Unable to install AOL Desktop with blank error message Windows Vista

Unable to install AOL Desktop with blank error message Windows Vista

I recently was asked to resolve another problem with AOL Desktop - the Main.idx had disappeared from the AOL profile folder within ProgramData and the program could not start. After some checks, I decided to completely uninstall and reinstall the AOL software. Although the removal was straightforward, I could not reinstall the software no matter which way I tried. The following error message kept appearing, followed by a completely white square that could only be closed using Task Manager.

Honestly, could this error be any more helpful?
Fortunately, the solution was simple - uninstall Adobe Flash Player for Internet Explorer (ActiveX). As the customer was using Windows Vista, this was unlikely to cause a problem since the latest version of Internet Explorer that runs on Vista is 9.0. This is too old to be useful, and another browser such as Google Chrome or Mozilla FireFox is required for regular browsing. I did not try reinstalling Flash Player after successfully installing AOL Desktop, so Im not sure if similar problems would have returned or not.

Coincidentally, my very next job was also for someone running Windows Vista with a similar problem, though this was with the software for a Brother scanner. Instead of the usual controls for scanning images and files, a white space in the shape of the original program appeared. As before, uninstalling Adobe Flash Player for Internet Explorer did the trick, although the customer did comment that the program looked a bit different than it did before.

I think its likely that there is a problem with Adobe Flash Player 20 and Windows Vista, or perhaps with Internet Explorer 9, or perhaps with any number of different programs - who knows?

Unable to verify certificate for vCenter on Horizon View Connection Server

Unable to verify certificate for vCenter on Horizon View Connection Server

Recently during an outage of my host during to hardware issue in my home lab where my vCenter 6.0 sit on it, resulted some strange behaviour on my View Connection Server 6.1.  I encounter the below error message:

When I go to my Horizon View Dashboard, it looks fine.

When I try to remove the vCenter entry under the Server options and adding it back I end up with another error when trying to add the View Composer.
However this is not related to the strange behaviour above.  But rather this is due to my login did not contain a domainusername but instead of use just username.

Back to the strange behaviour.  It seems my connection to my vCenter via Connection Server has a sudden slowness and the certificate seems to be corrupted.  I tried to find a solution to replace the self-signed (in my case) certificate on my View Connection Server however in vain.  I tried removing the vCenter and re-adding it back, that does not help.

So I chanced upon some steps by our internal team and use it to resolve my problem and it works.

In summary, this is what was done.  First we backup the ADAM database and then we invalid the entry of the vCenter in View Connection Server.  Then we try to add the existing vCenter again.  So now we have two entry of the vCenter where oneis an invalid entry.  Taking from the valid entry certificate thumbprint, we overwrite the invalid ones and remove the latter vCenter entry.  Next revert back the entry to previous valid entry.

Here are the detailed steps that help me resolved my issues.

To manually regenerate data:

Note: Back up the ADAM database before proceeding. For more information, see Performing an end-to-end backup and restore for View Manager (1008046).
  1. Log in to the machine hosting your View Connection Server. If there is a cluster of View Connection Servers, this step can be done on any of the servers.
  2. Click Start > Run, type cmd, and click OK. The command prompt opens.
  3. Run this command, substituting a name for your back up file.

    vdmexport > ViewBackupFilename.ldf

  4. Connect to the ADAM database. For more information, see Connecting to the View ADAM Database (2012377).
  5. Expand OU=Properties > OU=VirtualCenter.
Note the entry is is after expanding the OU=VirtualCenter.
  6. Document the first four characters of the vCenter Server entry, for example CN=f030. Right-click the vCenter Server entry and click Properties.
  7. Document these three values:

    • pae-NameValuePair. Note the entry here and then remove it.
    • pae-SVIURL. Note the entry and set to a value similar to https://OFFvComposer.domain.com:18443
    • pae-VCURL. Note the entry and set to a value similar to https://OFFvCenter.domain.com:443/sdk
  8. In the View Administrator portal, refresh the dashboard to confirm the name change you made.
Do note that changes are reflected at two different location.
  9. In View Configuration > Servers > vCenter Server, add an entry for the proper
  10. Open the properties page for each vCenter Server entry.
  11. Manually copy these values from the new vCenter Server entry to the old vCenter Server entry:

Note: Take a note of the entries before copying. When copying these values, copy and paste directly between properties sheets or copy to a plain text editor that does not add any formatting such as Windows Notepad.exe.

