Ubuntu MATE 16 10 Yakkety Yak Gets A Unity HUD Like Searchable Menu
MATE HUD, a Unity HUD-like tool that allows searching through an applications menu, was recently uploaded to the official Yakkety Yak repositories, and is available (but not enabled) by default in Ubuntu MATE 16.10.
MATE HUD is a fork of i3-hud-menu, which weve covered recently, with a few changes:
- xprop was replaced with a Python implementation;
- rofi is used instead of dmenu;
- rofi is automatically themed based on the current GTK theme;
- the settings (including configurable keyboard shortcut) are stored in Dconf (org > mate > hud).
Slightly off-topic: Rofi is a lot like dmenu, with various improvements, like mouse support (allows selecting items using the mouse; dmenu does not). Furthermore, Rofi provides a window switcher, run dialog and SSH launcher. Check it out HERE. Youll find Rofi in the official Ubuntu repositories (15.10+).
Like i3-hud-menu, MATE HUD has some limitations, like not supporting Qt applications, Firefox, Thunderbird, or LibreOffice. It can also break the LibreOffice menu completely, as long as the "libreoffice-gtk" desktop integration package is installed. Check out our i3-hud-menu article for more information.
To try MATE HUD, you need to be running the latest Ubuntu MATE 16.10 Yakkety Yak. After installing all the available updates, you should see an option in MATE Tweak (under "Panel") that allows enabling MATE HUD:
If you cant see this option, make sure youve installed all the available updates (if youre using a repositories mirror, it may take a while until the package is synced). Alternatively, you can install MATE HUD using the following command:
sudo apt install mate-hud
Once installed, restart the session (logout/login) and enable MATE HUD from MATE Tweak.
The default keyboard shortcut for opening MATE HUD is Ctrl + Alt + Space. This can be changed using Dconf Editor, under org > mate > hud.

Ubuntu MATE 15.04 Vivid Vervet Beta 1 was released today. Lets take a look at whats new since alpha 2.
Unfortunately I didnt have time to test the other flavors (and for most of them, theres not much to say anyway), so Ill only cover Ubuntu MATE for this first beta release. However, Ill add links to the other flavors release notes (download links included), below:

I should also mention that as usual, Ubuntu (w/ Unity) doesnt take part in alpha and first beta releases.
Now back to Ubuntu MATE 15.04 Vivid Vervet beta 1. The most important news is that Ubuntu MATE is now an official member of the Ubuntu family.
The first Ubuntu MATE release was 14.10, followed by 14.04 (thats not a typo, the 14.04 release was after 14.10 because the Ubuntu MATE devs wanted to provide a LTS, since non-LTS versions are only supported for 9 months), but both versions were unofficial and used PPAs to provide the latest MATE Desktop 1.8, which is no longer the case with Ubuntu MATE 15.04 Vivid Vervet beta 1.
Since Ubuntu MATE is now an official Ubuntu flavor, all the packages it ships with are now available in the Ubuntu repositories - that include MATE Menu, MATE Tweak, its default GTK theme(s) and so on.
Speaking of MATE Tweak, the tool has received a pretty important new feature, which allows switching between different panel layouts, including: Ubuntu MATE (default), Eleven (with a top panel for the menu, systray, etc. and Plank at the bottom, as the app switcher/launcher) and more:
This also means that Plank, the default elementary OS application launcher, is now installed by default in Ubuntu MATE (but its not used by default).

Note that in the video there are more panel layouts than there are available in Ubuntu MATE 15.04 Vivid Vervet beta 1 by default, because it depends on the packages installed on the system and for instance, the Ubuntu Indicator Applet, which was available in previous Ubuntu MATE releases, is no longer available in Ubuntu MATE 15.04 Vivid Vervet beta 1.
The reason for this is that the default Indicator Applet / Ubuntu Indicators dont support GTK2 by default. For the previous Ubuntu MATE releases, the Indicator Applet was patched to support MATE and it was available in a PPA, but since Ubuntu MATE 15.04 is now an official Ubuntu flavor, it cant ship with PPAs enabled by default and thus, it cant use Ubuntu Indicators out of the box.
However, you can install the Ubuntu Indicator Applet along with the Sound Indicator package (patched for MATE) in Ubuntu MATE 15.04 by following THESE instructions.
Another change in the latest Ubuntu MATE 15.04 Vivid Vervet beta 1 is the addition of Folder Color by default:
Folder Color is a tool which allows changing individual folder colors (useful to organize your folders, make some important folder stand out, etc.) and besides Caja, it supports Nautilus and Nemo.
Other changes include:
- added menu categories to System > Preferences;
- LightDM GTK Greeter Settings was updated to version 1.10;
- updated the default GTK theme (Yuko) with better GTK 3.14 support;
- thanks to a GTK2 bugfix, MATE should have better multi-monitor support;
- MATE Tweak allows switching between Marco and Compiz without requiring a logout/login;
- added PowerPC as an officially supported architecture;
- updated LightDM GTK Greeter to 2.0.0 which now includes a MATE logo in the session switcher;
- merged MATE Compatibility integration into upstream Compiz .

