Twitter in Ubuntu with Turpial

Twitter in Ubuntu with Turpial

I use twitter in Firefox using the Echofon plugin. Its nioce, but what about a native linux twitter client? One client that does come close to being everything that I need is Turpial. Written in Python, Turpial is fast and easy to use. And it does just enough it doesnt pack too many features, but its not bare bones either.
Lets take a look at how to tweet using Turpial.

Getting Started

First off, youll need to install Turpial. If youre using Ubuntu, thats easy you can get it from the Turpial PPA. Just open a terminal window and then enter the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:effie-jayx/turpial
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install turpial
If youre using another Linux distro, and feel like embracing your inner geek, you can download the source code from GitHub and compile it yourself.
Once its installed, you can start Turpial by selecting (in Ubuntu, for example) Applications > Internet > Turpial.

Turpial splash screen

The first time you start Turpial, youll be asked to enter the user name and password for your account. You can also click the Remember my credentials option so you dont have to do that every time you want to use Turpial. Then, click the Connect button.

Logged in

Moving Around

Thats pretty simple. In its default configuration, Turpial has three tabs: one each for all tweets from you and the people you follow, one for replies, and one for direct messages. But not everyone finds that view useful. Some people want a Twitter client that acts more like the popular TweetDeck Desktop. You can turn Turpial into something resembling a TweetDeck clone (more on this in a moment) and get a three-column view:
Three-column view

Readings easy. But what if you want to post? Thats not as obvious as it could be. You need to click the Update Status button (which looks like the Turpial logo). A new window appears, where you can type your tweet and, if you need to, shorten a URL.

Enter a tweet

If you want to reply to a tweet, retweet it, send the person who posted it a direct message, or open a link then just right click on the tweet in the Turpial window. Choose what you want to do from the menu that appears.

Interacting

Configuring Turpial

After youve used it for a while, youll probably want to change the way in which Turpial behaves. The default settings are OK, but theyre not for everyone. Modify the applications settings by clicking the Preferences icon.

Setting preferences

There are six tabs that let you set general options, which columns in Turpial will display notifications of new tweets, the URL shortening service that you want to use, the users that you want to block, the Web browser that you want to use to open links, and a Twitter API proxy to use.
On the General tab, for example, click the Wide Mode option to display all three columns, side by side, in the Turpial window. Or, on the Notification tab, click the Activate sounds option to have Turpial play a sound when a new tweet or message arrives.
How you configure Turpial will depend on your needs and likes. I turn off notifications and sounds, use the bit.ly URL shortener, and tell Turpial to open all links in the Chromium Web browser.

Final Thoughts

Of all the Twitter clients for Linux that Ive worked with, Turpial comes closest to being the perfect application. Its fast, its configurable, and its easy to use. It might not have every feature and function imaginable, but it does everything the average Twitter user needs it to do.

So I was getting all sort of weird errors due to mismatch in the dn. Then we decided to switch to Apache Directory Studio from OpenLDAP, as it is more user-friendly. Finally, I got Tyk configured with LDAP, thanks to Apache Directory Studio.

First, I had to configure the profiles.json of Tyk.

Trident ML Indexing Sentiment Classification results with ElasticSearch

Trident ML Indexing Sentiment Classification results with ElasticSearch

In Storm, we may have scenarios in which we like to index results obtained from real-time processing or machine learning into a search and analytics engine. For example, we may have some text streaming in from Kafka messaging system which will go through a TwitterSentimentClassifier (which is available in Trident-ML). After that, we may wish to save the text together with the classified sentiment label as an indexed document in ElasticSearch. This post shows one way to realize such an implementation.

