Ubuntu 12 04 LTS Precise Pangolin released to download

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) just released / published hours ago. But at Ubuntu.com homepage I found that they are still showing 12.04 LTS final beta notice. I visit Download Ubuntu page. Alas! I found 11.10 to download. Remember, Ubuntu officials has not published any notification at their blog or news feed. When they officially announce coming of 12.04, you will get direct link at these pages. But do you really want to download 12.04 now??

Then visit http://releases.ubuntu.com/precise/. You will get latest 12.04 non beta ISO file to download.

Ubuntu 11 10 Oneiric Ocelot Beta 1 is Released!

Not just Ubuntu Linux but almost all the GNU/Linux distributions (with few exceptions of course) make sure to release a new version of within like 6 month-cycle. And within these usual 6 months each distro has a slightly different beta release versions of their own ... but for Ubuntu Linux it usually start with "Alpha1" to "Alpha 3" and then two Beta versions (1 and 2)... then arrives the official release.

Whats new?

So, since Ubuntu has already released the Alpha3 few weeks ago, few hours ago the developers made the official announcement of the Ubuntu Beta 1!. As usual the Beta 1 comes with updated package versions + one major difference.

Starting with Beta 1, Ubuntu is letting the users download a DVD image thats about 1.5GB of size! which in comparison with the standard 4+GB ISO image.

According to the developers, this DVD image is actually the expansion of the ever growing, standard CD image thus this new DVD includes additional packages such as Inkscape, GIMP, additional language packages and more LibreOffice related files (clip-arts, templates, extension, etc) as well.

Other new features include...

*. Gnome 3.1.5 (which is on its way to the Gnome 3.2 thats going to be included in the official launch of the 11.10).

*. LightDM is the default display manager.

*. DajaDup comes pre-installed as the data backup manager.

*. New updates to the Ubuntu Application indicators system (including new power manager and a session indicator).

*. Top rated section added to the Ubuntu Software Manager + "major" speed improvements over .deb file installation according to the developers.

*. Major Core infrastructure feature: Now users of the 64-bit version of the Ubuntu Linux OS can install 32-bit packages without the need to use the separate "ia32-libs".

*. Kernel update to the version 3.0.0-9.15 which brings bug fixes and improvements.

As usual the Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu, etc distributions have also released Beta 1 versions of their own which brings latest KDE 4.7 Plasma desktop and related package updates, Amarok 2.4.3, Muon software center, pastebinit support in Xubuntu are just a few to mention.

Ubuntu 16 10 Yakkety Yak Beta 1 released Download Now

The first beta release of Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak was recently last week and its available for download. The following images are avialbel for download Lubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Studio.

According to the annoucement, this beta release will ship with Kernel 4.4, LibreOffice 5.2, and a number of other software updates that are ready for wider testing.

Ubuntu MATE 15 04 Vivid Vervet Beta 1 Released Gets Official Ubuntu Flavor Status

Ubuntu MATE 15.04 Vivid Vervet Beta 1 was released today. Lets take a look at whats new since alpha 2.

Unfortunately I didnt have time to test the other flavors (and for most of them, theres not much to say anyway), so Ill only cover Ubuntu MATE for this first beta release. However, Ill add links to the other flavors release notes (download links included), below:

I should also mention that as usual, Ubuntu (w/ Unity) doesnt take part in alpha and first beta releases.

Now back to Ubuntu MATE 15.04 Vivid Vervet beta 1. The most important news is that Ubuntu MATE is now an official member of the Ubuntu family.

The first Ubuntu MATE release was 14.10, followed by 14.04 (thats not a typo, the 14.04 release was after 14.10 because the Ubuntu MATE devs wanted to provide a LTS, since non-LTS versions are only supported for 9 months), but both versions were unofficial and used PPAs to provide the latest MATE Desktop 1.8, which is no longer the case with Ubuntu MATE 15.04 Vivid Vervet beta 1.

Since Ubuntu MATE is now an official Ubuntu flavor, all the packages it ships with are now available in the Ubuntu repositories - that include MATE Menu, MATE Tweak, its default GTK theme(s) and so on.

Speaking of MATE Tweak, the tool has received a pretty important new feature, which allows switching between different panel layouts, including: Ubuntu MATE (default), Eleven (with a top panel for the menu, systray, etc. and Plank at the bottom, as the app switcher/launcher) and more:

This also means that Plank, the default elementary OS application launcher, is now installed by default in Ubuntu MATE (but its not used by default).

