Twitter fake page http ltwltter com timed out Beware it will steal your password phishing

If you get a Direct message that looks like this:

The first reaction is to click on the short link ppfr.it/434 which will take you to http://t.co/tIdsrtv which will resolve to http://ltwltter.com/timed_out/ (notice the �l� before the �t� of twitter) which will present a FAKE Twitter login page that looks exactly like the Twitter web site with username and password screen:

Please beware � since this is a FAKE login screen � So do NOT enter your login details!

If you do enter your username and password � then the fake page will steal your username and password and then redirect you to another fake page:
http://ltwltter.com/status/error/ (notice the �l� before the �t� of twitter)

Once the phishers have harvested your login details then they will send DMs to all of your followers and send them the same �ROFLMAO� message and hope that they fall into the same trap and log in to the fake Twitter page.

Be careful out there and remember to ALWAYS check the URL of the page that you are logging in to.

Twitter in Ubuntu with Turpial

I use twitter in Firefox using the Echofon plugin. Its nioce, but what about a native linux twitter client? One client that does come close to being everything that I need is Turpial. Written in Python, Turpial is fast and easy to use. And it does just enough � it doesn�t pack too many features, but it�s not bare bones either.

Let�s take a look at how to tweet using Turpial.

Getting Started

First off, you�ll need to install Turpial. If you�re using Ubuntu, that�s easy � you can get it from the Turpial PPA. Just open a terminal window and then enter the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:effie-jayx/turpial
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install turpial

If you�re using another Linux distro, and feel like embracing your inner geek, you can download the source code from GitHub and compile it yourself.

Once it�s installed, you can start Turpial by selecting (in Ubuntu, for example) �Applications > Internet > Turpial�.

The first time you start Turpial, you�ll be asked to enter the user name and password for your account. You can also click the Remember my credentials option so you don�t have to do that every time you want to use Turpial. Then, click the Connect button.

Moving Around

That�s pretty simple. In its default configuration, Turpial has three tabs: one each for all tweets from you and the people you follow, one for replies, and one for direct messages. But not everyone finds that view useful. Some people want a Twitter client that acts more like the popular TweetDeck Desktop. You can turn Turpial into something resembling a TweetDeck clone (more on this in a moment) and get a three-column view:

Reading�s easy. But what if you want to post? That�s not as obvious as it could be. You need to click the Update Status button (which looks like the Turpial logo). A new window appears, where you can type your tweet and, if you need to, shorten a URL.

If you want to reply to a tweet, retweet it, send the person who posted it a direct message, or open a link then just right click on the tweet in the Turpial window. Choose what you want to do from the menu that appears.

Configuring Turpial

After you�ve used it for a while, you�ll probably want to change the way in which Turpial behaves. The default settings are OK, but they�re not for everyone. Modify the application�s settings by clicking the Preferences icon.

There are six tabs that let you set general options, which columns in Turpial will display notifications of new tweets, the URL shortening service that you want to use, the users that you want to block, the Web browser that you want to use to open links, and a Twitter API proxy to use.

On the General tab, for example, click the Wide Mode option to display all three columns, side by side, in the Turpial window. Or, on the Notification tab, click the Activate sounds option to have Turpial play a sound when a new tweet or message arrives.

How you configure Turpial will depend on your needs and likes. I turn off notifications and sounds, use the bit.ly URL shortener, and tell Turpial to open all links in the Chromium Web browser.

Final Thoughts

Of all the Twitter clients for Linux that I�ve worked with, Turpial comes closest to being the perfect application. It�s fast, it�s configurable, and it�s easy to use. It might not have every feature and function imaginable, but it does everything the average Twitter user needs it to do.

Twitter Der tägliche Wahnsinn!

Drei Wochen habe ich exzessiv Twitter betrieben. Ich kann nur davon abraten damit anzufangen.

Folgen um gefolgt zu werden - igitt. Wer kein begehrter Schauspieler ist, der muss fast zwangsl�ufig anderen folgen, auch wenn einem die Person v�llig egal ist. Welch Wahnsinn. Die folgenden zitierten S�tze, die zwischendurch auftauchen, sind Tweets die ich auch bei Twitter gepostet habe.

"Glaube nicht, nur weil dir jemand folgt, dass er sich f�r deine Timeline*1 interessiert! Ja, so pervers ist das hier."

Einmal damit angefangen, zieht es dich immer weiter in die F�nge. Sinnloses Folgen und das Hoffen dass jemand deine Tweets*2 favorisiert oder retweetet*3. OMG!

"Jeder Fav*4 eine Streicheleinheit. Jeder Retweet ein Orgasmus."

