Turn of Thumbnail Caching for Faster Computer Performance

Today I have developed an interesting computer tricks for you. By default, Windows creates additional files in your memory. When the computer is on, these additional files to make your computer slow.
If you have enough disk space or if you are interested in creating thumbnails for each folder, you can pull these unnecessary files from your computer following this computer tricks:

Thumbnail Shutdown cache / Removing Thumbs.db files
A thumbnail cache is used to store the thumbnail images to view thumbnails in Windows Explorer in Windows. Each time you go to a folder containing the images and movies, Windows creates a model with a Thumbs.db file. So you can see what the picture / movie. This speeds thumbnails for displaying images such how are you do not need smaller images to recalculate each time the user sees the folder. But every photo is taken in a folder of approximately 2 kb.
To disable this function, do the following:
  1. Go to "Start -> Control Panel"
   2. Double-click "Folder Options"
   3. Click the "View" tab
   4. Check the "Do not cache thumbnails (Windows XP) Alternatively, turn off the icon show previews of files "check box (in Windows 7)
5. Click Apply and then click OK
Clear thumbnail cache recovery in Windows
On Windows, the thumbnail cache db files can be found in the hidden system folder:
C: Users username AppData Local Microsoft Windows Explorer
If the thumbnails in Windows Explorer is damaged and does not display correctly, you may need to clear the cache of the image or thumbnail cache files has become too big and wants to free hard disk space. To do this, you can follow these steps:1. Open Disk Cleanup (Go to Run, type cleanmgr)2. Select thumbnail and then click OK.3. Click on the Delete Files button.4. Disk Cleanup now clear the thumbnail cache and close.

Turn Your Mouse Pointer Into a SpotLight for Presentations

Spotlights are commonly used in concerts and musical theaters to focus an audiences attention on a performer as he moves around the stage.

Ubuntu flavoured 16 04 ISOs for Atom based Intel Compute Sticks

Update: This page refers to earlier work and my latest ISOs and kernel upgrade scripts can be downloaded from my latest post.

When Intel released its Ubuntu Compute Stick it was heavily criticized as being under-specd. Also criticized was the choice of Ubuntu with Unity as it was deemed to be too demanding. With this in mind Ive combined the latest patches and source together with Canonicals kernel source to create a range of ISOs that can work on Intels Atom Compute Sticks from the very basic model to the latest. All include audio over HDMI, wifi and bluetooth together with patches that try to reduce the random freezes that have been known to occur.

First up is Lubuntu. Ive configured it to use ZRAM both as an ISO and once installed. As a light-weight Ubuntu it is highly suitable for the minimalist STCK1A8LFC device.

Next is Ubuntu. Previously it was necessary to use the 64-bit bootloader to use my 16.04 ISO. Now Ive configured it to both run and install using either the 32-bit or 64-bit bootloaders. The key benefit is the ability to easily dual-boot without needing to modify the BIOS.

Finally Ive also incorporated all these features and produced Xubuntu, Ubuntu-Mate and Kubuntu ISOs. This provides a choice now of Ubuntu flavours for the Intel Compute Stick.

One potential draw-back is that each ISO includes a patched kernel to provide the missing functionality meaning it will not get any automatic kernel updates from Canonical. So Ive also developed a manual patching process that allows you to download a script which will then update the kernel.

To try an ISO download it from one of the links below (i.e. the caption below each image) and write it to a USB using either Rufus in Windows or dd in Linux.

Update: If you are using Rufus version 2.3 or above then select Write in DD Image mode when prompted otherwise for version 2.2 and below you should first let Rufus complete and then additionally download bootia32.efi from https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B99O3A0dDe67QWUtek9rdHptMjA and copy the file to the newly created USBs EFIBOOT directory.

Then boot from the USB by pressing the F10 option immediately after powering-on your device. For installation to your device simply run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions.

Remember also to be patient as depending on the speed of your USB it can be anything from 15 to 45 seconds before anything appears on the screen.

