Trump s Russia Denials Are Falling Apart As Steve Bannon Is Removed From The NSC

Trump s Russia Denials Are Falling Apart As Steve Bannon Is Removed From The NSC

Breaking News: Steve Bannon Removed from National Security Council

Trumps Russia denials just fell apart as after months of denying that they knew Mike Flynn had Russia connections, White House officials admitted that they knew Flynn had problems which is why Steve Bannon was on the NSC.

Rosie Gray of The Atlantic tweeted:

sr WH official tells me Bannon was only on NSC to keep an eye on Flynn & "de-operationalize NSC from Rice" & that he never went to a meeting

Rosie Gray (@RosieGray) April 5, 2017

Same official says the president made the decision, this was the deal from the beginning, and "we all knew Flynn had issues"

Rosie Gray (@RosieGray) April 5, 2017

The White House claimed that Flynn was let go because he lied to Vice President Pence, but it turns out that this wasnt true. Bannon was named to the National Security Council on January 29, so the Trump administration knew about Flynn, and they were worried enough to send Steve Bannon in to keep an eye on him.

The Trump administrations Russia denial continue to be contradicted by facts. What is clear is that the White House is going to try to change the subject from their potential collusion with Russia during the presidential campaign to Susan Rice. If the Susan Rice distraction doesnt stick, they are going to throw Mike Flynn under the bus.

Trump hasnt been telling the truth about Russia, and the removal of Steve Bannon is another crack in the administrations wall of denial.

Ubuntu 16 10 Available For Download See What s New

Ubuntu 16 10 Available For Download See What s New

Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak

Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) has been released. The new version ships with Unity bug fixes, updated applications, including the GNOME 3.20 stack, an alternative experimental Unity 8 session, along with various under-the-hood improvements.

Unity / Compiz changes in Ubuntu 16.10

Unity and Compiz changes in Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak):
  • low graphics mode improvements:
    • reduced animations in the window switcher, launcher and menus (in some cases to zero);
    • disabled blur and fade in/out;
    • reduced shadows;
    • Also, even if youre not using the low graphics mode, theres now an option to to skip animation in the Expo, Scale, and Show Desktop Compiz plugins;
    • More about the improved low graphics mode in Unity 7, HERE.
  • bottom launcher:
    • properly decorate launcher/panel when the launcher is at the bottom;
    • Expo and Scale Compiz plugins now support buttom offsets, fixing some issues that were occuring when the Unity launcher is used at the bottom of the screen, such as the Workspace Switcher icon switching workspaces;
  • the top panel and launcher now have an outline in spread mode;
  • middle-clicking an app icon in the switcher now closes the app window
  • properly partially unmaximize a window when middle/left clicking in the restore button on the Unity panel;
  • scrolling on indicators should now work when Expo is active;
  • HiDPI fixes: the switcher detail view is now properly scaled and the xy_offset is now also scaled to make sure the switcher and launcher dont overlap;
  • re-added Animations Experimental, Animations Plus, Simple Animations, and Animations Addon Compiz plugins (these are available with the "compiz-plugins" package, not installed by default);
  • various other improvements and bug fixes.

Complete changelogs for Unity and Compiz.

Its important to mention that most of these changes were backported to Ubuntu 16.04 already.

Also, with Ubuntu 16.10, graphical desktop sessions (including Unity) are ran by systemd instead of Upstart (more about this, HERE). systemd was already used for system sessions in previous Ubuntu releases.

Another change in Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) is the addition of an Unity 8 session by default. The new Unity 8 session is optional, and Unity7 is still used by default. If you want to try the Unity 8 session in Ubuntu 16.10, select "Unity8" from the login screen:

Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak Unity 8

The Unity 8 session runs on top of the Mir display server, and is especially designed for Ubuntu Phones and Tablets. It is currently considered experimental on desktops and lacks many features to actually be usable for everyday use. For instance, besides requiring quite a bit of work pretty much everywhere, there are only a couple of apps installed by default (a web browser and terminal), applications (and scopes) can only be installed from the command line, and so on.

