Ubuntu 11 10 Oneiric Ocelot Beta 1 is Released!
Ubuntu 11 10 Oneiric Ocelot Beta 1 is Released!
Not just Ubuntu Linux but almost all the GNU/Linux distributions (with few exceptions of course) make sure to release a new version of within like 6 month-cycle. And within these usual 6 months each distro has a slightly different beta release versions of their own ... but for Ubuntu Linux it usually start with "Alpha1" to "Alpha 3" and then two Beta versions (1 and 2)... then arrives the official release.
Whats new?
So, since Ubuntu has already released the Alpha3 few weeks ago, few hours ago the developers made the official announcement of the Ubuntu Beta 1!. As usual the Beta 1 comes with updated package versions + one major difference.
Starting with Beta 1, Ubuntu is letting the users download a DVD image thats about 1.5GB of size! which in comparison with the standard 4+GB ISO image.
According to the developers, this DVD image is actually the expansion of the ever growing, standard CD image thus this new DVD includes additional packages such as Inkscape, GIMP, additional language packages and more LibreOffice related files (clip-arts, templates, extension, etc) as well.
Other new features include...
*. Gnome 3.1.5 (which is on its way to the Gnome 3.2 thats going to be included in the official launch of the 11.10).
*. LightDM is the default display manager.
*. DajaDup comes pre-installed as the data backup manager.
*. New updates to the Ubuntu Application indicators system (including new power manager and a session indicator).
*. Top rated section added to the Ubuntu Software Manager + "major" speed improvements over .deb file installation according to the developers.
*. Major Core infrastructure feature: Now users of the 64-bit version of the Ubuntu Linux OS can install 32-bit packages without the need to use the separate "ia32-libs".
*. Kernel update to the version 3.0.0-9.15 which brings bug fixes and improvements.
As usual the Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu, etc distributions have also released Beta 1 versions of their own which brings latest KDE 4.7 Plasma desktop and related package updates, Amarok 2.4.3, Muon software center, pastebinit support in Xubuntu are just a few to mention.
You can try out the latest version of Ubuntu Beta 1 from this download section of the release page. Good luck.

Ubuntu 16 04 Beta 1 Is Now Available to Download
Ubuntu 16 04 Beta 1 Is Now Available to Download
The first Ubuntu 16.04 beta builds are now available to download.
Lubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME, Ubuntu MATE oooh-argh and Ubuntu Kylin are among the official Ubuntu flavors to stick their hands up for inclusion in this development milestone.
The regular version of Ubuntu, i.e. the one most of you are waiting for, only takes part in the second beta release.
Ubuntu 16.04 Beta 2 is set for a March 24 release date.
For this bout of beta level testing the following Ubuntu flavors take part:
- Lubuntu
- Xubuntu
- Ubuntu MATE
- Ubuntu GNOME
- Ubuntu Kylin
Whats New in Ubuntu 16.04 Beta 1?
Ubuntu Kylin 16.04 Beta 1 improves on its alpha releases with a new version of the Youker assistant, a brand-new login screen (kylin-greeter, pictured) and benefits from general improvements to both the look and feel of the Kylin branding and theme.
Testers of the lightweight spin will find new versions of key apps and components, including new versions of the Xfce 4 desktop, whisker menu applet and Orage calendar, plus support for controlling the Parole media player from the sound applet.
In line with Ubuntu, GNOME Calendar and GNOME Logs are now pre-installed, GNOME Builder is available through the main archive and an experimental Wayland session is available to install (but keep it mind it requires open-source GPU drivers).
As always, Lubuntu ships with no new features. It does offer a selection of small bug fixes and benefits from being based on the Linux kernel (v4.4, fact fans).
Last (but never least) is Ubuntu MATE 16.04 Beta 1.
The retro revivalist once against delivers an impressive changelog for its latest development snapshot.
On offer is a brand new Software Boutique (accessed through an updated version of Ubuntu MATE Welcome tool). The MATE desktop has been bumped to v1.12.1 and includes Caja 1.12.4.
Fans (both literal and figuratively) will be pleased to hear that the updated desktop sees reduced CPU usage across the board.
Also included is a Unity-style MATE panel layout is available to try. Head to MATEs appearance settings and select the Mutiny panel layout to take it for a spin.