    • pae-SVISslCertThumbprint
    • pae-SVISslCertThumbprintAlgorithm
    • pae-SVIUserName
    • pae-SVIUserPassword
    • pae-VCSslCertThumbprint
    • pae-VCSslCertThumbprintAlgorithm
    • pae-VCUserName
    • pae-VCUserPassword
  12. Remove the new vCenter Server entry from the View Administrator webpage.
  13. Undo the three changes you made at the beginning of the process, including adding the UNIQUEID=XX value back into pae-NameValuePair and rename the pae-SVIURL and pae-VCURL.
  14. Reboot all Connection Servers in the replicated group.
  15. In the View Administrator webpage, refresh the Dashboard page again and confirm vCenter Server and Composer are both shown correctly and are now showing as green status.
  16. Proceed with testing provisioning and recomposing, as well as login functionality.

Unable to fetch Ubuntu Archives 404 Not found IP 91 189 92 201 80

Unable to fetch Ubuntu Archives 404 Not found IP 91 189 92 201 80

If you are unable to fetch  archives in Ubuntu, there may be few of the reasons:

  1. Either your dns lookup failed,
  2. Or your archives lookup address got changed.
I will highlight both of the possibilities and represent you the solutions.

If your dns lookup failed, you can follow the below steps:
  • First, take the backup of the /etc/resolv.conf file by running the following command

  • Add the following entries in the original /etc/resolv.conf file

  • Save the file and restart the network using the following command

  • It may be possible that your ubuntu gets hanged as happened to mine. There is no need to panic, you can run the following command to get your system working

Or, your archive address got changed ( 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.201 80] )

Again if you are getting the same error while fetching archives, then that means your archive has changed.
And the best way to determine is check whether you are getting the following error

If this is the case follow the steps below:

  • First take the backup of the /etc/apt/sources.list by running the following command

  • Change the name from the archive.ubuntu.com to old-releases.ubuntu.com

Thats it.. .Definitely your update will work now ....

Unable to remove Office 365 Domain

Unable to remove Office 365 Domain

With Cloud on the loose, Microsoft has offered a very flexible platform which allows organizations to easily subscribe for trials or even register for a tenant on the fly. However, without a proper clean-up would create additional hassles and steps, especially if the Global Admin is no longer around or the login credential has been misplace  and this what happened to me in a recent Office 365 engagement.

In this implementation, we were supposed to activate the actual domain (Example: mydomain.com) to a new Ofifce 365 tenant. However, when attempting to associate the corporate domain into the Office 365 tenant, the portal had detected that our domain has been used and activated with another tenant for Microsoft Power BI purposes, to make things complicated, nobody knows whom own the other domain.

To regain control of the corporate domain, wed to create an automated generated TXT record to proof that were the actual and will be the Global Admin taking over the Power BI tenant. After which wed to remove the corporate domain that has been configured with the Power BI tenant but were thrown with an error message:

Dependencies on domain. To remove this domain, youll have to remove the following dependencies first.

Remove_Domain01

When expand, the alias and Skype addresses indicate the users which has been assigned within the tenant, although there wasnt any Exchange Online and Skype for Business Online licenses are available. In the end, wed to use PowerShell to remove the corporate domain:

  • Connect-MsolService
  • Remove-MsolDomain -DomainName $mydomain.com -Force

Refresh the Admin portal and we manage to remove the corporate domain that was initially assigned to the Power BI tenant and migrated it to the actual Office 365 domain.