If you want to upgrade the kernel to the latest Ubuntu 16.04 (but patched) version first download the upgrade script (click the caption under the image below) , make sure it is executable (use chmod 755 <script>) and then run as root (./<script>). Once the script has finished executing youll need to reboot to use the latest kernel.

As before this is only for Atom based Intel Compute sticks which includes the STCK1A8LFC, STCK1A32WFC, STK1AW32SC and STK1A32SC models.

Unable to verify certificate for vCenter on Horizon View Connection Server

Recently during an outage of my host during to hardware issue in my home lab where my vCenter 6.0 sit on it, resulted some strange behaviour on my View Connection Server 6.1. I encounter the below error message:

When I go to my Horizon View Dashboard, it looks fine.

When I try to remove the vCenter entry under the Server options and adding it back I end up with another error when trying to add the View Composer.

However this is not related to the strange behaviour above. But rather this is due to my login did not contain a domainusername but instead of use just username.

Back to the strange behaviour. It seems my connection to my vCenter via Connection Server has a sudden slowness and the certificate seems to be corrupted. I tried to find a solution to replace the self-signed (in my case) certificate on my View Connection Server however in vain. I tried removing the vCenter and re-adding it back, that does not help.

So I chanced upon some steps by our internal team and use it to resolve my problem and it works.

In summary, this is what was done. First we backup the ADAM database and then we invalid the entry of the vCenter in View Connection Server. Then we try to add the existing vCenter again. So now we have two entry of the vCenter where oneis an invalid entry. Taking from the valid entry certificate thumbprint, we overwrite the invalid ones and remove the latter vCenter entry. Next revert back the entry to previous valid entry.

Here are the detailed steps that help me resolved my issues.

To manually regenerate data:

Note: Back up the ADAM database before proceeding. For more information, see Performing an end-to-end backup and restore for View Manager (1008046).

Log in to the machine hosting your View Connection Server. If there is a cluster of View Connection Servers, this step can be done on any of the servers.
Click Start > Run, type cmd, and click OK. The command prompt opens.
Run this command, substituting a name for your back up file.

vdmexport > ViewBackupFilename.ldf
Connect to the ADAM database. For more information, see Connecting to the View ADAM Database (2012377).
Expand OU=Properties > OU=VirtualCenter.
Note the entry is is after expanding the OU=VirtualCenter.
Document the first four characters of the vCenter Server entry, for example CN=f030. Right-click the vCenter Server entry and click Properties.
Document these three values:
- pae-NameValuePair. Note the entry here and then remove it.
- pae-SVIURL. Note the entry and set to a value similar to https://OFFvComposer.domain.com:18443
- pae-VCURL. Note the entry and set to a value similar to https://OFFvCenter.domain.com:443/sdk
In the View Administrator portal, refresh the dashboard to confirm the name change you made.
Do note that changes are reflected at two different location.
In View Configuration > Servers > vCenter Server, add an entry for the proper

Manually copy these values from the new vCenter Server entry to the old vCenter Server entry:

Note: Take a note of the entries before copying. When copying these values, copy and paste directly between properties sheets or copy to a plain text editor that does not add any formatting such as Windows Notepad.exe.

- pae-SVIUserPassword

Remove the new vCenter Server entry from the View Administrator webpage.
Undo the three changes you made at the beginning of the process, including adding the UNIQUEID=XX value back into pae-NameValuePair and rename the pae-SVIURL and pae-VCURL.
Reboot all Connection Servers in the replicated group.
In the View Administrator webpage, refresh the Dashboard page again and confirm vCenter Server and Composer are both shown correctly and are now showing as green status.
Proceed with testing provisioning and recomposing, as well as login functionality.

Ultrathin alternative to silicon for future electronics

Theres good news in the search for the next generation of semiconductors. Researchers with the U.S. Department of Energys Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of California Berkeley, have successfully integrated ultra-thin layers of the semiconductor indium arsenide onto a silicon substrate to create a nanoscale transistor with excellent electronic properties. A member of the III�V family of semiconductors, indium arsenide offers several advantages as an alternative to silicon including superior electron mobility and velocity, which makes it an oustanding candidate for future low-power, high-speed electronic devices.