Furthermore, Unity 8 will only work if youre using Intel or Nvidia open source drivers. Also, VirtualBox is not supported, but there are reports that at least at some point in the past, it did work in VMWare.

Here are a couple of Unity 8 session screenshots I took under Ubuntu 16.10:

Update: for more about the Unity 8 session in Ubuntu 16.10, see THIS article (includes installing more scopes and apps, etc.).

Ubuntu 16.10 Defaults

Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) ships with GNOME 3.20 (and GTK 3.20), mixed with quite a few GNOME 3.22 applications.

Changes in GNOME 3.20 include:
  • a shortcuts window was added to some GNOME applications (apps that support this include Files, Videos, etc. );
  • Files (Nautilus) uses revamped search filters, a faster and more responsive search, a new, more compact preferences dialog, and more;
  • dconf Editor now uses a header bar, with a standard search design, redesigned entry editor, and other improvements;
  • GTK+ CSS theming has had a major overhaul, which should result in easier theme writing and more dynamic interfaces;

The Nautilus changes mentioned above only cover the 3.20 release. The previous Files (Nautilus) version in Ubuntu was 3.14 and since then, the app has seen many other changes.

Among these changes are a reworked places sidebar, a new popover for changing between views, zoom level and sort order, folder creation and file/folder renaming now uses popovers, the copy/move dialog is now integrated as a button in the Files header bar, and more.

U S Mission China Adjudicated More Than 1 Million Visas Visitors Add More Than 5 Billion to US Economy

U S Mission China Adjudicated More Than 1 Million Visas Visitors Add More Than 5 Billion to US Economy

Official portrait of United States Secretary o...         Image via WikipediaNew U.S. Ambassador to China, Gary Locke recently announced a 34% increase on adjudicated visas for Chinese applicants among our consular posts in China. Chinese visitors also reportedly added more than $5 billion to the U.S. economy during the previous fiscal year:
Ambassador Gary Locke announced that the U.S. Mission to China adjudicated more than one million U.S. visas for Chinese applicants during fiscal year 2011.  The U.S. Embassy in Beijing and Consulates in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenyang and Chengdu all contributed to this accomplishment, which represents a 34 percent increase over last year.

Ambassador Locke stressed the significance of this achievement, The U.S.-China relationship is profoundly important, and welcoming Chinese visitors to the United States strengthens our cultural and commercial ties.  I am very pleased at the success we have had in significantly reducing wait times for visa appointments this year.

According to the Department of Commerce, more than 801,000 Chinese visited the United States in 2010.  These visitors added more than $5 billion to the U.S. economy.

The U.S. Mission to China will continue to invite Chinese tourists, students, and businesspeople to visit the United States, a premier destination for travelers from around the world.  The Mission will continue to reduce visa interview wait times to the greatest extent possible by adding staff and eliminating inefficiencies wherever possible.

I have a feeling that this is going to be the start of the "counting beans" era at our overseas posts.  Consular posts overseas already are under pressure to keep the visa interview wait time, not that it makes a difference to Havana which now has 999 days wait time for visa interviews.  Posts may now be asked to calculate (or obtain the numbers elsewhere) on how much their visa applicants contribute to the U.S. economy.

So far, no one has posted readily available information on how much the U.S. Treasury is earning from visas and consular services collected at our posts overseas. I was told once that States Consular Bureau does not like advertising that.  Note that state.gov already post statistics of visa issuance but not visa applications.  In 2010, our consular posts worldwide issued 6,422,751 nonimmigrant visas. Even at a regular tourist visa fee of $140, thats $899.2 million in US dollars.  Some type of visas like the petition based categories and investors/intracompany transferee visas cost more. And since a lot more applicants are refused, that $899.2 million is probably only about a third of a whole bucket.

For some, even the money generated by the visa application fees would not be enough.  There have been calls on and off about reforming the visa system to make it more "traveler-friendly."  Expect to hear more about the visa system and how it could generate more American jobs. As two Seattle-based CEOs put it, "winning back our share of the global long-haul travel market to 2000-2001 levels would create 1.3 million new American jobs by 2020 and add $859 billion in economic output."