Ubuntu 14 10 Utopic Unicorn is here Linux fans download now!
- By Brian Fagioli

Not only is Ubuntu one of the most user-friendly Linux distributions, but it also gets many timely releases. Say what you want about it, but the overall experience is second to none. I would not hesitate to recommend Ubuntu to both Linux beginners and experts alike.
After we just learned the name of the future version of the OS (15.04) to be Vivid Vervet (it is coming in 2015), Canonical releases Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn today. Linux fans can download it now!
Canonical explains, "the Ubuntu 14.10 release delivers a v3.16 based kernel. This brings a significant number of bug fixes and new hardware support including expanded architecture support for Power 8 and arm64 platforms. It also includes support for Intel Cherryview, Haswell, Broadwell and Merrifield systems, and initial support for Nvidia GK20A and GK110B GPUs. There is improved graphics performance on many Nvidia, Intel and ATI Radeon devices and also audio improvements with support for the Radeon .264 video encoder. Expanded platform support is enabled via support for 64 bit EFI boot on 32 bit EFI BIOS. This release also brings performance improvements in suspend/resume times".
Canonical touts the following additional changes:

Ubuntu One for Windows Cloud App Client is Released!
Ubuntu One for Windows Cloud App Client is Released!
"Ubuntu One" is the brand name for the cloud computing (storage specific) model of the Ubuntu Linux operating system. Although the Ubuntu Cloud model is an open one unlike with other models such as iClould or MS Windows Cloud version which are proprietary in nature.
I dont know much about the business oriented cloud... but Im against the idea of the personal cloud "module", because something doesnt feel right man :). Anyhow, whether its necessary or not, it doesnt matter because its at our doorsteps. And if you use Ubuntu as your primary OS then youre aware that it comes highly integrated with the Ubuntu One account which easily lets you manage your data in the Ubuntu Cloud.
![]() |
Its here! ... |
As a result of this, Ubuntu One has already released its desktop front-end to other platforms such as Android and iPhone recently but the MS Windows version was still in beta. But today, Ubuntu One team announced that the Ubuntu One for MS Windows is officially available to download!.

So if you dont like to pay for anything, then Ubuntu One will give you about 5GB of Cloud space for free! (a free sign-up is necessary first). And as long as youre using any device thats powered by a the MS Windows platform and have this app installed, youll be able sync/access your data with ease.

You can create new folders, manage music, delete files, upload/download files, etc using this utility. Its about 22.3MB in size and if interested, you can get it from this official Ubuntu One for Windows page.

Trump s Russia Denials Are Falling Apart As Steve Bannon Is Removed From The NSC
Trump s Russia Denials Are Falling Apart As Steve Bannon Is Removed From The NSC
Breaking News: Steve Bannon Removed from National Security Council
Trumps Russia denials just fell apart as after months of denying that they knew Mike Flynn had Russia connections, White House officials admitted that they knew Flynn had problems which is why Steve Bannon was on the NSC.
Rosie Gray of The Atlantic tweeted:
sr WH official tells me Bannon was only on NSC to keep an eye on Flynn & "de-operationalize NSC from Rice" & that he never went to a meeting
Rosie Gray (@RosieGray) April 5, 2017
Same official says the president made the decision, this was the deal from the beginning, and "we all knew Flynn had issues"
Rosie Gray (@RosieGray) April 5, 2017
The White House claimed that Flynn was let go because he lied to Vice President Pence, but it turns out that this wasnt true. Bannon was named to the National Security Council on January 29, so the Trump administration knew about Flynn, and they were worried enough to send Steve Bannon in to keep an eye on him.
The Trump administrations Russia denial continue to be contradicted by facts. What is clear is that the White House is going to try to change the subject from their potential collusion with Russia during the presidential campaign to Susan Rice. If the Susan Rice distraction doesnt stick, they are going to throw Mike Flynn under the bus.
Trump hasnt been telling the truth about Russia, and the removal of Steve Bannon is another crack in the administrations wall of denial.