First create a Maven project (e.g. with groupId="com.memeanalytics" and artifactId="es-create-index"), the complete source code of the project can be downloaded from the link below:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/113201788/storm/es-create-index.tar.gz

Configure pom.xml and libraries to be used

Before we proceed, I would like to discuss how to write a elasticsearch client which is compatible with Trident-ML as we will be using both in this project. Traditionally an elasticsearch java client can be implemented using native code such as this:

import static org.elasticsearch.node.NodeBuiler.*;

Node node=nodeBuilder().clusterName("elasticsearch").node();
Client client=node.getClient();

//TODO HERE: put document, delete document, etc using the client

node.close();

The above code requires the following dependency in pom.xml:

<dependency>
<groupId>org.elasticsearch</groupId>
<artifactId>elasticsearch</artifactId>
<version>1.4.0</version>
</dependency>

However, as the pom and coding of this library has dependency on lucene-core [version=3.6.0] that is an older version that is not compatible with lucene-analyzers [version=3.6.2] which is currently one of Trident-MLs dependency (The TwitterTokenizer in TwitterSentimentClassifier uses this library). As a result, the elasticsearch library above cannot be used if the TwitterSentimentClassifier in Trident-ML is to be used in this project.

Since the above java code and elastic library cannot be used in this project, the project uses httpclient [version=4.3] from org.apache.httpcomponents in its place to communicate with elasticsearch via RESTful api. The httpclient provides CloseableHttpClient and operators such as HttpGet, HttpPut, HttpDelete,

The dependencies section of the pom for this project looks like the following:

<dependency>
<groupId>storm</groupId>
<artifactId>storm</artifactId>
<version>0.9.0.1</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>com.github.pmerienne</groupId>
<artifactId>trident-ml</artifactId>
<version>0.0.4</version>
<scope>provided</scope>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.apache.httpcomponents</groupId>
<artifactId>httpclient</artifactId>
<version>4.3</version>
</dependency>

Spout

Once the pom.xml is properly updated, we can move to implement the code for the Storm spout used in this project. The spout, named TweetCommentSpout, reads tweets from "src/test/resources/twitter-sentiment.csv" and emits them in batch to the Trident topology. the implementation of the spout is shown below:

package com.memeanalytics.es_create_index;

import java.io.BufferedReader;
import java.io.FileInputStream;
import java.io.FileNotFoundException;
import java.io.IOException;
import java.io.InputStreamReader;
import java.util.ArrayList;
import java.util.List;
import java.util.Map;

import backtype.storm.task.TopologyContext;
import backtype.storm.tuple.Fields;
import backtype.storm.tuple.Values;

import com.github.pmerienne.trident.ml.core.TextInstance;
import com.github.pmerienne.trident.ml.preprocessing.EnglishTokenizer;
import com.github.pmerienne.trident.ml.preprocessing.TextTokenizer;

import storm.trident.operation.TridentCollector;
import storm.trident.spout.IBatchSpout;

public class TweetCommentSpout implements IBatchSpout {

private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L;
private static List<List<Object>> data=new ArrayList<List<Object>>();

private int batchIndex;
private int batchSize=10;

static{
BufferedReader br=null;
FileInputStream is=null;
String filePath="src/test/resources/twitter-sentiment.csv";
try {
is=new FileInputStream(filePath);
br=new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(is));
String line=null;
while((line=br.readLine())!=null)
{
String[] values = line.split(",");
Integer label=Integer.parseInt(values[0]);
String text=values[1];
// TextTokenizer tokenizer=new EnglishTokenizer();
// List<String> tokens = tokenizer.tokenize(text);
// TextInstance<Integer> instance=new TextInstance<Integer>(label, tokens);
data.add(new Values(text, label));
}
} catch (FileNotFoundException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}catch(IOException ex)
{
ex.printStackTrace();
}

}
public void open(Map conf, TopologyContext context) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub

}

public void emitBatch(long batchId, TridentCollector collector) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
int maxBatchCount = data.size() / batchSize;
if(maxBatchCount > 0 && batchIndex < maxBatchCount)
{
for(int i=(batchSize * batchIndex); i < data.size() && i < (batchIndex+1) * batchSize; ++i)
{
collector.emit(data.get(i));
}
batchIndex++;
}
}

public void ack(long batchId) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub

}

public void close() {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub

}

public Map getComponentConfiguration() {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
return null;
}

public Fields getOutputFields() {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
return new Fields("text", "label");
}

}

The tuples emitted by the spout contains two fields: "text" and "label", the label is ignored, we are going to have the Trident-MLs TweetSentimentClassifier predict the sentiment label for us instead.