This being a beta, there are a few known issues, most importantly: MATE 1.8x is not fully compatible with glibc>=2.43.1 and while this was fixed upstream, its not available in 15.04 yet so for now, youll have to use a PPA to get the fixes.
Other known issues include: the notification tray crashes on first start and randomly from time to time (32bit only), live switching between Compiz and Marco is experimental and may result in missing window decorations on some old GPUs (and in VirtualBox, at least that was the case in my test) and more.
Default applications/packages
Ubuntu MATE 15.04 Vivid Vervet beta 1 ships with the following applications installed by default: Caja 1.8.2, Pluma 1.8.1, Firefox 34, Thunderbird 31.4.0, LibreOffice 4.4.0, VLC 2.2.0, Rhythmbox 3.1, Shotwell 0.20.2, Pidgin 2.10.9, HexChat 2.10.1, Transmission 2.84, Cheese 3.14.1, two terminals - MATE Terminal 1.8.1 and Tilda 1.2.2 (which can be triggered via the F12 key), and Eye of Mate 1.8.0, on top of MATE Desktop 1.8.1.
Under the hood, the first Ubuntu MATE Vivid beta ships with the Ubuntu Linux Kernel 3.18.0-13, based on the upstream 3.18.5 Linux Kernel, Xorg server 1.16.2.901 and Mesa 10.5.0 RC1 (with RC2 available in the Proposed repository).

More fun stuff added to Ubuntu 14.04 "Trusty Tahr". This time, the lockscreen received a much needed update. To me, the most important aspect about this change is the fact that, lockscreen actually got faster and better-looking at the same time. On the other hand, Ubuntus new borderless theme for window decorators looks absolutely gorgeous!

I mean, look at that. Its a far cry from what we had earlier. The new Unity lock screen is nimble, fast and great-looking, all the the same time. The overall responsiveness is simply mind-blowing. This is how it should have worked from day one. The new lock screen is designed to look like Ubuntus default login screen even though it is not LightDM based.
Now the window decorators. The default Ambiance and Radiance themes will be borderless in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS "Trusty Tahr". Its yet another small change that will make a big difference in the overall visual appeal of upcoming Ubuntu.
First it was that small change to Unity spread that made headlines. Then the LIMs came and now this, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS is starting to look like a true blockbuster in the making.

Ubuntu 12 04 LTS Gets the Official Code Name!
As most knows, with almost all the other GNU/Linux distributions (or other major software projects in general), Ubuntu also assign a code name every time they release a new version of their operating system. The current version number is 11.04 has the code name of "Natty Narwhal" and the upcoming 11.10 is called "oneiric ocelot".
Im not a marketer thus have very little knowledge about how or why code names are used... but I guess it has something to do with branding. Anyhow, few hours ago, Mark Shuttleworth announced (the founder of Ubuntu OS) the official name for the upcoming 12.04 which will be released in 2012 April (if everything goes according to plan) and itll be called, Precise Pangolin!.
As always, Mark had something interesting to say about the name (or the creature behind the name actually)...
"Now, I�ve recently spent a few hours tracking a pangolin through the Kalahari. I can vouch for their precision � there wasn�t an ant hill in the valley that he missed. Their scales are a wonder of detail and quite the fashion statement. I can also vouch for their toughness; pangolin�s regularly survive encounters with lions..."Anyway, the 12.04 release has another importance also since its the "Long Term Support" (a.k.a LTS) which is for those who just cant stand for having to update their OS once every 6 months. So, once every 2 years a LTS version is released which carries no particular differences in packages but will be supported by Ubuntu (updates, bug fixes, etc) up to 3 years for the desktop edition and 5 years for the Ubuntu Sever Edition.
And in somewhat a recent interview, Mark said that they "might" replace Firefox with Google Chrome which could have happened with the 12.04 version but since its the LTS version ... it wont. But it could be something thatll take place in the 12.10, perhaps.
Anyhow if youre wondering about the official code name for the upcoming Ubuntu 12.04 (both LTS and the standard versions)... then its Precise Pangolin and its all about surviving the "lion"!.

If you have installed a 5.1 Surround Sound system on your computer that happens to be running Ubuntu Linux instead of MS Windows :D, then wouldnt it be nice if you could make/add an awesome 5.1 surround log-in sound?.
I mean, of course you can find a 5.1 audio file but wouldnt it make everything so much better if we somehow find a re-mastered 5.1 version of the current official Ubuntu Log-in sound?. Well, thanks to Dustin Kirkland (an Ubuntu core developer and an active member of the Ubuntu Server development staff), we now actually have a re-mastered, official 5.1 surround sound for Ubuntu!.

So, as a result, you can install the 5.1 log-in sound in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, 11.10, 10.10 and 10.04 by using the below commands.
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:kirkland/soundNow, log-out of the system and re-login and if everything went well then you should hear it:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-sounds
Starting off with the center speaker, going towards the front left and right channels then going into the back left/right speakers while the bongo rocking the hell out of your world using your Sub Woofer!. Enjoy!.