Mal im Ernst, wie kann man 10.293 Leuten folgen? Das liest doch keine Sau was die alle twittern. Die Timeline zu verfolgen kostet schon bei 50 Leuten den ganzen Tag - ununterbrochen. Es ist schier unm�glich. Doch wer als NoName konsequent keinem folgt, der bleibt allein auf weiter Flur - mit Null Followern.

"Du bist weder Tagesschau noch Schweigh�fer? Dann musst du alle 5 min. Witze schreiben, sonst bleibst du ewig eine Null!"

Wer twittert will Aufmerksamkeit bekommen. Sonst kann ich gleich bei WhatsApp bleiben, wenn es nur darum geht mich mit jemanden auszutauschen. Sogar mit mehr als nur 140 Zeichen. Bei vielen geht wirklich jeder Pups in die Timeline. Was in diesem Moment gegessen wird, wo ich stehe und gehe. Laaangweilig!

Hast du einen gro�en Account, kannst du den gr��ten M�ll schreiben und alle finden es toll. Neue Follower kommen hinzu. Es wird favorisiert und retweetet bis die Tasten gl�hen.

Kleiner Account? Schreibst du den gleichen M�ll, hast du gleich f�nf Entfolger und Favs kannst du dir in die Haare schmieren. Willkommen bei Twitter. Neben sinnfreien Tweets schreiben, ist Folgen und Entfolgen der Hauptsport bei Twitter.

Pure Zeitverschwendung. Wenn Twitter als App auf dem Handy installiert ist, dann raubt es dir jegliche Zeit. Morgens nach dem Aufstehen, vor dem ersten Gang ins Bad, erstmal die Timeline checken. Gehts noch? Unterwegs der st�ndige Blick aufs Handy. Einmal sch�tteln bitte: Hallo Welt, hier ist die Realit�t!

Die Frage Wann habe ich den letzten Brief geschrieben? - An das Finanzamt? - ist so angestaubt wie das Telefon mit W�hlscheibe. Heute ist eher die Frage Wann habe ich mich zuletzt mit jemanden pers�nlich unterhalten?

Die gleichen Ph�nomene und S�chte sind sicher auch bei Facebook oder Google+ zu beobachten. Allerdings sehe ich gegen�ber Twitter noch einen entscheidenden Unterschied: Twitter ist extrem kurzweilig. Ein geschriebener Tweet, der nicht gefavt oder retweetet wird, hat es schon nach gef�hlten 5 min. dahingerafft. Da jede Sekunde Tausende Tweets nachrutschen. Da bleibt ein Posting bei Facebook oder Google+ l�nger am Leben.

"Tweets sind wie Wassertropfen. In dem Moment wo du einen siehst, kommen Tausende hinterher."

Ich habe es satt. Nichts hat mich bisher mehr frustriert als Twitter.

Twitter now lets anyone send you direct messages

Twitter has introduced an optional feature that lets you receive direct messages from anyone, even users you dont follow or who dont follow you.

Luckily the "feature" is off by default - you can turn it on in the settings menu.

The feature is accompanied by a new "Messages" button in the iOS and Android Twitter apps as well.

Twitter first opened your inbox to direct messages from anyone in 2013, but it quickly eliminated the feature.

Now its returned, likely so the social network can try to stake a place in the burgeoning world of messaging apps - where Facebooks so-far successfulefforts have doubtless ruffled Twitters feathers.

In addition Twitter pointed out in a blog post that less restricted DMing will let users communicate more easily with businesses, something well all be able to agree on when we no longer have to follow Comcasts support account back just to yell at it privately.

But anyone who turns the feature on will open themselves up to private abuse from strangers to complement the public abuse many are already enduring - something Twitter still needs to address in a meaningful way, and hopefully soon.

It�s been a wee while since we last heard a peep from desktop Twitter application �Turpial�, but a new release with some notable new changes has finally arrived.

Turpial 1.5

The first thing one notices after upgrading to Turpial 1.5 is the use of Faenza-style icons. Whilst this �change� may annoy those who prefer their applications to �blend� in with their native theme there�s no denying that Turpial looks all the better for it.

Multi-column

Turpial runs in single column mode by default but a �wide�, tweet-deck style mode can be enabled via the �Preferences� dialog.

Whilst this isn�t a new feature per se, the Direct Messages pane/tab now displays �sent� messages as well as messages received. A minor, but welcome touch.

Image uploading

Also present is a neat �wizard� for uploading images to Twitpic, Twitgoo, YFrog, Plixi and others.

Other changes notable in Turpial 1.5 include:

Support for lists and personalized columns
Colored tweets according to their status (yellow when read. blue when unread, etc)
Identi.ca support
Enhanced Notifications (with further options)
Autoscrolling

Drawbacks

As polished a release as this is there are still flaws to using it over Gwibber in Ubuntu.