In the meantime, well be in the lookout for bean-counter pressers from our posts overseas. Too early to tell if this is a trend.

UConn women s basketball team has even former pro coaches impressed

UConn women s basketball team has even former pro coaches impressed

UConn Women"s Basketball vs Albany Highlights

STORRS >> For seven days earlier this month former WNBA coach Dan Hughes had a front-row seat for not only five postseason games played by the four-time defending national champion UConn womens basketball team, but also practices and shootarounds.

Hughes, who retired as the San Antonio Stars head coach and general manager after the 2016 season, was part of the broadcasting crew for both the American Athletic Conference tournament and the first two games in the NCAA tournament. His gig gave Hughes, who won 237 regular-season games in the WNBA, a chance to check out UConn coach Geno Auriemma and his staff preparing the Huskies for a run at an unprecedented fifth consecutive national title.

Hughes coached his WNBA teams to the playoffs 10 times in his 17 seasons, including San Antonios run to the championship series in 2008, so he has a different take on things than many of those who have been color commentators on UConn games over the years.

I think they do an incredible job of putting together the pieces from a teaching standpoint, hughes said. They do a great job of player development, they do a great job of conceptual team things and then they also teach the players to be adult-like in their maturity in the game. They kind of understand it is not just providing information, it is getting them to own the process. They do as good as a job as I see on those different things, so whatever they chose to do comes out in a very mature way.

Advertisement

Auriemma has often said his teams play its best when it is running offense instead of executing plays. Rather than slowing his players down by demanding that they run things a particular way, he asks them to read what the defense is giving them and act accordingly.

It is one thing to say, I want you to go here, and I want you to be here, and do this, Hughes said. They teach it in a way that the players know why they are going there more than some. It is not just you go here and do this, they kind of have to own the totality of why they are going there and they do that really well as teachers.

Hughes had been on the committee which selected the U.S. womens national teams when Auriemma was the national team coach. It gave Hughes a glimpse into the way Auriemma runs practices and also how he holds his players to a certain expectation level.

I kind of knew they did it, Hughes said. Where I got a good appreciation was being with USA Basketball for the last eight years, watching Geno doing it in short pieces with them. The other thing that is really great is Chris Dailey. I have dealt with her a lot over the years. I dealt with her a lot of the time when the kids are going from college into the pros, and she has been so reliable and understanding that process and the players have been so mature. When I got them they were so mature as teammates, they were mature in how to practice and I didnt have to do a lot, they came in ready.

Hughes coached Jen Rizzotti from 2001-03 when he was the head coach of the now defunct Cleveland Rockets. He came full circle when he was able to work with former UConn point guard Moriah Jefferson, who was selected by San Antonio with the second overall pick in the 2016 WNBA Draft.

Many years Jefferson would have been named the WNBA Rookie of the Year, but with her former UConn teammate Breanna Stewart on the scene, she had to settle for being a member of the All-Rookie team.

Hughes is rather certain that will not be the final honor bestowed on Jefferson in the WNBA.

I believe at some point she will be the best player at the point position in the WNBA, Hughes said, She reminded me of me coaching Becky Hammon, she reminded me of me coaching Jen Rizzotti, Dawn Staley, Suzie McConnell-Serio and yet she is 22 years old. It was so much fun for me to have somebody who looked at the game intelligently, was tough, but highly skilled. If you cant get energy from coaching Moriah Jefferson then you are dead. If you have any pulse going, she just makes you want to be there. She was fun.

Ubuntu 15 04 Available For Download See What s New

Ubuntu 15 04 Available For Download See What s New

Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet screenshots

Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) was released today and it brings updated applications, various small Unity improvements including an option to always show the menus, along with numerous bug fixes.

Under the hood, the most important change is the replacement of upstart with systemd as the default init system.

Lets take a look at whats new in Ubuntu 15.04 Desktop!

Also see whats new in: Ubuntu MATE 15.04 and the other Ubuntu flavors.