Trawler stuck on Clifton beach when is the next Spring tide
Trawler stuck on Clifton beach when is the next Spring tide
So, following on from the tweets this morning after listening to Cape Talk 567, the Eihatsu Maru is still beached on Clifton 1st beach :(
So, when exactly is Spring tide and what is it?:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tide
Range variation: springs and neaps
The semi-diurnal range (the difference in height between high and low waters over about half a day) varies in a two-week cycle.
Approximately twice a month, around new moon and full moon when the Sun, Moon and Earth form a line (a condition known as syzygy) the tidal force due to the sun reinforces that due to the Moon.
The tides range is then at its maximum: this is called the spring tide, or just springs.
It is not named after the season but, like that word, derives from the meaning "jump, burst forth, rise", as in a natural spring.
So, when is the next Spring tide?
From the table below: at 02h45 in the morning of 20th May it will be 1,58m (compared to the 1,28m yesterday at 12h04 Tues 15th May) thats an extra 30cm.
http://www.koolasun.co.za/weather/tide-tables/cape-town-tides.html
See here for the latest photos of the stranded (beached) Eihatsu Maru on Clifton 1st beach via Google images and here for the latest videos.
See forum here for nice pics (incl. pics of cable snapping again): http://www.flyafrica.info/forums/showthread.php?48730-Trawler-Eihatsu-Maru-aground-1st-Beach-Clifton/page2
Update on Fri 18th May: the trawler is now free! They managed to get it off the sand at about 15h35 on Fri afternoon :)

Ubuntu 11 10 aireplay ng and the mon0 is on channel 1 error and how to fix it shell script included
I had recently upgrade my Ubuntu install to 11.10. Along with other annoyances I came across I ran into a bit of a deal breaker when I went to run aireplay-ng. I was getting the following error:
mon0 is on channel -1, but the AP uses channel [#]
This was going to be a huge problem since I know that my ZyDAS 1211 chip set was compatible with packet injection. After searching around for a bit I found a great solution from this site here about the drivers and how to patch and reinstall the older ones back in. Below I have a script that you can run to get that installed.

Ubuntu 11 10 Oneiric Ocelot is Just 2 Seconds away from Instant Boot!
Ubuntu 11 10 Oneiric Ocelot is Just 2 Seconds away from Instant Boot!
Yup, according to the tests done by crn.com experts, the recently released Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot Alpha 2, although, still in the earlier beta versions still its significantly faster than the current 11.04 Natty Narwhal!.
There are few ups and downs at the moment since its in alpha stage but in their own words...
"...judging by its early alpha version. It has the fastest boot-time weve seen on an HDD-based PC, shows snappy performance between applications..."
Although not entirely sure if the adaptation of the Kernel 3.0 RC+ has anything to do with it but it seems that the removal of GDM and replacing it with LightDM has done the trick. In any operating system, one of the early-loaded GUI services is the log-in manager, and since...
![]() |
LightDM... |
GDM has been criticized by many developers saying that it has about 50,000 pieces of codes while LightDM only has 5000, thats at least 10x lesser amount of software code thus it should have helped.
Anyhow in their test PC (Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 at 3.00 GHz and a usual hard disk, not a SSD drive, other hardware unknown) the Ubuntu 11.10 alpha was able to boot up (from the moment of switch on to log-in screen) within just 12 seconds!.

Thanks to Google Chrome type operating systems, there is now a "standard" that says any OS that has about 10 or lower seconds of boot up times is considered as an operating system with an instant boot, so in that sense, Ubuntu 11.10 is just 2 seconds behind and most importantly it has been able to achieve that not using a SSD drive (which is significantly faster) but by using a SATA HDD!.
Another key improvement is the Ubuntu Software Center since Ubuntu decided to remove Synaptic from the official CD/DVD (but still available through the official repositories), starting with the 11.10 version.
Its about time that they started to pay some serious attention to improving the USC, because from the beginning USC requires a lot of system resources (CPU actually, although RAM usage is not that high, pretty much closer to Synaptic according to my experience anyway) and the new improved USC in the 11.10 Alpha 2 seems to be quite responsive and fast than the one in the 11.04.
Anyhow its really interesting what this means at the end because as any developer knows, since Ubuntu has no interest in targeting the "hacker" and rely on the "actual PC users", which I think will help them immensely in the future because its this change of "attitude" (for good or bad) that has put them up there at the top.
If I remember correctly it was actually Ubuntu who was one of the first GNU/Linux (is it really?) distributions to speed up the boot up times where in the past GNU/Linux was painfully slower as well.
Anyhow, this should send some "alarms" across other distributions (or may be not) + we also have a little Gnome OS thingie going on at the moment, so it should be really interesting whether the other distributions have the ability to compete against this "Ubuntu trend".
Because a trend is a far more powerful tool which, if properly used can easily let you pass through the popular "players" easily, which can be seen a bit too much to dream about right now (oh I didnt made up that statement all by me own, saw something similar somewhere recently :D). But the rest assured, whether you love or hate Ubuntu, interesting times ahead, it seems.

