Ubuntu caught in the wild this time in a NASA video!

Ubuntu caught in the wild this time in a NASA video!

Ubuntu in NASA video

Ubuntu is popping up everywhere. Googles Project Tango video and driverless car project were recent examples. Then there was this news about French Armed Forces adoption of Ubuntu en masse. Everything points to a brighter future for Ubuntu OS. It almost seems like Ubuntu and Linux are slowly becoming the de facto choice for enterprise users.

Ubuntu spotted in a NASA video!

Its just a 2 mintues long video. But if youre impatient, skip to 1:25. Thanks to our reader Evan for tipping us. If you have an interesting bit of information to share with us, feel free to use our contact page. Thanks for reading, see more Linux news here.

Ubuntu for Android could be available this year but only for manufacturers

Ubuntu for Android could be available this year but only for manufacturers

Canonical developers earlier this year showed a surprising idea: turn a latest generation smartphone in our PC desktop using Ubuntu for Android software, which allows to enjoy both Android and Ubuntu as we need them.

At the Computex trade show being held in Taipei one of the heads of Canonical, John Barnard, said the development of this solution was ongoing, although neither he nor Mark Shuttleworth confirmed a specific date, saying that Ubuntu for Android could come "possibly" before the end of the year.

Of course, as already mentioned in the initial announcement of this development, Canonical has no intention of "liberating" Ubuntu for Android so you can use any interested: those manufacturers will have the option of preinstalarlo on their smartphones, so that at least in the first instance who wants to exploit the potential of this interesting concept will have to buy one of the terminals to come with that feature.

I do not think that means a lot: in forums such as the famous XDA Developers often achieve what seemed complicated, so maybe with a little luck that wants to impose that limitation Canonical look overwhelmed by the interest of the user community and that ability of some cibergurs Android community.

Trying out this blogging thing again

Trying out this blogging thing again

This is, i think, the third time I have tried to setup a blog.  I hope to be talking about a number of things on this site.

Here are the topics that interest me:

  • MythTV
  • Application Development
  • Podcasting
  • Linux
  • Cooking
MythTV
I am the co-host of the MythTV Cast podcast.  You can find us over at http://mythtvcast.com.  The podcast is a small, niche, podcast centered around MythTV.  We arent associated with MythTV in any way, but we wanted put together a show where we could highlight news and developments with the project, as well as interview key people associated in or around the project.  Check us.

Application Development
I am an application developer specializing mostly Java Enterprise applications. I mostly develop with the Spring Framework.  I tend to focus more on web-based applications and have been focusing on HTHML5 and CSS3.  This has also lead me more into into integrating the web and mobile applications, specifically on the Android platform.

The first app I published in the Android Market is OpenSchedule for Android. It is a very specific app for attending conferences.  I am currently working on version 2 of the application.

Podcasting
As I mentioned above, I am the co-host of the MythTV Cast podcast.  I am also a regular co-host on the Linux Link Tech Show. We meet live every Wednesday night at 8:30 pm EST and we talk about Linux and all types of technology.

I live in podcasts every day.  They run all day long on my Android phone as  I am doing my work.  I will be posting links to my regular podcasts in a future posting.

Linux
I live in Linux every day.  I run Ubuntu Linux on my work laptop as well as my MythTV boxes at home.  I hope to address some news and topics as they come up as well as issues that I run into (although, this seems far less than a few years ago).  If you are interested in how I got into linux, check my bio on the tllts.org web site.

Cooking
I know this is completely unrelated to all the other technology based topics I have mentioned, but it is, quite possibly, my favorite thing to do.  I will try almost any food as well as try to make almost any dish.  My wife and I have gone to numerous cooking classes and we are always trying new things.

This is a little about what I intend to put here.  I am going to try to post some stuff here on a somewhat consistent basis, but, if past experience tells me anything, dont expect too much :)  For some reason, I have been getting the itch to write some things down lately, and I hope this will be that place for me to do that.

I will post these out to my various social networks when I do post.  Speaking of which, you can find me on Google+, Facebook, Twitter and Identi.ca.  I am dmfrey everywhere.

Coding Motion: Synchronizing Quadcopters aka "Swarm"

Seems like Ubuntu is becoming pretty popular among corporates, business houses and scientific communities. Recent spotting of Ubuntu in Mercs driverless research car video and Googles driverless cars are perfect examples.

TSM I Betcha Didnt Use TradeSkillMaster for This!

TSM I Betcha Didnt Use TradeSkillMaster for This!

Hey folks!

Not everyone uses TradeSkillMaster, but if you are or even consider yourself a Goblin, an AHer, or....heh, heh, are a gold blogger that doesnt use TSM to sell your goods, you are waaaaaay behind the times. Download it from Curse, donate to Sapu and co. and set it up already!