Changes in Ubuntu 15.04 Desktop (Vivid Vervet)

Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet screenshots

With Ubuntu 15.04, Unity has received a minor for some, yet important change, requested ever since Unity was first introduced on the Ubuntu desktop: an option to disable the Unity menu autohide (called "always-show-menus"). This feature works with both the AppMenu (global menu), displayed on the top Unity panel as well as LIM (locally integrated menu), displayed in the window titlebar:

Ubuntu always show menus

The "always show menu" option is not enabled by default and you wont find it in System Settings though. To use it, you must install dconf-editor and use this tool to navigate to com > canonical > unity - here you should find the "always show menus" option:

Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet screenshots

Furthermore, LIM was tweaked and it now allows accessing the menus of unfocused windows, a feature that wasnt available until now. Thanks to this, you can directly open the menu of an unfocused window by clicking on it, without having to firstly focus the window. If you dont like this behavior, you can disable it via Dconf Editor: com > canonical > unity > integrated-menus > unfocused-windows-popup.

Its important to mention that the "always show menus" feature was already backported to Ubuntu 14.04 so if youre using Trusty, you can enable it as explained above, as long as youve installed the latest Unity update.

Those are not the only menu changes in Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet)! Thanks to JAyatana, which is now installed by default, Java Swing applications now support the Unity AppMenu and HUD:

Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet screenshots

This feature wasnt backported to Ubuntu 14.04 but you can install JAyatana by using a PPA.

Other Unity and Compiz changes include:
  • Dash, HUD and the logout dialogs now work over fullscreen windows;
  • tweaks to animations for faster startup and shutdown experiences;
  • fixes for various problems that occur with the nVidia proprietary driver (mostly blank or black windows);
  • many bug fixes and small improvements.

I should also mention that LIM was set as the default menu type in Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet back in February but this change was reverted with just three days before the final Ubuntu 15.04 release.

Another visual change in Ubuntu 15.04 was made to the default GTK themes (Ambiance and Radiance), which provide better client side decoration (also known as header bars) app integration, along with other tweaks:

Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet screenshots

Unfortunately client side decoration apps dont have any shadows under Unity and at least on my system, theres an nasty visual bug caused by overlay scrollbars which makes CSD apps pretty much unusable.

And finally, heres the new Ubuntu 15.04 default wallpaper:

Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet screenshots

As for under the hood changes, the most important is the replacement of upstart with systemd as the default init system. While Ubuntu 15.04 boots with systemd by default, theres an option in GRUB to boot with upstart:

Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet screenshots

This option is useful if you encounter issues when booting with systemd - for instance some users reported a slow boot process a while back and Im not sure if those issues were fixed because this doesnt occur on my system (in fact, the boot process takes pretty much the same with systemd and upstart on my system while the shutdown process is a lot faster with systemd).

Also, Upstart continues to control user sessions.

Applications / packages

Ubuntu 15.04 ships with GTK 3.14.12 and quite a few GNOME applications were updated to version 3.14: Nautilus (for instance, Ubuntu 14.10 has Nautilus 3.10), GNOME Terminal (Utopic has an ancient version: 3.6.2), Totem (updated from 3.10.1, which is in Utopic), Evince, Eye of GNOME, File Roller (Archive Manager) and Disks, while GNOME System Monitor was updated to version 3.15.91.

Among these, there are many apps that use client side decorations by default, but they were patched to use a traditional titlebar / menu under Unity:

Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet screenshots
Document Viewer (Evince)

Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet screenshots
Videos (Totem)

Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet screenshots
GNOME System Monitor & Disks

Gedit is still at version 3.10 (3.10.4) in this Ubuntu release and its the only GNOME app that wasnt updated to version 3.14 (I hope I didnt miss any), excluding Brasero and Empathy, which didnt have a 3.14 release and are still at version 3.12.

Vivid doesnt ship with GTK 3.16 (and 3.16 GNOME apps) because GNOME 3.16 was released recently and Ubuntu 15.04 had its feature freeze on February 19th.

