Unable to remove Office 365 Domain

Unable to remove Office 365 Domain

With Cloud on the loose, Microsoft has offered a very flexible platform which allows organizations to easily subscribe for trials or even register for a tenant on the fly. However, without a proper clean-up would create additional hassles and steps, especially if the Global Admin is no longer around or the login credential has been misplace  and this what happened to me in a recent Office 365 engagement.

In this implementation, we were supposed to activate the actual domain (Example: mydomain.com) to a new Ofifce 365 tenant. However, when attempting to associate the corporate domain into the Office 365 tenant, the portal had detected that our domain has been used and activated with another tenant for Microsoft Power BI purposes, to make things complicated, nobody knows whom own the other domain.

To regain control of the corporate domain, wed to create an automated generated TXT record to proof that were the actual and will be the Global Admin taking over the Power BI tenant. After which wed to remove the corporate domain that has been configured with the Power BI tenant but were thrown with an error message:

Dependencies on domain. To remove this domain, youll have to remove the following dependencies first.

Remove_Domain01

When expand, the alias and Skype addresses indicate the users which has been assigned within the tenant, although there wasnt any Exchange Online and Skype for Business Online licenses are available. In the end, wed to use PowerShell to remove the corporate domain:

  • Connect-MsolService
  • Remove-MsolDomain -DomainName $mydomain.com -Force

Refresh the Admin portal and we manage to remove the corporate domain that was initially assigned to the Power BI tenant and migrated it to the actual Office 365 domain.

UK goverment planning to ditch Microsoft Office for FOSS alternatives

UK goverment planning to ditch Microsoft Office for FOSS alternatives

The inevitable switch is happening everywhere. Governments and public offices around the world is slowly waking up to the hard fact that proprietary software may not be in their best long-term interest after all, even if you ignore the cost-factor. News about City of Munichs switch over to Linux made big waves recently, so did the news about French Armys switch to Ubuntu with primary focus on cost-cutting. UK government is the latest divulge their plans to completely switch-over from proprietary "oligopolies" to freer alternatives.

UK government planning to ditch Microsoft Office for LibreOffic

UK government planning to ditch Microsoft Office for LibreOffice and such
Guardian UK is reporting that, Ministers within UK government are looking at saving tens of millions of pounds a year by abandoning expensive software produced by firms such as Microsoft. Some 200m has been spent by the public sector on the Microsofts Office suite alone since 2010, which is staggering when you consider the fact that there are free and almost equally-good alternatives on the other side.

Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude believes a significant proportion of that outlay could be cut by switching to software which can produce open-source files in the "open document format" (ODF), such as OpenOffice and Google Docs.

Document formats are set to be standardised across goverment offices to help break the "oligopoly" of IT suppliers, and improve communications between civil servants. The proposal is part of the coalitions drive to make its procurement more effective and efficient.

Turin becomes the first Italian city to adopt Ubuntu and Open Office saves millions of Euros!

turin adopts ubuntu over windows

Turin, Italy joins the French city of Toulouse and German city of Munich in the mass adoption of open source and Linux as the official alternatives saving millions of Euros in licensing cost and other charges. News like these are becoming more commonplace these days. Major cities in the world are choosing Linux primarily because of cost-benefits, and Microsoft is finding it harder and harder to explain the huge costs involved with its products.

Turin adopts Ubuntu and Open Office, saves 6 million Euros
Economic hardships are bringing the best out of administrators and strategists alike, as the City of Turin recently found out. The city administrators calculated that, updating the licences for all the PCs running Windows products will cost them a whopping 22 million Euros over a period of 5 years! At the same time, adopting Linux and open source alternatives will actually save them 6 million Euros during the same period.

Turins administrators has decided to go with open alternatives and specifically chosen Ubuntu Linux distribution, Apache OpenOffice office suite and programs such as Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird. Citys 8,300 odd municipal offices will start seeing the changes soon.