+Martin Wimpress posted a video which demonstrates this new MATE Tweak feature so check it out HERE. Note that in the video there are more panel layouts than there are available in Ubuntu MATE 15.04 Vivid Vervet beta 1 by default, because it depends on the packages installed on the system and for instance, the Ubuntu Indicator Applet, which was available in previous Ubuntu MATE releases, is no longer available in Ubuntu MATE 15.04 Vivid Vervet beta 1.

The reason for this is that the default Indicator Applet / Ubuntu Indicators dont support GTK2 by default. For the previous Ubuntu MATE releases, the Indicator Applet was patched to support MATE and it was available in a PPA, but since Ubuntu MATE 15.04 is now an official Ubuntu flavor, it cant ship with PPAs enabled by default and thus, it cant use Ubuntu Indicators out of the box.

However, you can install the Ubuntu Indicator Applet along with the Sound Indicator package (patched for MATE) in Ubuntu MATE 15.04 by following THESE instructions.

Another change in the latest Ubuntu MATE 15.04 Vivid Vervet beta 1 is the addition of Folder Color by default:

Folder Color is a tool which allows changing individual folder colors (useful to organize your folders, make some important folder stand out, etc.) and besides Caja, it supports Nautilus and Nemo.

Other changes include:

added menu categories to System > Preferences;
LightDM GTK Greeter Settings was updated to version 1.10;
updated the default GTK theme (Yuko) with better GTK 3.14 support;
thanks to a GTK2 bugfix, MATE should have better multi-monitor support;
MATE Tweak allows switching between Marco and Compiz without requiring a logout/login;
added PowerPC as an officially supported architecture;
updated LightDM GTK Greeter to 2.0.0 which now includes a MATE logo in the session switcher;
merged MATE Compatibility integration into upstream Compiz .

This being a beta, there are a few known issues, most importantly: MATE 1.8x is not fully compatible with glibc>=2.43.1 and while this was fixed upstream, its not available in 15.04 yet so for now, youll have to use a PPA to get the fixes.

Other known issues include: the notification tray crashes on first start and randomly from time to time (32bit only), live switching between Compiz and Marco is experimental and may result in missing window decorations on some old GPUs (and in VirtualBox, at least that was the case in my test) and more.

Default applications/packages

Ubuntu MATE 15.04 Vivid Vervet beta 1 ships with the following applications installed by default: Caja 1.8.2, Pluma 1.8.1, Firefox 34, Thunderbird 31.4.0, LibreOffice 4.4.0, VLC 2.2.0, Rhythmbox 3.1, Shotwell 0.20.2, Pidgin 2.10.9, HexChat 2.10.1, Transmission 2.84, Cheese 3.14.1, two terminals - MATE Terminal 1.8.1 and Tilda 1.2.2 (which can be triggered via the F12 key), and Eye of Mate 1.8.0, on top of MATE Desktop 1.8.1.

Under the hood, the first Ubuntu MATE Vivid beta ships with the Ubuntu Linux Kernel 3.18.0-13, based on the upstream 3.18.5 Linux Kernel, Xorg server 1.16.2.901 and Mesa 10.5.0 RC1 (with RC2 available in the Proposed repository).

Ubuntu Tweak 0 6 Released

Version 0.6 of Ubuntu Tweak, the popular third party app for customizing Ubuntu, was released today after spending almost 2 years under development. This new version only supports Ubuntu Oneiric and newer, and Linux Mint 12 and newer.

Options for tweaking Unity, Unity 2D and Gnome Shell have been added. Other major changes include:

Ubuntu One for Windows Cloud App Client is Released!

"Ubuntu One" is the brand name for the cloud computing (storage specific) model of the Ubuntu Linux operating system. Although the Ubuntu Cloud model is an open one unlike with other models such as iClould or MS Windows Cloud version which are proprietary in nature.

I dont know much about the business oriented cloud... but Im against the idea of the personal cloud "module", because something doesnt feel right man :). Anyhow, whether its necessary or not, it doesnt matter because its at our doorsteps. And if you use Ubuntu as your primary OS then youre aware that it comes highly integrated with the Ubuntu One account which easily lets you manage your data in the Ubuntu Cloud.