Firstly there is no Unity integration. That�s a shame as a quicklist with a link to the �tweetbox� would be an awesome and relatively simple feature to include.

Running the application in Unity is also a confusing affair: once Turpial is closed you�re unable to tell if it�s still running. It displays no indicator, isn�t listed in the Messaging Menu and the Unity launcher will disappear/not signal it�s running.

So you�d be forgiven for thinking that it is, in fact, closed. Well, until you hear chirping and see notification bubbles popping up every few minutes, that is.

To install Turpial 1.5 in Ubuntu add the official Turpial PPA � �effie-jayx/turpial� � to your Software Sources.

Alternatively run the following commands in a Terminal session: -

So Ive been using Twitter for a couple of days now and although I believe that I finally "get it", I have to say that like anything these days the community is key and thats what has left me a little disappointed here.

I was kind of hoping that it would allow you to find like-minded people and generate some discussions of sorts, whether it was about the latest movie or a plea for help but for me personally, it just seems like a lot of broadcasting with very little going on in terms of actual conversations.

Now I freely admit that what Im saying could be boring (I have 28 followers so far), pointless or whatever but even when Ive replied to comments other people have made it doesnt seem to generate much in the way of discourse. Perhaps I need to use it longer or perhaps I dont get it after all but it does seem like being on an island at times.

Twitter Sentiment Analysis of March Madness

With March Madness officially over (and congrats to the Louisville Cardinals on a great season; thanks for winning my bracket pool), I thought I should pass along this article I came across regarding an application of Twitter sentiment analysis in the world of sports. The article at this link: http://www.vertica.com/2013/03/20/a-method-to-the-march-madness/ details how researchers used Twitter data to do sentiment analysis about NCAA basketball. Their model and results were presented recently at the MIT Sloan Sports Conference (which I really want to attend some day) in order to see if Twitter sentiment could predict the level of success of certain teams. The researchers hypothesized that those teams or players with a large number of tweets about them were more likely to be more successful due to the large number of people talking about them. Unfortanately, since the Sloan Conference was held before the actual start of what is commonly know as "March Madness" aka the NCAA Mens Basketball Tournament, the Twitter data used was an approximately one-week sample spanning the end of the regular season and beginning of the conference tournament games.

The researchers limited the tweets they looked at to teams which were ranked in the top 25 of the AP poll at the time the data was collected, as well as top scorers from across college basketball. The researchers were able to data-mine almost 500,000 tweets in the week-long period and they show some interesting results when breaking the sentiment analysis down by team and player. Unsurprisingly, Michigans Trey Burke was the leader in positive sentiment analysis during the time period. This should not be a ground-breaking revelation because at the conclusion of the season he was named the National Player of the Year by the AP, and anyone who watched him carry Michigan to the national title game the past 2+ weeks knows how good he is. Apparently though, being good means getting a lot of Twitter love. Most of the players heading the largest sentiment graphic were well-known stars, although I did notice an absence of players from smaller schools having big years, such as Creightons Doug McDermott. I guess when you are not on TV every week the Twitterverse isnt all that interested in you. The other player I found a surprising amount of love for was Kentucky center Nerlens Noel. For those of you who dont know, Noel injured a knee earlier in the year and was not even playing at the time the data was mined, but still got a surprising amount of sentiment. My only guess is that UK fans were collectively whining about how the would have made the tourney had he not been injured.

Data about individual teams is only briefly mentioned in the article, with only a supporting graphic showing the sentiment for the Kansas Jayhawks, but the authors did include a note that traditional powerhouse teams led the way in tweet volume, which was not at all surprising. The final thing that really surprised me was the volume of tweets coming from overseas, particularly London. The United Kingdom is not generally know as a basketball fan country, sticking mostly to soccer, but tweets out of London outpaced many major American cities, which was surprising to say the least. Even more impressive is that most people there are asleep when games are being played over here, meaning the Brits are dedicated enough to check up on happenings around college hoops the next day, then tweet about it retroactively. I got some cool insights out of this article, and it concludes with a challenge to all of us to try and use their HP Vertica platform to generate a model combining Twitter sentiment analysis and statistics to try and predict the winner. Its a little late to try it out until next year, but I will be keeping a close eye on their blog to see if anyone gave it their best shot.

Twitter blog using blogger blog

I have just visit blog.twitter.com and found that it is using blogger.com hosting blog. I am gettng surprise to see that they have not put any link to blogger.com. I guess if they use wordpress blog then they must use a phrase Proudly powered by wordpress.

My question is why twitter authority have not mention any acknowledgement to blogger. They should write a single line like me. I wrote a single line at the bottom of my blog "Powered by Blogger." This is a common courtesy to using any free service online, but twitter failed to show it.