Ubuntu 11 10 Oneiric Ocelot Beta 2 is Released!
Ubuntu 11 10 Oneiric Ocelot Beta 2 is Released!
Its been like 2 or 2.5 weeks since Canonical released the Ubuntu 11.10 beta 1 and few hours ago theyve released the last of the "testing versions", the 11.10 Beta 2!. This is the last of all "tests" and all that remains is the official release of the Oneiric Ocelot, scheduled at 13 October 2011 (man Im so excited!, I can criticize, etc... a lot to write about :P).
With this release theyve finally made it possible to fit it inside a standard CD (about 695MB for the 32-bit version) and more ARM architecture support has been added (via different disk images). Below are few of the new updates in the 11.10 Beta 2 version
*. Gnome 3 has been updated to the latest beta 3.1.9 which is on its way to the official Gnome Shell 3.2 released. A quick remainder for those of you whove been just woken up from your hibernation sleep ;-), remember, Gnome 3 is well supported in Ubuntu but it is not included in the default CD disk image. But you can install it via the online Ubuntu repositories nonetheless.
*. Includes the Kernel 3.0.4 version.
*. Comes with the Mozilla Firefox 7.0 beta 6.
*. And Thunderbird 7.0 beta 3.
*. Synaptic is removed (as most knows) but also the default video editor PiTiVi has also been removed.
*. LightDM with a new theme.
*. Banshee 2.2.0.
*. Shotwell 0.11.1.
These are the usual main apps to remind and as usual the Ubuntu Software Center is also updated with some bug fixes, etc as well. All the other official Ubuntu derivatives such as Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, etc have also released their Beta 2 version simultaneous to this release too.
As mentioned, from now, since the CD disk image fits into a 700MB CD, now you can download the beta 2 and use it as a LiveCD rather than the USB version with some of the previous "alpha and beta" versions.
If interested, you can get it from this official release page. Good luck.

Softpedia Editors Review for Ubuntu MATE Remix
A community-derived Ubuntu operating system that features the MATE desktop environment
Written by Marius NestorThe most beautiful MATE setup ever made!
Ubuntu MATE Remix is not just another Linux kernel-based operating system built around the MATE desktop environment, as it beautifully integrates this GNOME Classic fork, making it look very attractive, while at the same time being very lightweight. It uses a classic two-panel layout.
How to use it? Simple, use the Applications menu item to browser and open apps, the Places menu item to access the local filesystem or network shares and the System menu item to configure and tweak the OS. From the bottom panel you can easily interact with opened programs, as well as to cycle between the four virtual workspaces.
Includes a standard selection of applications
Default applications include the LibreOffice office suite, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Rhythmbox audio player, Totem video player, Transmission torrent downloader, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, Cheese webcam viewer, HexChat IRC client and Shotwell image viewer and organizer.
Freely downloadable as two Live DVDs for mainstream architectures
The distribution is available for download as two Live DVD ISO images of approximately 1GB in size each, designed to support both 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (amd64) hardware platfroms.
On Linux, you can write the ISO images to USB thumb drives of 1GB or higher capacity using a bootable USB disk creator like UNetbootin or GNOME Disk Utility (Disks). Optionally, if you dont have a spare USB stick, you can burn them to blank or RW DVD discs.
Boot options la Ubuntu Linux
It appears that the distribution uses Ubuntus default bootloader on the Live DVDs, which has been instructed to start the live system in about seven seconds from the moment the user boots the OS from the BIOS of a computer.
Default boot options include the ability to start the try Ubuntu MATE Remix without installing, start the installer directly, run a memory test, boot an existing operating sytem from the local drive or check the bootable medium for defects (only if using a DVD media).

Ubuntu One Music App for iPhone is Released!
Ubuntu One Music App for iPhone is Released!
I certainly dont like it at all but Cloud computing maybe the inevitable (maybe, Gayan?, seriously! :D). Although In a way I think that just like GNU/Linux has done, somewhat "protected" her users in the "real world", the only way for us geeks to survive (with our believe systems of course) in this virtual but real inevitability, maybe, just maybe perhaps by letting GNU/Linux and Open-source software in general taking control of the cloud-world.
Although not everyone trusts Ubuntu these days, but from a certain time, Canonical has been very serious about their Ubuntu One (which is their version of the open-source cloud model) product module and its behavior. Although they had a dedicated app for the Android "crowd" for sometime now but...
... since Apple is seemingly becoming powerful day by day, they too introduced their version of Cloud computing model called iCloud recently, its about time that Ubuntu One has finally decided to make an app that lets Apple "i-geeks" :) to interact with the Ubuntu One Music account.