But since the idea of the cloud storage is to let you access your data wherever you are, no matter what platform that youre using, then as a cloud storage service provider you must have a cross-platform ready cloud model.

As a result of this, Ubuntu One has already released its desktop front-end to other platforms such as Android and iPhone recently but the MS Windows version was still in beta. But today, Ubuntu One team announced that the Ubuntu One for MS Windows is officially available to download!.

So if you dont like to pay for anything, then Ubuntu One will give you about 5GB of Cloud space for free! (a free sign-up is necessary first). And as long as youre using any device thats powered by a the MS Windows platform and have this app installed, youll be able sync/access your data with ease.

You can create new folders, manage music, delete files, upload/download files, etc using this utility. Its about 22.3MB in size and if interested, you can get it from this official Ubuntu One for Windows page.

Canonical and Ubuntu have reached yet another milestone with the release of Oneiric Ocelot, Ubuntu 11.10. Ubuntu Tweak 0 5 5 Released

A new version of Ubuntu Tweak has been released today: 0.5.5. Theres no official announcement yet, but the new version is now available in the Ubuntu Tweak stable PPA.

Looking and the BZR changelog, theres only one new major feature in Ubuntu Tweak 0.5.5:PPA Purge (which was also available in the WebUpd8 PPA by the way), which you can now use from within Ubuntu Tweak.

PPA Purge can remove a PPA and downgrade all the packages youve installed from that PPA to the official version in the Ubuntu repositories. An example: suppose you add the c-korn/vlc PPA and install VLC 1.1.1 but you want to go back to VLC 1.0.6 which is available in the Ubuntu official repositories. Using PPA Purge, the c-korn/vlc PPA will be removed and VLC 1.1.1 will be downgraded to version 1.0.6 (theres one catch though: make sure you dont have any other PPAs with VLC 1.1.1 or 1.1.0 and so on).

PPA Purge can be found in Ubuntu Tweak under Applications > Package Cleaner.

Ubuntu Tweak 0.5.5 also brings support for Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat and also, itcan now detect if youre using Ubuntu Netbook Edition or Lubuntu.

Install Ubuntu Tweak 0.5.5:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa 
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak

Note: The Ubuntu Tweak "About" dialog currently says "0.5.4.1" instead of "0.5.5". Thats a display bug, if you have the Ubuntu Tweak PPA added and upgrade, youll have version 0.5.5.

Ubuntu 12 04 LTS Precise Pangolin Released

The latest version of Ubuntu, 12.04 Precise Pangolin, has just been released. This is a Long Term Support release, which will be supported for 5 years on both the desktop and the server. You can read the official release announcement here:

If you are used to using some Torrent client, it is recommended that you download Ubuntu 12.04 through a Torrent - particularly in the first days after the release! This would help decreasing the server load, your download might/will be faster than from a regular mirror and your download will be automatically checked for any possible corruption during download.

You'll find both the regular ISO files and the corresponding Torrent files for the various image versions here:

You can try out Ubuntu from a Live CD/USB without making any changes to your running system before you decide to actually install it, just to make sure that all of your hardware works as expected with this new version. For instructions, please take a look here:

Ubuntu 15 04 Beta 2 Released Ready for Download

Ubuntu 15.04 Beta 2 is now available for download and testing

The release is the second and final beta in the Ubuntu 15.04 development cycle and will be followed by a Release Candidate build on April 16, ahead of the final release on April 23.

Beta 2 is of particular interest as it is the first milestone release that the regular Unity-using version of Ubuntu takes part in.

What�s New in Ubuntu 15.04 Beta 2

Now, before anyone gets too giddy about seeing what�s new, remember that Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) is a �maintenance release� and will be largely similar to the 14.04 LTS and 14.10 releases made last

Bug fixes, polish and small usability improvements are the Vivid Vervet�s calling card. Even the most significant change to take place in Ubuntu for a few years, the move to SystemD as the distribution�s init system, is largely imperceptible.

Unity 7.3

Ubuntu�s default desktop shell Unity receives a fresh round of refinements this release cycle.

Locally Integrated Menus (LIM) are enabled by default in Ubuntu 15.04, embedding app menus inside the window border rather than placing them at the top of the screen � though it�s only with this beta that locally integrated menus show up on unfocused windows.

A small change as it may be it is, as we noted when the �Always Show Menus� option arrived in January, one that addresses the concerns some users had over the disappearing mouseover menus discoverability for newcomers.

