Ubuntu Gnome 13 10

Installed the latest Ubuntu Gnome 13.10 and am getting used to it. It is not the same as my favorite Ubuntu 12.10 with Gnome Shell. In Gnomes effort to simplify and streamline, there is not much flexibility. And flexibility is what Linux should be all about. I logged into the Gnome Classic desktop. I installed the Synaptic package manager, Chrome, Midori, Epiphany, Deluge, Pidgin, Audacious, Banshee, the Thunar File Manager (more like the old Nautilus file manager), Screenlets, and the Greybird Theme. Memory used was 287 MB. It was nice not to have to tweak the location of the open/close/minimize buttons to the right, or remove the global scroll bars, as in previous distributions. I could not add icons, short-cuts, or gadgets to the toolbars. Still working on this. I also had several error messages. These might get better as updates are released.

Using a DVD?
It�s easy to install Ubuntu from a DVD. Here�s what you need to do:
Put the Ubuntu DVD into the DVD-drive
Restart your computer. You should see a welcome screen prompting you to choose your language and giving you the option to install Ubuntu or try it from the DVD.
If you don�t get this menu, read the booting from the DVD guide for more information.

Using a USB drive?
Most newer computers can boot from USB. You should see a welcome screen prompting you to choose your language and giving you the option to install Ubuntu or try it from the CD.
If your computer doesn�t automatically do so, you might need to press the F12 key to bring up the boot menu, but be careful not to hold it down - that can cause an error message.

Prepare to install Ubuntu
- We recommend you plug your computer into a power source
- You should also make sure you have enough space on your computer to install Ubuntu
- We advise you to select Download updates while installing and Install this third-party software now
- You should also stay connected to the internet so you can get the latest updates while you install Ubuntu
- If you�re not connected to the internet, we�ll help you set up wireless at the next step

Set up wireless
If you are not connected to the internet, you will be asked to select a wireless network, if available. We advise you to connect during the installation so we can ensure your machine is up to date. So, if you set up your wireless network at this point, it�s worth then clicking the Back button to go back to the last screen (Preparing to install Ubuntu) and ticking the box marked �Download updates while installing�.

Allocate drive space
Use the checkboxes to choose whether you�d like to Install Ubuntu alongside another operating system, delete your existing operating system and replace it with Ubuntu, or � if you�re an advanced user � choose the �Something else�option

Begin the installation
Depending on your previous selections, you can now verify that you have chosen the way in which you would like to install Ubuntu. The installation process will begin when you click the Install Now button.
Ubuntu needs about 4.5 GB to install, so add a few extra GB to allow for your files.
Not sure about this step? Windows users can use the Windows installer, which will install and uninstall Ubuntu in the same way as any other Windows application. It�s simpler and completely safe.

Select your location
If you are connected to the internet, this should be done automatically. Check your location is correct and click�Forward� to proceed. If you�re unsure of your time zone, type the name of the town you�re in or click on the map and we�ll help you find it.
TIP: If you�re having problems connecting to the Internet, use the menu in the top-right-hand corner to select a network.

Select your preferred keyboard layout
Click on the language option you need. If you�re not sure, click the �Detect Keyboard Layout� button for help.

Ubuntu Regaining the hibernation option in 13 10

For a while the hibernation option is disabled in ubuntu linux by default. This is because of compatibility issues. There are certain conditions that have to be met for it to work, otherwise it just causes system crashes.

The most important condition is that your swap partition where the contents of your RAM will be saved has to be at least as big as your RAM. You can chack this by typing free in the terminal. If your total swap is larger than your ram, hibernation should work.

You should also manually test hibernation with the sudo pm-hibernate command. If it works, you can restore the menu functionality by running the following command:

 sudo gedit /var/lib/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla

Copy this as the content, save and close the file:

 [Re-enable hibernate by default in upower] 
 Identity=unix-user:* 
 Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate 
 ResultActive=yes 
 [Re-enable hibernate by default in logind] 
 Identity=unix-user:* 
 Action=org.freedesktop.login1.hibernate 
 ResultActive=yes

After the next reboot you should have the hibernate option available again.

Tutorial Install Grub Customizer in Ubuntu 13 10

Grub Customizer is a tools to configure the Grub Menu settings and menu entries. This tools base on graphical interface, so easy to use. So we do not need to make changes grub with syntax. This tools allows to move, remove, rename and edit the bootloader menu entries, set the default operating system, reinstallation of the bootloader to MBR, and etc.

What are the feature of Grub Customizer application? We can give background on the bootloader menu, we can change foreground color of menu list, and etc.

So how to install grub customizer in Ubuntu (this case I use ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander)?

Open terminal by press Ctrl+Alt+T
Then switch to superuser / root user using command: sudo su then type your system password.
Then add the PPA repository by using this command:

add-apt-repository ppa:danielrichter2007/grub-customizer

Then update package lists and install grub-customizer:
apt-get update; apt-get install grub-customizer
Grub customizer has been installed. Open it from Unity Dash and enjoy it!

Ubuntu 13.10 Final

Rilis Ubuntu 13.10 terbaru ini datang bersama paket-paket utama seperti kernel Linux 3.11, lingkungan desktop Gnome 3.8 dan antar muka Unity 7.1. Sementara paket aplikasi lain diantaranya rilis terbaru web browser Mozilla Firefox 24, LibreOffice 4.1, Thunderbird 24, Rhythmbox 2.99 dan masih banyak lagi lainnya.

Berbeda dengan rilis non LTS sebelumnya, rilis Ubuntu 13.10 ini hanya akan mendapat dukungan teknis selama 9 bulan, sementara rilis sebelumnya, Ubuntu 13.04 tetap mendapat dukungan teknis selama 18 bulan.

Di bawah lingkungan desktop Gnome 3.8, Canonical selaku pengembang Ubuntu tetap menyediakan berbagai pilihan antar muka yang dapat Anda install secara langsung dari repositori resmi Ubuntu 13.10. Jika Anda merasa kurang nyaman dengan Unity, maka pilihan untuk menggunakan antar muka Gnome shell baik yang modern maupun classic yang kini merupakan bagian dari gnome shell extension tetap tersedia bagi Anda.

To remove the global menu integration of Unity, remove the indicator-appmenu package with the following command in the terminal:

 sudo apt-get remove indicator-appmenu

To move the window buttons from left to write, copy this to the terminal:

 gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences button-layout :minimize,maximize,close

To put them back to the left:

 gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences button-layout close,maximize,minimize:

Disable overlay scrollbar

 gsettings set com.canonical.desktop.interface scrollbar-mode normal

To change it back enter:

 gsettings set com.canonical.desktop.interface scrollbar-mode overlay-auto
