Tricking Wubi into installing Xubuntu 12 10

1. Dowload the smallest supported ISO: lubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386.iso
2. Download xubuntu-12.10-desktop-amd64.iso (I want 64-bit, but you can use 32-bit too)
3. Check the xubuntu md5sum (Wubi will check lubuntu, but you need to check xubuntu).
4. Download wubi.exe for release 12.10
5. Make sure wubi.exe and the lubuntu ISO are in the same folder. Run Wubi and select lubuntu. 
6. When it tells you to reboot, select "Reboot later".
7. Replace C:ubuntuinstallinstallation.iso with the Xubuntu ISO (renaming to installation.iso)
8. Mount the Xubuntu ISO and copy initrd.lz and vmlinuz from the /casper/ directory over the one in C:ubuntuinstall
9. Edit the preseed.cfg file in C:ubuntuinstallcustom-installation so that it installs xubuntu-desktop instead of lubuntu-desktop
10. Reboot the computer
11. Select Lubuntu
12. Watch Xubuntu install
13. Reboot, select Lubuntu and boot into your new Xubuntu install.

Step 3: Check Xubuntu MD5 sum

Step 5: Run wubi.exe with lubuntu in the same folder

Step 6: Select to reboot later

Step 7a: Delete the existing installation.iso

Step 7b: copy the Xubuntu ISO and rename to installation.iso

Step 8: Mount the xubuntu ISO and copy vmlinuz and initrd.lz

Step 9: Set it to install xubuntu-desktop

Step 11: Select Lubuntu

Step 12: Watch it install Xubuntu

Ubuntu 12 04 LTS Desktops Support Extended to Five Years

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, code-named 'Precise Pangolin', the 4th LTS release of Ubuntu, will be supported for 5 years on the desktop as well, where it used to be supported for 3 years on the desktop and 5 years on the server with all the previous LTS releases.

It would bring hardware updates for the first 2 years of support, via regular point releases, thus keeping the product up to date with hardware changes and a further 3 years of support in the form of maintenance updates. Canonical seems to have recognized the increasing demand for Ubuntu desktops in corporate environments where longer maintenance periods are normal. Canonical has also recognized that 70% of the server users are deployed with LTS versions of the product, and as the desktop versions are reportedly similarly popular in businesses, they are now bringing the same extended support on the desktop as well, to keep it in line with the server versions.

So, the journey continues, Ubuntu 12.04 is to be released in 2 days from now, on the 26th of April, and we've already got our hands on the next Ubuntu version, 12.10. We've got the release schedule, we've got the codename, and the development is just about to begin.

Yesterday, Mark Shuttleworth has announced on his blog the codename for Ubuntu 12.10: 'Quantal Quetzal'. Quetzals are strikingly coloured birds (Wikipedia), and probably this name has got something to do with reshaping the look of Ubuntu with version 12.10. Although it isn't that easy to remember, pronounce and spell at the moment, we'll eventually get used to it rather soon. You can take a look at all the codename suggestions for Ubuntu 12.10 here.

Ubuntu 12 04 new DNS and VPN issues

In Ubuntu 12.04 theres 2 major changes with regards to DNS resolving:
1. resolvconf is now used by default
2. a local resolver is now hardcoded into network manager and is used by default

This means that youll see nameserver 127.0.0.1 in your /etc/resolv.conf at all
times, while the real DNS config is managed by dnsmasq started by NetworkManager.
You can see the current DNS config in /run/nm-dns-dnsmasq.conf

My issue was that one of the VPN providers wasnt properly sending the search domain, so I couldnt access the servers by names on this network.

The easies solution is to add the DNS and search domains manually

If you have ubuntu desktop but want to switch back into booting into a gui-less mode then simply run the following command.

echo "manual" | sudo tee -a /etc/init/lightdm.override

Now reboot and you will boot into a console rather than a GUI.

To get your gui back, simply run the command:

sudo lightdm

To revert this change and automatically boot into a GUI in future, simply run this command

sudo rm /etc/init/lightdm.override

Ukraine Sees Bitcoin Investments Up 500 in 12 Months

Ukraines Bitcoin investment figures have shot up 500% in a single year, according to Bitcoin Ukraine founder Andrey Dubetskiy.