Its also important to mention that GNOME Shell 3.14.4 is available in the repositories (and available by default in Ubuntu GNOME 15.04 obviously), along with the 3.14.x version of GNOME Control Center, GNOME Settings Daemon, GDM and most GNOME apps like Maps, Weather, Clocks, Bijiben, Music, Photos, Boxes as well as GNOME games like Mines and Sudoku.

Other applications installed by default in Ubuntu 15.04: Firefox, Thunderbird 31.6.0, LibreOffice 4.4.2, Rhythmbox 3.1, Ubuntu Software Center 13.10, Transmission 2.84, Deja Dup 32 and Shotwell 0.20.2 on top of Unity 7.3.2 (+dailybuild).

Its also worth mentioning that Ubuntu Make (previously called Ubuntu Developer Tools Center) is now available in the official repositories. This is a command line tool which makes it easy to install various developer tools such as Android NDK and Android Studio, various other IDEs such as IDEA (ultimate and community editions), PyCharm, WebStorm, RubyMine, PhpStorm and Eclipse, Golang compiler, Firefox developer edition, Dartlang editor and Stencyl game development platform.

The tool automatically installs all required dependencies and does everything you need to run the tools listed above, including automatically adding the IDEs to the Unity Launcher for easy access.

Under the hood, Ubuntu 15.04 uses the Ubuntu Linux Kernel 3.19.0 based on the upstream 3.19.3 Linux Kernel (see whats new in: Linux 3.18 | 3.19), Mesa 10.5.2, Xorg server 1.17.1, PulseAudio 6.0 and systemd 219.

U S Consulate General Basra Dangerously Exposed but Under Iraqi Protection

Ted Koppel recently had a piece on our "exit" from Iraq for NBCs Rock Center.  In an interview with NPR, Ted Koppel noted that  all our troops will soon be out "save 157 who will be guarding the embassy, and a few hundred U.S. military trainers."

In his interview with Ambassador Jeffrey, Ted Koppel  asked the ambassador what happens if our folks there come under direct attack.  The ambassador responded that this is the responsibility of the Iraqi government.  When pushed if he was confident that the Iraqis would respond, Ambassador Jeffrey said "yes." Of course, can we really expect our ambassador there to say "no" on teevee? I am having a really bad tummy ache over this.

I posted the opening of U.S. Consulate General in Basra in this blog last July. The clip below talks about ConGen Basra with 1320 people (apparently also known as Fort Apache), which is rocketed two or three times a week. Also piece here on Shalamcha, Iraqs southern border crossing into Iran, a stone throw from Basra:

U S House Hearing on Smart Cards and Health Care Fraud

U S House Hearing on Smart Cards and Health Care Fraud

This Wednesday, Ill be testifying in a U.S. House hearing to examine options to combat health care waste, fraud and abuse. This service has rustled up memories of my time as a tech gopher at Holland Community Hospital in the 1990s when the hospital deployed second-factor authentication tokens for clinicians (i.e., 2nd factor = something you have rather than something you know). One of my tasks was to write software to quickly and effectively detect incorrect entries in the hospitals voluminous general ledger. Medical billing records. So exciting. I remember replacing lost "authentication keys" for nurses and physicians who would visit my tiny time-shared desk next to machine room for the soon-to-be-retired VAXen, line printer, and reel-to-reel backup. At the time, the authentication keys were literally shaped as plastic keys. Each clinical computer had a key reader connected via serial port. Clinicians would insert and twist the key in order to access the clinical computing systems. Removing the key resulted in automatic log out.  I am told that the system lives on today in some form nearly 17 years later.

Whats changed across the nation in terms of health care cybersecurity since the 1990s? Malware spreads by USB sticks and IP networks rather than 3.5" disks. Medical devices depend much more on networks and software. There are now so many layers of software dependencies, its hard to even inventory whats in the trusted computing base.

I still have the wooden shoe presented to the staff who helped "go live" with this clinical computing system in Holland. Stored on a shelf right above my IHTFP propeller hat.