Ubuntu Studio Theme a cool looking theme for your Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 7 10

Continuing my previous article about giving your Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 new look , I came across another impressive theme this was Ubuntu Studio theme . Now I have used Ubuntu Studio previously and was quite impressed by its default theme but well it never occurred to me that we could install that theme on plain vanilla Ubuntu 7.10 , then I came across piece of instruction on installing it and well decided to reproduce the instructions in more simplified way on my blog .

So here are complete instructions on giving your Ubuntu 7.10 cool looks with Ubuntu Studio Theme .

Open up terminal window from (Application -> Accessories -> Terminal )

Firstly we install Ubuntu Studio theme for GTK and Metacity , by issuing the following command in the terminal window :

sudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-theme

Now we install Ubuntu Studio GDM theme with the following command issued in the terminal window :

sudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-gdm-theme

Now we install Ubuntu Studio Icon theme with the following command :

sudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-icon-theme

and finally we install couple of really cool Ubuntu Studio wallpapers with the following command in the terminal window :

sudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-wallpapers

After completing the above steps , you need to apply the newly installed theme to do so go to ( System -> Preferences -> Appearance ) and Select ubuntustudio in the dialog box displayed :

Now we need to change wall papers too , you can do so by selecting the Background tab of the above Appearance dialog box . Now you will see the new wall paper that have been installed select the one that charms you most though i like this one which i have highlighted in the screen shot below .

Finally after completing all the above steps , the Ubuntu studio theme should be properly installed . This is how my desktop looks after installing the ubuntu studio theme :

TurboTax TXF specification for stock trades

For those who are looking information on the TurboTax TXF tax exchange format, scroll down...

For years, I have downloaded my stock trade information from my trading institution, manipulated it into pairs of buys and sells, and transferred that information into TurboTax. Initially, I had copy-pasted the information into the TurboTax fields. That took hours. In later years, I developed Perl and AutoIT programs that automated the data entry. (It was satisfying to sit back and watch the cursor jump from field to field and click button after button, as if I were operating the mouse and keyboard. But then, this year, changes in TurboTax prevent my AutoIT program from finding the entry fields. Ugh. Would I have to enter the data manually again? Please, no. And I do not want to pay for and manually enter stock information into Quicken.

TurboTax had an option for importing stock information. I only had to have a file in TXF format (Tax Exchange Format or Tax Export Format). Surely, TurboTax/Intuit would have some description of that file format somewhere? Nope.

I found this description on a Russian site: http://www.softhelp.ru/fileformat/txf/txf.htm . Well, that page was difficult to read, so I connected online with a TurboTax/Intuit help agent and asked where I could learn about the TXF specification. After 45 minutes, the Intuit agent reported that she and her supervisor could not find any information. Wow. I gave them the link to the web page Id found and thanked them for their time.

I gave the web page another look and started putting the pieces together. That page describes far more finance-related details than I needed; I just wanted to know about stocks. And it turns out that the format for stocks is straightforward.

With a little bit of programming, I manipulated my stock info into this new form, and TurboTax readily imported it.

Here is the basic form of a TXF file for stock trades.

Lines of a TXF start with single letters or with ^ or $. Start your txf file (e.g. myStocks.txf) with lines that identify the version (V) of TXF spec (036), a name (A) for your solution, the date (D) of the "export" of information to the file, and the record-ending symbol "^":

For each stock buy/sell, provide these four lines (the N321 informs TurboTax that its a short term trade; use N323 for long term trades):

Follow those lines with the trade description (P), the sell and buy dates (D, D), the sell and buy amounts ($, $), and the record-ending symbol "^":

I recommend that you create two dummy records and try importing your txf file into TurboTax to confirm that it works. In my experimenting, I discovered that the buy and sell rows were backwards from what I thought the spec said.