If you don�t like locally integrated menus you don�t have to use them. A switch in the System settings > Appearance > Behaviour allows menus to go back to the old behaviour, so anyone who prefer their menus tucked neatly at the top of the desktop can quickly revert to their preferred way of working.

The Dash, HUD and logout/shutdown dialog now show up correctly over fullscreen windows, and minor adjustments to the animations on login and logout should make for a faster startup and shutdown experience.

Compiz 0.9.12

The well-worn Compiz window manager gains a much-needed fix from nVidia that solves issues of blank or black windows for users with the Nvidia proprietary driver enabled.

Compiz now supports the MATE desktop fully, complemented by a refresh of the gtk-window-decorator for Gnome2 support.

Application Updates

Beta testers will also find updated versions of Ubuntu�s core default app set, including the Firefox web-browser, Thunderbird e-mail client and Rhythmbox music player.

Ubuntu 15.04 Beta 2 � Flavors

Shipping their own beta wares alongside Ubuntu proper is the family of official flavors, including the newly appointed Ubuntu MATE.

The change logs for a few of these, Lubuntu and Xubuntu in particular, are fairly minimal with only a few package updates, misc improvements and bug fixes between them.

Other members are packing more substantive changes this cycle.

Ubuntu MATE 15.04 Beta 2 balms the teething issues that blighted its inaugural beta, with a few minor changes introduced as a result.

The latest versions of Folder Color and Caja (the MATE file manager) actions are both now installed by default and there�s a new lock keys applet for keyboard aficionados to get acquainted with. The MATE Menu applet is also now available as is improved support for those wanting to use Compiz desktop effects.

On the application side the Cheese webcam app has been replaced with the lighter and less fancy guvcview, but an app still great for snapping a quick desktop selfie and the new drop-down Terminal app Tilda.

Ubuntu GNOME 15.04 Beta 2 ships with last October�s GNOME 3.14 desktop shell and associated apps out of the box. While not as shiny as this weeks GNOME 3.16 release (schedules are to blame) it offers a broader set of improvements over the mix of GNOME 3.10 and 3.12 used for its 14.10 release.

As with other community flavors, Ubuntu GNOME 15.04 also comes with the latest versions of popular apps and features a new default wallpaper.

The day has finally arrived. Today Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) LTS will be released. Notable changes include:

The default music player has been changed to Rhythmbox
LibreOffice has been updated to 3.5
System Settings Appearance allows users to easier configure some of Unitys properties
Nautilus quicklist support has been added to to Unity launcher
ClickPad (as is featured in MacBooks) support has been improved

The new Ubuntu is supposedly booting very quickly and overall is very responsive.
I am looking forward to the release and will provide feedback as soon as I have upgraded.

<Update>
Apparently the Ubuntu Servers were down. I couldnt access their website and couldnt access the download-servers either. Now theyre back online and I am going to download the upgrade soon.

Upgrade broke my installation and I was unable to boot. Had to install 12.04 from scratch. Then I had some major problems with the graphics drivers. Ubuntu couldnt install the proper drivers, I then had to choose an alternative which caused my Computer to freeze about every 30 minutes.

After completely reinstalling 12.04 again (there were some other issues as well) it now seems to be working properly. No crashes so far installations seem to be working as well. Fingers crossed!

So all in all not that easy an upgrade. I just hope the 10.04 LTS to 12.04 LTS upgrade at work goes a little more smoothly.

Ubuntu Flavors 14 10 Officially Released WebUpd8 org

All the Ubuntu flavors reached version 14.10 today. Lets take a quick look at whats new in Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME and Kubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn).

Xubuntu 14.10

Xubuntu is an Ubuntu flavor which uses Xfce, a fast, light desktop environment.

Changes in Xubuntu 14.10:

the display dialog has been updated and it now allows arranging multiple displays by drag and drop;
the Xfce power manager can now control the keyboard-backlight and features a new panel plugin, which shows the battery status, other connected devices with batteries and controls the display backlight brightness;
Setting-related menu items earlier available only under Settings manager are now shown and searchable in Whisker Menu;
the alt-tab dialog can now be clicked with the mouse to select a window;
updated GTK themes with various changes, including GTK 3.12 support;
changed desktop icon size to 48px, desktop tooltip size to 64px;
the number of desktops was reduced to 1 by default, but this can easily be changed (Settings > Workspaces);

enabled lock-screen on suspend and hibernate;
Light Locker is enabled and will lock on suspend, but not auto-locking after being idle;
to allow users to use pkexec instead of gksu(do), appropriate profiles are now included for Thunar and Mousepad;
enabled clutter as default videosink in Parole;
updated panel layout for login screen;
enabled minimize and maximize on GtkHeaderbars;
XChat is no longer included by default;
Inxi, a tool to gather system information, is now included by default.

