Pressed the Super - Show Launcher.
- Pressed the Super and simultaneously pressing the numeric 1, 2 or 3 etc. until 0 - Start or focus on one application. The number corresponds to the position of the icon in the application launcher counting from top to bottom.
- Simultaneously pressing Shift and opens a new instance of your application if it is already open.
- Super - T - Open the trash
- Alt - F1 - Focus on the starter. Use ? / ? to select icon. Pressing Enter starts the application. ? The display list of options for implementation, if any.

- Shift - Tab - Only Ubuntu 11.10 and newest - Skip to the previous lens (when the Dash is open).
- Alt - F2 - Open the Dash in "special service" for execution. Typing the name of a command and pressing Enter executes the command. Entering the path of a file and pressing Enter you open the folder in Nautilus. Pressing Enter before completing the name of a command or run a file or open the first command or file name to enter the characters youve already typed.
- The Dash opens with focused input box to find applications and files. With ? / ? / ? / ? navigate the results. Pressing Enter open the selected application or file. Quick double press of the Enter key after typing text into the search box automatically starts the first search result even if it is not complete (something similar to "feel lucky" in google).

Ubuntu might add torrent search to Unity in Ubuntu 14 04
Ubuntu might add torrent search to Unity in Ubuntu 14 04
Ubuntu received a lot of flak for their high-handedness when they haphazardly added Amazon search results to Unity dash without taking enough feedback from end-users. The fix-ubuntu debacle didnt help either. But with their decision to include torrent search results into Unity, Canonical is undertaking some much needed damage-control exercises.

Canonical planning to include torrent search into Unity
TorrentFreak is reporting that, Canonical is planning to include torrent search capability to upcoming versions of Ubuntu. The tools creator has informed TorrentFreak that, while there is still a lot of work to be done, the aim of the scope is to embed Free Culture directly into the Ubuntu user experience.
In early December 2013, developer David Call revealed that a new torrent scope for Ubuntu was now available. Though he was quite skeptical about having the scope included in Ubuntu by default since it would inevitably turn up unlicensed content. But the wholesome embracing of the project by Canonicals founder Mark Shuttleworth himself laid all apprehensions to rest.
"The tool is super-useful and its perfectly justified to make it available by default. We use torrents for distributing Ubuntu itself. So please dont hold back!?" Shuttleworth replied to Call.
The main motivation behind the torrents scope was to embed Free Culture into the user experience, in the search engine of the OS. The current prototype uses a TPB [The Pirate Bay] backend and is in a very early state in terms of filtering what is presented to the user and how it does it, the developed added. The filtering will be switchable so that users are able to get the full BitTorrent search experience if they so desire.
So will this torrent search scope will find its way into Ubuntu 14.04? Well soon find out. Full interview with developer David Call can be found at TorrentFreak.

Ubisoft Assassin’s Creed – Unity Akan Jadi Awal Baru!
Look at the image below. It cover my active desktop, open website/ blogs/ files with Dash and HUD. I dont like it. If I like to search anything, then why do I need to cover my every work to find it? Say, I am reading an e-book. Now I need to know an word meaning. So I am going to open dictionary. Now if I search dictionary, I need to stop reading for overlapping reason. I do not understand this philosophy created by Mark Shuttleworth. Sorry to say that I wont use Ubuntu 12.04 only for this reason.

I discover/ found freedom with you, I feel speedy with you, I feel safe with you, I connect internet and browse through sites safely with you for long time. But Unity has destroyed my good feelings about you. I do not like your left-side launcher. It cover my desktop space, I have no any way to place applet anywhere, I do not like hiding any site or file which I am reading on that time when I tried to search an application at the same moment. Sorry, I dont like to say bad about you any more. You are my first linux love. And I wont forget you in my life.

Ubuntu Natty and Unity Update
Ubuntu Natty and Unity Update
The stability gained from removing MediaTomb and disabling the screen saver is short lived. So Boinc is going to have to go. Although I suspect Unity is the real culprit. Ive seen some reports that 11.10 Beta 2 is quite good. I might just go a head and install that. Or I could ditch Unity completely. Set up the Gnome 3 PPA and install Gnome Shell/Gnome 3. Alternatively I could go with KDE or LXDE.
I could of course simply ditch Ubuntu and opt for Fedora or Debian. I mean its not like Im a total newbie dependant on Canonical doing everything for me. Ive had bad experiences with distros in the past that used RPMs. So Debian might be more up my street. It is after all what Ubuntu is based on.

Ubuntu 10 10 Will Get Unity Ubuntu Light Interface
Ubuntu 10 10 Will Get Unity Ubuntu Light Interface

Ubuntu Light with Unity launcher
Mark Shuttleworth just announced a version of Ubuntu for the dual-boot called Unity and a range of Light versions of Ubuntu, both netbook and desktop, that are optimised for dual-boot scenarios. These "Light" Ubuntu versions are optimized for the web.
The Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.10 Maverick will get a new panel on the left of the screen which will be used for launching and switching between applications. This panel can be expanded so it is touch-friendly.
The top panel wont be removed since it will be used for the Global Menu which we aleady talked about as well as the window title.
But like Mark said, the Unity interface will also be available for the Desktop, with a dual-boot for instant web access (known as Ubuntu Netbook Light and Ubuntu Desktop Light). However, Ubuntu Light for the Desktop will only be available for OEMs, and you wont be able to download Ubuntu Light from ubuntu.com:

Given the requirement to customise the Light versions for specific hardware, there wont be a general-purpose downloadable image of Ubuntu Light on ubuntu.com.
Unity

Unity already exists and can be installed from a PPA:
Then logout and then log back in selecting Unity UNE Session from your login screen.
There are also a lot of branches to this project which you can get from HERE.

However, Unity for Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.10 will evolve a lot and wont look like it is today. There is currently a mock-up available with an app called Dash which presents files and applications as an overlay. The inspiration for the Dash comes from consoles and devices, which use full-screen, media-rich presentation. We want the Dash to feel device-like, and use the capabilities of modern hardware:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:canonical-dx-team/une
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install unity
Then logout and then log back in selecting Unity UNE Session from your login screen.

Unity will use Mutter for window management, and Zeitgeist will be an anchor component of the file management approach. The interface itself is built in Clutter.
Unity already has its own page @ http://www.canonical.com/products/unity. The webpage says that Ubuntu Light boots to the web in seven seconds on a Dell Mini 10v.
More news on Unity will probably come soon, as the Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat development has already started. Also, UDS is not over yet, so things we might get some new announcements.
Mark Shuttleworth also announced at Ubuntu Developer Summit today that "The Perfect 10" will have new icons, new fonts and many other desktop improvements. Also, he said that Ubuntu 10.10 is set to be released on October 10, 2010 (thats 10.10.10).