Now to my point of this post. Since most of my readers are using TSM for something, whether its for your Gemmies, Chants, Gear Crafting, or Scribbling, I am probably guessing you had no idea what else to use it for.....Vendoring Flips (but I am also guessing that the cocky fuckers are gonna say "I have been doing that for a long time".....but I call bullshit on that one).

Do you buy and re-sell vendor goods? I am talking anything from Obsidium Hatchlings to Transmute: Primal Might. From Recipe: Redridge Goulash to Pattern: Comfortable Insoles. Whatever niche you hit, theres a quick way to post these...

Familiar with TSM? Easy to setup. The pics are from my Scribe....So bear with me a second:

Step 1: Go into your category (in this case, 4.2 glyphs in the pic below). Control click your "vendor goods" (in this case, my fermulahs) and go to the little Add button. *poof* They magically appear on the right side...Amazing, huh? No? Okay. Its still cool.

Step 2: POST!

*You can see its auto undercut to your settings in your group (or just make a new group, but I am showing you the easiest way, remember?)

Step 3: UHHHHH?!?!!?!

*Yes, my "fallback" when no glyphs are in the AH is 322g 55s. And yes, they do sell at that price....

Now if you do the quick and easy route, the vendor recipies/formulas, pets/etc, that you are selling will have an autofallback to your settings for the rest of the group.

I would recommend setting up a new group for your main "vendor" toon with all your route items. You might want to set up a specific group for the more "rare" formulas, one for pets, one for "generics" like good ol fishing poles, whatever your liking. However if you are just doing a few, and not a hundred, just follow the steps above for a quick cancel/repost, scans, ect. Did I mention I love TSM?!

If you are new to the vendor flipping market, there are a few addons you might like. I have used Recipe Profit for Gathermate for some time, but its broke since 4.3. A little searching showed "Recipe Radar", which claims to be updated for 4.3, so a test might be in order on that one. If you hate addons, here are a few posts dedicated to vendor runs that are on my favorites:

Kathros Thunder Bluff
Sinshrouds Outland Supply

Please, please be careful when doing this. You want to make sure to check all your settings before you go posting something for 5g when you should be getting 500 if no auctions are up. Feel me? Whats the saying, measure twice, cut once? Yeah. Do that here.

Hope you learned something today kiddos. Now leave an apple at my desk when the bell rings. No homework for tomorrow, but you have a test next week.

Now that I am thinking about it, Sapu, I wonder how hard it might be to rock out a  VendorMaster Addon? Its a stretch, but would be interesting nonetheless.

Treat yourself to DB2 this holiday season

Treat yourself to DB2 this holiday season

Earlier this year, Oracle acquired MySQL. They have since significantly hiked up prices across the entire MySQL line. Today, it costs more to get a years subscription to MySQL than to simply get IBM DB2 Express Fixed Term License (FTL).

What surprises me is how much more value you get by going with IBM. DB2 is 60% cheaper than a comparable MySQL edition. You can set up a cluster of two DB2 servers for the price of one MySQL server and have change left over.

Keep in mind that MySQL Enterprise limits you to four processors, which is comparable to the DB2 Express limit of four cores across two processors.

DB2 Express FTL, which is built on exactly the same code as all IBM DB2 editions, comes with official IBM 24x7 Support, High Availability Disaster Recovery clustering, SQL replication, backup compression, Optim Development Studio, Optim Database Administrator, DB2 fixpacks, and access to older DB2 releases through IBM Passport Advantage.

Trials Fusion This is a horrible thing to do to yourself

Trials Fusion This is a horrible thing to do to yourself

I tend to be a bit of a crabass when it comes to digital distribution of my video games. With things likes DRM controversies being more prevalent (still mad at you Capcom/EA), I tend to be a big proponent of having a physical copy of my games. No so much that I trade or cell my games, but that when I pay for something, I want to have a physical product that I can claim as MINE. Because of this I dont tend to purchase much stuff from PSN or XBLA respectively.

Steam has grossly weakened my defenses to this philosophy with their crazy sales, but since I was so adamant about it, I missed out on a lot of good arcade games. One such series was the Trials series by RedLynx games. Now as a fan of RoosterTeeth, Ive seen plenty of videos on the game, and it just looked frustrating. Funny videos though, and that is pretty much all it took for me to be willing to try it. The demo of Trials HD was fun enough but it was never enough to move me to buy the game. However, I do have this shiny new PS4 and have been looking for stuff to play on it, so why not give the new one a shot?

TRIALS FUSION

Is there a long running narrative with the Trials series? I know there has been over ten installments of the game but from where I stand there doesnt appear to be an overarching story. Am I playing young motocross upstart Tad Tadderson? Out to prove that hes the most talented rider by riding over mountains of garbage or things that can explode and kill him all the while jumping his bike off cliffs? Fuckd if I know and frankly I dont think you are supposed to care.