Also, Xubuntu 14.10 uses magenta highlights:

According to the release notes, this change (which they refer to as pink but it looks closer to magenta to me) was made to celebrate the 14.10 codename "Utopic Unicorn" and to demonstrate the easy customizability of Xubuntu.

Thats because this change wasnt made to the theme - the pink/magenta highlights are applied via Theme Configuration (gtk-theme-config) and is used no matter what theme youre using. You can easily change this and other theme colors from Settings > Theme Configuration (simply turn "Highlight Colors" off to turn this off):

Ubuntu GNOME 14.10

Ubuntu GNOME tries to bring a pure GNOME experience in the Ubuntu "family". It uses GNOME Shell by default and this release ships with a combination of GNOME 3.10 and 3.12.

Ubuntu GNOME 14.10 includes GNOME System Settings / Settings Daemon 3.12

Changes in Ubuntu GNOME 14.10:

many GNOME components, like GNOME Shell, GTK+, GNOME Control Center, etc. have been updated to version 3.12 which brings improvements (compared to 3.10, available in Ubuntu 14.04) such as:

proper HiDPI support;
improved network menus;
Jumplists (also known as Quicklists in Unity) support;
a geolocation indicator was added to the status menu
refined animations;
window previews are now keyboard navigable;
allow specifying monitor for OSD;
GNOME Online accounts has better Facebook and Google support and also, it now supports Pocket (a web service that lets you save videos, articles and pretty much anything from the browser for later use)
Google Cloud print support;
updated Adwaita GTK theme: new style for tabs and buttons, etc.;
GTK 3.12 introduces restyled tabs and "popovers", an overlayed bubble interface element;

GNOME Maps (3.12.2) and GNOME Weather (3.12.1) are now installed by default.

Lubuntu 14.10

Lubuntu is a lightweight Ubuntu flavor which uses the LXDE desktop environment, useful for old computers.

For Lubuntu 14.10, theres basically no changelog available - besides updated artwork, the wiki page mentions that many LXDE components have been updated with bug fix releases and that Lubuntu 14.10 is a "general bug fix release as we prepare for LXQt".

Kubuntu 14.10

Kubuntu is an Ubuntu flavor which uses the KDE Plasma Desktop as the graphical environment. Even though its now sponsored by Blue Systems and not by Canonical, Kubuntu is still an official Ubuntu derivative.

For 14.10, there are two Kubuntu ISOs available for download: Plasma 4 Stable and Plasma 5 tech Preview.

The Stable Plasma 4 ISO includes KDE Applications and Platform 4.14.1 - check out the changes here: 4.14.0 | 4.14.1.

Ubuntu 14.10 is now available for download. This release doesnt ship with any new Unity features and it includes mostly bug fixes. Still, there are some under the hood changes and of course, updated applications.

Unity 7

As you probably already know if youve been following WebUpd8 or basically any Ubuntu-related blogs, Ubuntu 14.10 ships with almost no noticeable visual changes: there are no new Unity (Unity 7) features, the default applications, even though some were updated, look the same and so on. Theres not even a new default wallpaper.

Even though there are no new Unity features, the default Ubuntu desktop shell did receive various improvements, especially on the HiDPI front: the lockscreen, Dash filters and previews and other bits were updated with proper UI scaling based on current monitor scaling:

Also, Unity can now suspend, shutdown, hibernate or start the screensaver when the screen is locked, using the Suspend, Sleep, Hibernate and PowerOff hardware keys.

systemd status in Ubuntu 14.10

Back in February, Mark Shuttleworth announced that Ubuntu will be switching to systemd (a system management daemon for Linux). Marks blog article on Ubuntu switching to systemd, called "losing graciously", denotes that he wasnt very happy with this, and systemd will made it in Ubuntu mostly because Debian switched to it.