Its free right?
Well, the application is free but after the initial 30 days of trial period, youll have to pay a monthly charge of $3.99. This is not a criticism since giving away 20GB storage for free doesnt make any sense, nor itll survive if it has no way to cover its expenses as anyone can see. And the Ubuntu One Music account lets you deal with MP3, Ogg Vorbis and non-DRM iTunes.

Although not everyone would like it but I think almost all of us GNU/Linux geeks just love the fact that Ubuntu respectively filter-out the DRM "license" which as said, its better to be in the cloud still retaining some of the original ideas that took us this far rather than live outside of it and be miserable (or maybe not :D).
Main features...
*. It only supports music streaming over Wi-Fi or 3G (of course).
*. MP3, Ogg Vorbis and non-DRM iTunes files are supported.
*. Supports iOS 3.1 or higher.
*. Automatic playback resume (if it was interrupted, say due to a call).
*. 30 days of "fun time", $3.99 afterwards (each month that is :D).
*. Shuffle and repeat ... are just a few to mention.
You can get the app from both this Ubuntu One Music page or from this Apple iTunes app store page. Good luck.

"Now to go into a little more detail about Uncanny Valley. Weve always loved open sandbox games with a lot of possibilities. Playing only one way can be a chore though, so we want to present choices not only in the story but also the gameplay.
To that end we decided to invest time into making the game feel more natural. Lets say youre locked in a room. You see a sturdy cart there, which you can push and break down the door with. Theres also a vent, so you can climb through it and youre free. Maybe you found an axe earlier and you can destroy the doors, meaning you dont have to find a key. This was our first concern making the game logical.
As much as we love Silent Hill games, we dont want to create key hunting fetch quests if you can simply destroy the door. For the most part there still needs to be some sort of logical progression through the game. Thats our advantage over 3D games we can make things like that happen more easily.
What you do also has an impact on the story. Lets go back to the previously mentioned situation where you break down the doors with a cart. When you do that, its going to be loud and that might attract hostile attention. If you go through a vent they might also hear you, or it could be a trap you dont want to be in a tight space with no escape when they find you.
So the gameplay creates dilemmas. When we back that with the consequence system, you will actually have to think things through before you do something youll regret. There will be only one save game file per playthrough, meaning you cant go back and change what happened to your character to achieve the best result.
As for the consequence system, we are keeping it balanced. There will never be a situation where you will be too damaged to escape or progress through the story you wont be put in a wheelchair for the rest of the game! Its a thin line between creating something that will be punishing and still fun, but through testing we will manage to find that perfect middle. And, as we offer a lot of options through playing, you will still be able to advance. Some consequences might affect the world, side characters, and how the story progresses, so its not always your personal health on the line."

Well... well holy shit. But this looks like the sort of thing that came out on PC last year so lets give it a quick Googly-moogly...

Oh, okay. Well... I dunno man, this still sounds pretty cool. Worth keepin an eye on.

Ubuntu Font Family Version 0 80 with Mono at last! is Released
Ubuntu font family is a completely free, open font sets that are release under the Ubuntu font license. Although its not that long ago they were released thus some of the standard sets such as the the "Mono" fonts were at the beta stage previously. But today the Ubuntu Font Page made it official that with the latest 0.80 version, now the "Mono" version is also included!.
If youre a webmaster then you can easily "install" these fonts thanks to the Google web-fonts API. These fonts are inspired by the Sans-Serif fonts and comes pre-optimized for desktops and mobile device screens especially according to Canonical.
Although personally, at smaller sizes I find it a bit difficult to read (could be a personal thing :D) and in general Im not quite fond of the overall "square-y" type physical attribute which again I find it a bit hard to read (in comparison with the beautiful Arial font for instance.

TV Reviews The End is Coming
TV Reviews The End is Coming
In case theres anyone following my blog for my TV reviews, Im going to be heavily scaling down my reviews from henceforth.
Ill be concentrating on just one TV programme at any one time so that I can start to dedicate my time to my other writing related passion of creative writing.
I cant do both writing and blogging, so TV reviews gets the chop Im afraid.
Ill continue to review Occupied and Star Wars: Rebels (which both finish their seasons soon) but The Walking Dead, Flash, Vikings and X-Files will not continue to get any reviews from now on, except perhaps, their finales.
Ill be doing Game of Thrones though when it starts up soon-ish.
Technology blogging will continue at more of less its same level .