Unable to see the LOGIN Screen after Startup

Unable to see the LOGIN Screen after Startup

After unexpected shutdown, I wasnt able to view my login screen after startup in Ubuntu. This problem occured due to some errors in your display manager. So, in order to solve this problem, we need to change the display manager. Follow the below steps in order to solve this issue.

If you are also facing the same problem , following is the solution.

1. Go to Advanced options for Ubuntu.

Fig. 1

2. Select the recovery mode.
Fig. 2

3.Select the root option from the recovery menu.
Fig. 3

4.After selecting the root option you will get the command line. Enter the following commands:
       $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm
After running the above command  you may get either the fig. 5 screen or fig. 4 screen followed by screen 5.

Fig. 4

Fig. 5
Here you will be shown different display manager. You can choose any default display manager. So if your previous manager was gdm you can choose lightdm.

Now one more issue you can face when you select lightdm or any of the display manager.
If you get the following error run the following command else restart the system:
"Read-only file system error while selecting any of the display manager."

For that, you can run the following command :
$ mount -o remount /

and then again run the following command:
 $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm

5.And then run the exit command. Restart the system. You will get the login screen.

6. Now one more issue may arise: It may be possible that you get the login screen but you may not be able to login into your system. It may be possible even after entering the correct username and password you get only the login screen. For that you need to follow the below steps:

Press Ctrl+Alt+F3 and login into the shell.
Now run ls -lah. If in the output the line
-rw------- 1 root root 53 Nov 29 10:19 .Xauthority
then you need to do chown username:username .Xauthority and try logging in.
Else, do ls -ld /tmp. Check for the first 10 letters in the left: they should read exactly so: drwxrwxrwt.
drwxrwxrwt 15 root root 4096 Nov 30 04:17 /tmp
Else, you need to do sudo chmod a+wt /tmp and check again.
If not both, Id recommend you either
    1. dpkg-reconfigure lightdm
    2. or uninstall, reinstall it.
Now press Alt+-> until you reach the login screen again, and restart.

In case if you need any assistance just put up the comment and I will look into it.

Unable to add ppa behind proxy

Unable to add ppa behind proxy

While trying to add softwares from sources other than the central debian repository, we may have to add a PPA (Personal Package Archive), so that the software(apt or aptitude) which installs other softwares fetches packages for us from the new location.

The default or normal method to add a PPA via command line is as follows:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:something

However, if you are behind a proxy, you may not be able to add this way and when you try to do something like this:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3

you may get an error like this:

Cannot access PPA (https://launchpad.net/api/1.0/~gnome3-team/+archive/gnome3) to get PPA information, please check your internet connection.

This may happen even if you have added your proxy using System Settings -> Network -> Network proxy or in /etc/apt/apt.conf or even in /home/$USER/.bashrc. This is because the sudo user is not aware of the proxy set in the places above. This tutorial explains how to make this work to add a PPA the terminal way.

So lets get started. Please note that all commands and text hereon are case-senstive, take care not to make any typos hereon, to avoid messing up your system):

  • Open a terminal using Ctrl + Alt + t
  • Type
    export http_proxy="http://username:password@your proxy":"port"
    export https_proxy="https://username:password@your proxy":"port"
Remember to replace "username" by your username and "password" by your password, if applicable, "your proxy" by your proxy address like 10.1.101.150 or proxy.college and "port" by something like 3128.
  • Now we have two methods to export these parameter to "sudo" user:
    Method 1:
  • Type sudo visudo
  • Add Defaults env_keep="https_proxy" to the end of the file. (Note that Defaults has a capital "d")
  • Type Ctrl + x and yto save and exit.
    Method 2:
  • Whenever you use sudo command, export the environment variables of the user you are currently using. To do this, when you use sudo, use sudo -E

You are now ready to add PPA using the terminal. Please let me know, via comments, if you face any issues while doing this.