Although, perhaps that isnt totally true. As you play through the game your rider is given a tutorial from an automatic voice called "Cindy" she is upbeat sounding and perky and she basically gives you the instructions for how to play the game. And at first I kinda just shrugged it off in a "yeah yeah, just get to the fucking game" kinda fashion.

Many of the jumps will result in major airtime

But as I played along the game and completed more courses, I realized her tone of voice would change, shed get a little more personable, friendly, like she was becoming emotionally attached to the rider. As the levels get more difficult and more chaotic, she starts to show empathy and concern for you. Even further still, she seems to be struggling with some form of internal guilt, as if she wants to share some big secret with you. There is also a secondary automated voice that she will go back and forth with in regards to the rider.

I dont want to go into what exactly she had to say because they did a pretty good job with it, and I dont want to play spoiler. But I will say that it was an interesting way to weave a story into a game that basically had none, and made it much more interesting to listen in when she had something to say. I would akin it to how Portal weaved a story in with its tutorial, only without the psychotic charm of GLA-DOS.

Set in the future, the maps are set over varied terrain types.

Trials Fusion is one of those fucking infuriating titles that seems deceptively simple all the while managing to be incredibly difficult. I sort of had a feeling this might be the case going in but it certainly didnt stop me. The controls of this game are functionally simple. You have a gas, you have a brake, you can lean forward, you can lean backward. If your jump is high enough, you can do tricks. Essentially that is all of the function that you get in the game. Its all predicated on the physics of the lean of your character and the amount of gas or break you hit.

I have heard it described as a knock off version of Excitebike and I have to mostly disagree with that statement. I say mostly because playing the game in its single player mode is a grossly different experience to Excitebike and when compared to playing it in multiplayer.

When playing single player you are started off on a tier of difficulty starting from beginner and working its way up to extreme. You are started at the beginning of the track and all you need to do is push forward until the game says you hit the finish. It clocks your time and gives a medal ranked on how fast you were. Sounds easy enough, right? Well, at first it is. Usually you get long straights to pick up the pace and series of jumps where you want to make sure you have your wheels below you when you hit the ground. Hell, ya might even do a front flip for style.

The ATV is a heavy ride, but the most stable. Ive usually got the fastest times
from this option when it was available.

Dont expect this to be the norm though. Because as you play the track starts to add jumps that you need to time your distance correctly, land on hovering platforms, go up incredible steep walls, get over barrels and mines that blow up, make jumps without ramps, and so forth. Considering the lack of controls and the fact that there is no jump button, the difficultly increases substantially.

You arent totally left to the wolves though because periodically through out there map there are checkpoints. So if you bail off your bike ore miss a jump, you can easily tap a button and you will be back to the last checkpoint you cleared. The timer continues as you go and you will have lost all your momentum so getting yourself back on track can sometimes be hard, and to make matters worse the game also keeps a running count of how many times you hit that button so when you finish the track, on top of the time it took you to complete it you will also be marred by the number of faults it took you. Its a humbling experience. You could always restart the track from the beginning, but that doesnt make things any easier.

The difficulty of the platform ramps up like crazy in the later stages.

Another subtle little insult the game likes to throw at you is when you start up a track that some friends have already played, you will have a little helmet icon with their name on the track with you when you play, so you can see just how fast they cleared it, roughly the path they took and where they got stuck. However, this only shows the friend who completed it the fastest. This is infuriating because you might be stuck in a certain spot trying to figure out how to clear a jump, and youll just watch your friends ghost whiz by you and make you look idiotic. Eff you Redlynx, I can see how badly I am doing on my own.

There are also skill missions now where you have to try to get the highest trick total you can on a course which gives the game kind of a 2D SSX Tricky kinda feel to it if that makes any sense. Or there are challenge ones where you have weird restrictions like how far you can go without leaning on your bike. They add some ripples to gameplay and you usually get one or two of them per level of difficulty.

The multiplayer experience I would say is more like the traditional Excitebike in the regards that you have four riders on 4 tracks. You cant shift up and down between tracks so you cant make the riders behind you tumble. Everyone has the exact same track to do and its a race to the finish on shorter and somewhat simpler courses. You wont get the crazy impossible jumps or precision platforming to do as it is a race after all.  If you bail or crash you are brought back at the next checkpoint so you are always still in the race. It was lets plays of this mode that made me want to actually play the game. But what I found bizarre is that there is only local multiplayer of this mode. I sort of appreciate that in this day and age because playing a game like this with your friends in the room is certainly more fun, but come on now Redlynx. I dont have that many friends.