Trident operation for ElasticSearch

Next we are going to implement a BaseFilter, named CreateESIndex, which is a Trident operation that create an indexed document in ElasticSearch from each tweet text and its predicted sentiment label. The implementation of the Trident operation is shown below:

package com.memeanalytics.es_create_index;

import java.io.IOException;
import java.text.SimpleDateFormat;
import java.util.Calendar;
import java.util.Date;
import java.util.Map;

import org.apache.http.HttpEntity;
import org.apache.http.client.ClientProtocolException;
import org.apache.http.client.HttpRequestRetryHandler;
import org.apache.http.client.methods.CloseableHttpResponse;
import org.apache.http.client.methods.HttpDelete;
import org.apache.http.client.methods.HttpGet;
import org.apache.http.client.methods.HttpPost;
import org.apache.http.client.methods.HttpPut;
import org.apache.http.entity.StringEntity;
import org.apache.http.impl.client.CloseableHttpClient;
import org.apache.http.impl.client.HttpClients;
import org.apache.http.message.BasicHeader;
import org.apache.http.protocol.HTTP;
import org.apache.http.protocol.HttpContext;
import org.apache.http.util.EntityUtils;

import storm.trident.operation.BaseFilter;
import storm.trident.operation.TridentOperationContext;
import storm.trident.tuple.TridentTuple;

public class CreateESIndex extends BaseFilter{

private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L;
private int esIndex=1;
private String wsUrl="http://127.0.0.1:9200";
private String indexName="twittersentiment"; //must be lowercase
private String typeName="trident";
private CloseableHttpClient client;
private String lastIndexedDocumentIdQueryJson="{"query": { "match_all": {}}, "size": 1,"+
""sort": ["+
"{"+
""_timestamp": {"+
""order": "desc""+
"}"+
"}"+
"]"+
"}";

public boolean isKeep(TridentTuple tuple) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
Boolean prediction =tuple.getBooleanByField("prediction");
String comment=tuple.getStringByField("text");
System.out.println(comment + " >> " + prediction);

if(client != null)
{
HttpPut method=new HttpPut(wsUrl+"/"+indexName+"/"+typeName+"/"+esIndex);

Date currentTime= new Date();
SimpleDateFormat format1 = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd");
SimpleDateFormat format2 = new SimpleDateFormat("HH:mm:ss");
String dateString = format1.format(currentTime)+"T"+format2.format(currentTime);

CloseableHttpResponse response=null;
try{
String json = "{"text":""+comment+"", "prediction":""+prediction+"", "postTime":""+dateString+""}";
System.out.println(json);
StringEntity params=new StringEntity(json);
params.setContentType(new BasicHeader(HTTP.CONTENT_TYPE, "application/json"));

method.setEntity(params);

method.addHeader("Accept", "application/json");
method.addHeader("Content-type", "application/json");

response = client.execute(method);

HttpEntity entity=response.getEntity();
String responseText=EntityUtils.toString(entity);
System.out.println(responseText);
}catch(IOException ex) {
ex.printStackTrace();
}finally {
method.releaseConnection();
}
esIndex++;
}

return true;
}

@Override
public void prepare(Map conf, TridentOperationContext context) {

client=HttpClients.custom().setRetryHandler(new MyRetryHandler()).build();

CloseableHttpResponse response=null;
HttpDelete method=new HttpDelete(wsUrl+"/"+indexName);
try{
response = client.execute(method);
HttpEntity entity=response.getEntity();
String responseBody=EntityUtils.toString(entity);
System.out.println(responseBody);
}catch(IOException ex)
{
ex.printStackTrace();
}
}

private class MyRetryHandler implements HttpRequestRetryHandler {

public boolean retryRequest(IOException arg0, int arg1, HttpContext arg2) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
return false;
}
}

@Override
public void cleanup() {
try {
client.close();
} catch (IOException e) {
// TODO Auto-generated catch block
e.printStackTrace();
}
}

}

In the prepare() method of the CreateESIndex, a RESTful DELETE call is performed to delete all indexed documents under twittersentiment/trident in ElasticSearch. This is to ensure that no data will be under twittersentiment/trident when the bolt is run. Now in its isKeep() method, the tweet text and its associated predicted sentiment label is serialized to a json and sent to elasticsearch via a http PUT call. The CloseableHttpClient object is closed in its cleanup() method.