Dubetskiy: Growth Reasons Same Throughout The World

The figures, which Dubetskiy revealed in comments to local news resource Payspace, represent growth from 500,000 hryvnia ($18,400) to 2.5 million ($92,000) hryvnia per week through 2016.

"The reasons behind the growth are the same as those throughout the world," he told the publication.

Specifically, distrust of national currencies, an unstable economy, asset movement restrictions, the shadow economy, little choice and regulation of financial instruments, demand for digital and global financial instruments, growth potential for Bitcoins price as an investment and many others.

Ukraine has become an active participant in both Blockchain studies and Bitcoin as a consumer asset.

Despite its recent turbulent political and economic history, cryptocurrency usage has been fostered � or at least left untouched by premature regulation � and continues to serve as an investment alternative to the hryvnia, which since 2014 has lost two thirds of its value.

Localbitcoins volumes in Ukraine have also seen their best times ever in recent months, with weekly trading edging towards new highs each week.

"Considering the general upward trend in Bitcoins exchange rate, the majority of customers are buying in order to profit from speculative operations, while some investors transfer a part of their assets to Bitcoin," Mikhael Chobanyan, CEO of local exchange Kuna.io, added.

Weak Economy + Bank Crisis = Blockchain

In a bid to bail out its creaking economic infrastructure, Ukraine was forced to nationalize main lender Privatbank last December amid concerns "panic" would arise if things were left as is.

"Other banks would not be getting their loans back from PrivatBank, a series of bankruptcies would begin, and there would be panic," Oleksandr Savchenko, head of Kyivs International Institute of Business, commented on the situation prior to the move being finalized.

On the Blockchain front meanwhile, a scheme involving the Central Bank to introduce the technology to governmental processes appears to be gaining momentum.

Q3 last year saw publication of a roadmap from the National Bank of Ukraine for its Cashless Economy scheme, which set out ways and deadlines for use of Blockchain in cases such as payments.

"The [National Bank of Ukraine (NBU)] Board has approved and presented a roadmap for Cashless Economy, which will use Blockchain technology in Ukraine for the first time," spokesman Konstantin Yarmolenko wrote�on Facebook at the time in a post subsequently removed.

Elsewhere, Ukraine was the first country in the world to launch sanctioned Bitcoin futures trading on its national exchange. Investor interest was also given as the main motivation for the move, which authorities announced in the midst of the Privatbank debacle.

Tutorial Install Printer Canon Pixma 1980 in Linux OpenSUSE 12 2

1. Download the driver file Canon Pixma 1980 (1900 series) from this link: Driver Canon Pixma 1900 series. Downloaded file is named iP1900_RPM_printer.tar. Save this file in your directory, for example save in /home/user/Downloads.
2. Install additional packages: libtiff3. Default package of OpenSUSE 12.2 is libtiff5, so for libtiff3 we must download from OpenSUSE Build Services that is community repository. How to install libtiff3, using this commands:

   zypper ar download.opensuse.org/repositories/graphics/openSUSE_12.2
   
   zypper ref
   
   zypper in libtiff3

3. Extract the downloaded driver file and then installing with this following commands:
   

   cd /home/user/Downloads
   tar -xvf iP1900_RPM_printer.tar
   
   zypper in *.rpm

   Directory /home/user/Downloads is the directory where you save the driver file. With this command, openSUSE will automatically connect to repository for installing necessary driver.
4. After the driver installation is complete, connect the printer cable and turn on.
5. Run YAST > Hardware > Printer and add printer with the following existing wizard. Choose driver "Canon iP 1900 series ver 3.00" according the downloaded driver.
   
   
6. You can test to print using Canon Pixma 1980 in OpenSUSE 12.2.

Ubuntu 12 04 LTS Precise Pangolin Released

The latest version of Ubuntu, 12.04 Precise Pangolin, has just been released. This is a Long Term Support release, which will be supported for 5 years on both the desktop and the server. You can read the official release announcement here:

If you are used to using some Torrent client, it is recommended that you download Ubuntu 12.04 through a Torrent - particularly in the first days after the release!