Now I would say the length of this game is directly proportional to a couple of things. Primarily how competitive you are, or how perfectionist you are. If you have either of these two traits you might be in for the long haul. As I mentioned, when you play a level and win, you are awarded a medal and for a while I was doing a pretty good job of getting golds. But after you complete all the levels and see the "end" of the game, it then unlocks platinum medals for faster times. Well fuck, back to the start I go looking for that perfect run on each track. (Spoiler: Its not happening)

In addition to this, on top of seeing your fastest friends ghost on your track (if they have the #1 time on your friend list) the game also will notify you of how many of your friends did better than you on a track. At time of writing I have only one other PS4 friend who has the game, and he knows who he is, but every time I log back into the game I can see that his dumb ass smashed more of my times. Which means that I have to go back and try to outdo him. The tracks are only like 2 minutes long, but I might be looking to give up 90 minutes trying to best him.

But the other big point is the track creator. Users can go online and create tracks for other users to play and rate. They are sorted out according to difficulty and some of them will be featured by Ubisoft and Redlynx. This is not a feature I would use all that often. I tried to dabble with the creator and it just came off as way too complicated for me. However, at time of writing there has already been ten thousand tracks created on the PS4 and its possible they are making tracks cross playable between consoles.

Because of this, I can very easily log into the game and find some new tracks to play, giving the game fairly limitless potential to continue to provide me content. And that is not something that I see all that often with the game.

There only real technical problem I have with the game comes into the fact that I think is only a problem because its a downloaded title. It might be the console itself, it might be my shoddy internet connection but occasionally I get a little bit of some slower and choppy menus. Its not always prevalent, and thankfully its not an issue when I am actually on the play track. I can reload the level or the checkpoint instantaneously and that is something I greatly appreciate. Especially in a game like this one where you will be starting over often.

I didnt really pay attention to the link so I bought the full version with the season pass, so it seems some DLC in my future, but aside from more tracks I am not sure how they will change the game all that much. In retrospect I probably could live without the DLC but I dont feel like I overpaid for the game. I clearly got 40$ worth of entertainment for it.  A good way to keep that in perspective is remembering that as a child I paid 50$ for Wrath of the Black Manta when I got my first NES... And that game was shit.

So Im torn. I like this game, but fuck this game. Its a simple mechanic that is fun to play and challenging. But there is nothing more infuriating than seeing a friends time fly past me, or having to hit reset on the level and see that big stinking 390 attempts and climbing in the upper corner insulting me the whole time. Its one of those games that I know with certainty that I will NEVER complete no matter how much I play it. So its replay value is incredible. Is a deep game? Ehhh, probably not. I probably could have gotten one of the old ones and had the same effect.

It was fun to play, and has some addictive qualities for the completionist, but its not really going to set the world on fire. It did what it needed to for me, provided a buffer between my next major game.  4 out of 5.

Two Fighters out this week Super Smash Bros 3DS and Persona 4 Arena Ultimax

Two Fighters out this week Super Smash Bros 3DS and Persona 4 Arena Ultimax

If youre a fan of fighting games, then this week is going to be a busy one! Of course it depends on what you like, but if you follow just about everything--then youll be happy to hear there are two major releases coming up; one of which will be here as early as tomorrow. So, just what are these two games? Well....

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax-

The first game (coming out tomorrow) is Persona 4 Arena Ultimax. This one is a must have, not only for fighting fans, but for Persona fans as well. The game itself is a sequel to Persona 4 Arena, and it features a full visual novel styled story mode taking place after the events of the original game (and before the Golden ending in Persona 4 Golden). On top of that, the game features brand new gameplay modes, new characters, shadow versions of the characters (both new and old) with different move sets, massive online lobbies (PS3 version only), and other general gameplay updates you might expect from a fighter.

While the game is a part of the Persona series and aimed at fans in general, it is still a solid fighter just about anyone can enjoy. Even if you arent a Persona fan, but enjoy fighters by Arc System Works (Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, etc), then it may be worth checking out.

Super Smash Bros 3DS -

This is the big one. After a long (LONG) wait, Super Smash Bros for the 3DS finally hits western shores. Since the release of the original back on the N64, the Smash Bros series has been one of the most well known games among gamers, and a must have for Nintendo fans. Featuring a wide range of characters from a wide verity of game series, Smash Bros is a game both casual and competitive players can enjoy, and now the full experience can be found on a handheld for the very first time. Of course a full HD release will be coming to the Wii U later this year, but for now those itching to play on the big screen will just have to settle for the 3DS.

While at their heart both versions of Smash Bros are the same game, the 3DS version and Wii U version do have their own gameplay modes and stages to play on, so you do get a bit of a different experience depending on your console of choice. (Which gives you a reason to pick up both versions if you can.)

So, if youre into fighting games, or love crossovers--get ready to play some great games this week! Rather it be Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, or Smash Bros 3DS (or both), dont forget to mark the date on your calender because the wait is almost over.