Trident topology

Now we have the neccessary spout and trident operation, we can define a simple Trident topology which stream tweets-> classified by TwitterSentimentClassifier -> indexed by ElasticSearch. Below is the implementation in the main class:

package com.memeanalytics.es_create_index;

import com.github.pmerienne.trident.ml.nlp.TwitterSentimentClassifier;

import storm.trident.TridentTopology;
import backtype.storm.Config;
import backtype.storm.LocalCluster;
import backtype.storm.generated.StormTopology;
import backtype.storm.tuple.Fields;

public class App
{
public static void main( String[] args )
{
LocalCluster cluster=new LocalCluster();
Config config=new Config();

cluster.submitTopology("TridentWriteToESDemo", config, buildTopology());

try{
Thread.sleep(10000);
}catch(InterruptedException ex)
{

}

cluster.killTopology("TridentWriteToESDemo");
cluster.shutdown();
}

private static StormTopology buildTopology()
{
TridentTopology topology=new TridentTopology();

TweetCommentSpout spout=new TweetCommentSpout();

topology.newStream("classifyAndIndex", spout).each(new Fields("text"), new TwitterSentimentClassifier(), new Fields("prediction")).each(new Fields("text", "prediction"), new CreateESIndex());

return topology.build();
}
}

Once it is completed, run the following command in the project root folder:

> mvn compile exec:java

Unable to install AOL Desktop with blank error message Windows Vista

Unable to install AOL Desktop with blank error message Windows Vista

I recently was asked to resolve another problem with AOL Desktop - the Main.idx had disappeared from the AOL profile folder within ProgramData and the program could not start. After some checks, I decided to completely uninstall and reinstall the AOL software. Although the removal was straightforward, I could not reinstall the software no matter which way I tried. The following error message kept appearing, followed by a completely white square that could only be closed using Task Manager.

Honestly, could this error be any more helpful?
Fortunately, the solution was simple - uninstall Adobe Flash Player for Internet Explorer (ActiveX). As the customer was using Windows Vista, this was unlikely to cause a problem since the latest version of Internet Explorer that runs on Vista is 9.0. This is too old to be useful, and another browser such as Google Chrome or Mozilla FireFox is required for regular browsing. I did not try reinstalling Flash Player after successfully installing AOL Desktop, so Im not sure if similar problems would have returned or not.

Coincidentally, my very next job was also for someone running Windows Vista with a similar problem, though this was with the software for a Brother scanner. Instead of the usual controls for scanning images and files, a white space in the shape of the original program appeared. As before, uninstalling Adobe Flash Player for Internet Explorer did the trick, although the customer did comment that the program looked a bit different than it did before.

I think its likely that there is a problem with Adobe Flash Player 20 and Windows Vista, or perhaps with Internet Explorer 9, or perhaps with any number of different programs - who knows?

Ubuntu Getting Started With AWS CLI

Ubuntu Getting Started With AWS CLI

Prerequisites

This has been tested on Ubuntu 12.04 and 14.04, but may also work on others.

Steps

Installation

Install the tools with the following commands:

sudo apt-get install python-pip -y
sudo pip install awscli

Personal Configuration

If you just want to use this for a single account with manual commands (e.g. not scripts), then perform the following steps. If you want to configure this for multiple accounts and/or scripts, then it is probably best to run the "Setup For Scripts" section instead.

    Run the following command and answer the questions

    aws configure
    When it asks for the default output format, your choices are
    json
    ,
    table
    , or
    text
    . Personally, I use
    json

Setup For Scripts

    If you followed the previous section, then you do not need to run this one.

    Now we need to set up our AWS credentials for automatic authentication

    mkdir $HOME/.aws
    vim $HOME/.aws/config

    File contents

    [default]
    aws_access_key_id = [ID HERE]
    aws_secret_access_key = [KEY HERE]
    region = eu-west-1
    It wont work if you put quotation marks around the values.