With this release, systemd is available in the repositories and Ubuntu can boot with systemd. However, systemd is not used by default in Ubuntu 14.10 because the transition from upstart is a pretty tedious task: many packages only have upstart jobs and they need to be updated to provide corresponding systemd units. Thats why its not yet known when Ubuntu will switch to systemd by default.

Linux Kernel changes

Ubuntu 14.10 uses the Ubuntu Kernel 3.16.0-23, based on the upstream 3.16.4 Linux Kernel. Here are the major changes since Linux Kernel 3.13, which is used in the previous Ubuntu release (14.04):

zram is considered stable with Linux 3.14; zram received LZ4 compression support;
stable support for Intel Broadwell CPU graphics (3.14);
the SCHED_DEADLINE scheduling class was added to the Linux scheduler in version 3.14 of the Linux kernel mainline;
faster resume from suspend;
EFI mixed mode support: 64-bit kernels can be booted from 32-bit firmware (with Linux 3.15);
various Nouveau improvements, including initial NVIDIA Maxwell GPU support, initial GK20A and GK110B GPU support as well as support for allowing to change the frequency of the GPU from the BIOS predefined values for nv40, nvaa, and nve0 clock types;
Radeon performance improvements through improved APU power management have been enabled in some APUs;
Intel Cherryview graphics support;
NVIDIA Tegra PRIME support;
Broadwell support for the Intel P-State driver (3.16);
various other improvements to audio and sound, btrfs and ext4 improvements, better support for newer laptops and much more.

Applications / packages

Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) ships with Firefox 33, Thunderbird 31.2.0, LibreOffice 4.3.2, Nautilus 3.10.1, Totem 3.10.1, Gedit 3.10.4, Brasero 3.10.0, Eye of GNOME 3.12.2, Empathy 3.8.6, Rhythmbox 3.0.3, Transmission 2.84 and Shotwell 0.20.1. Also, Ubuntu 14.10 includes Mesa 10.3.0 and Xorg server 1.16.0.

Also, since the final Ubuntu 14.10 beta, GTK was updated from version 3.10 to 3.12 (3.12.2).

Why GTK 3.12 and not the latest 3.14? Well, thats because GNOME 3.14 was released after Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn had its feature freeze. As for the GNOME applications like Nautilus, Totem and Gedit, they are still at version 3.10 because they need to be patched to properly support Unity and with the work required to get Ubuntu for Phones ready, the developers didnt have time to update them for this release.

Other changes

Other notable changes in Ubuntu 14.10 include:

Improved hybrid graphics support:

nvidia-prime and gpu-manager now support GDM (these changes were backported to older Ubuntu versions, but without the GDM patch that allows this);
added support for "gpumanager_uxa" and "gpumanager_modesetting" boot parameters, so that there is an option to force NVIDIA Optimus systems (that dont work well with Intel/SNA) to use either Intel/UXA or modesetting);
allow RandR offloading even without bbswitch;

Netflix now works without any extra plugins in Ubuntu 14.10 (the changes were backported to Ubuntu 14.04), the only requirement being Google Chrome;
Pidgin comes with Unity support thanks to a new Unity integration plugin (can be enabled from the Pidgin Plugins > Unity Integration) - this includes (both are optional) Messaging Menu integration and Unity Launcher unread messages/conversations
Applications using client side decorations (header bars) look better under Unity with Ubuntu 14.10, but they are still not fully supported: for instance, CSD applications have no shadow, but at least the header bar looks as it should now and the windows can be resized.

Also, with Ubuntu 14.10, an Unity 8 ISO called Ubuntu Desktop Next is available a preview for "the adventurous and curious [who] want to get a preview of whats coming on their desktops soon". Unfortunately, I couldnt get Ubuntu Desktop Next 14.10 to work and Ive tried it on two different computers - theres a bug with the password but thats easily fixable as explained on the Ubuntu wiki however, upon logging in, the desktop didnt load in my test.

Overall, Ubuntu 14.10 looks (and on a side note, its also basically just as stable) pretty much the same as Ubuntu 14.04 LTS so if you only care about that, theres no reason to upgrade.

Ubuntu 14.10 is for you only if you want to take advantage of the latest under-the-hood improvements and/or you cant live without the latest version of your favorite applications (non-GNOME core apps - because most of those are still not the latest version, though some were updated) and you dont want to use PPAs.

However, keep in mind that Ubuntu 14.10 is only supported for 9 months and after it reaches end of life, youll have to upgrade to Ubuntu 15.04.