    The configuration needs to be there, otherwise you need to set the AWS_CONFIG_FILE environment variable to its location e.g.
    export AWS_CONFIG_FILE="`echo $HOME`/.aws/config"

    Protect the file from other users who have access to the same machine.

    chmod 600 $HOME/.aws/config

Testing

You can test its working with a simple command t fetch the regions from AWS:

aws ec2 describe-regions

Now you can use the CLI to transfer files to and from s3 like so:

aws s3 cp /path/to/local/file.txt s3://my-bucket/sub-folder/file.txt
or the other way around
aws s3 cp s3://my-bucket/sub-folder/file.txt /path/to/local/file.txt
The S3 file movement commands are pretty much the same as with linux so it should feel natural. e.g. cp, mv and the --recursive switch etc

Ubuntu Mini ISO installation Process with Screenshots

Ubuntu Mini ISO installation Process with Screenshots

HOWTO Install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Using Mini ISO

Note:
This is a user friendly guide for New Users to Linux and/or Beginners. If you know this already, then you are in the wrong place :)

1- Download the Mini ISO from here.

2- Check MD5SUM for the ISO you downloaded.

3- If you are willing to install on Real Hardware, then create a LiveCD. Please, do NOT forget to BACKUP your IMPORTANT FILES before carrying on.

4- If you are willing to test that on a Virtual Machine, then you just need to mount the ISO as a LiveCD - depends on what VM you are using.

5- Boot Menu should look like the below Screenshot. Select "Install" and then Press "Enter".

6- Select the language to be used for the installation process from the below list:

7- Select your Location from the below list:

8- Select "United States - en_US.UTF-8" if there is no locale defined of language and country you have selected from the previous step.

9- Select "No" UNLESS you want to Detect your Keyboard Layout.

10- If you press "No" from the previous step, then select the Layout for your country of origin

11- Choose your favorite method for toggling between Keyboard Layouts:

12- Enter the hostname for your system - default is "ubuntu".

13- Choose the Archive Mirror Country - better/easier to choose the mirror in your country from the list:

14. "Continue" unless you do have the HTTP Proxy Information:

15. Write your Full Name:

16- Write your Username:

17- Make sure to choose a strong password:

18- Confirm your password:

19- If you want to Encrypt your Home Directory

20- Confirm Your Time Zone:

21- Here is the most important step. This is how to select the Partitioning Method. The easiest way, is: Guided - Use Entire Disk. Please, understand this is the best way if your HDD is empty and/or you dont need the Data stored on your HDD. You can read the instructions on the below Screenshot:

22- If you decided to do it Manually, this is the Screenshot for that. If you are not familiar with such Partitioning Method, Select "Guided Partitioning" from the list below and press "Enter". More information about Partitioning can be found here.

23- PLEASE, read the note.
To Confirm, Press "Enter".

24- If you are done, review the changes made and select "Finish Partitioning and write changes to Disk" then Press "Enter".

25- The installer now will give you a summary of the changes to your HDD. To confirm, select "Yes" and Press "Enter".

26- Choose "No Automatic Update" unless you know what you are doing.

27- This is the Second Most Important Step. On this Step, you decide what package you want to install/include in your setup. So far, ONLY the core system has been installed. If you want to build your system the way you like and add the package you want, this is a list of what you may need/use. Instructions are below:
Space to Select
Tab to Move
Enter to Activate the selection
** Jump to continue without making any selection will install nothing.

28- Another important step is to choose where to install GRUB (the boot loader). The default selection is "Yes". Please, understand if you carry on with "Yes", this will erase any boot loader current installed in your MBR. So, be careful and you should understand what you are doing - dont make a selection without knowing what is going on. More about GRUB can be found here

29- Because you have previously selected your time zone and your country where you live, select "No" and carry on.

30- You are done :)

SAME PROCESS for 12.10 and 13.04 :)

After you reboot, you will have CLI Screen if you havent chosen any DE to install (Ubuntu Desktop, Lubuntu Desktop, Xubuntu Desktop, Kubuntu Desktop).

Type your username that you selected previously during the installation and your password to log in.

Without installing any package from the package list shown previously in step No. 27, and after installing:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install htop

"htop" will give:
