Ubuntu is popping up everywhere. Googles Project Tango video and driverless car project were recent examples. Then there was this news about French Armed Forces adoption of Ubuntu en masse. Everything points to a brighter future for Ubuntu OS. It almost seems like Ubuntu and Linux are slowly becoming the de facto choice for enterprise users.

Uber CLI is a tool to get time-to-pickup and price estimates for Uber from the command line. The application cannot be used to request Uber rides.

This is useful if you use Uber and the command line a lot, as its much faster than checking these details on your phone, especially if you create some Bash aliases for your home address and the places you frequently use Uber to get to.

The developer says that he created Uber CLI because "[...] as a lazy person it pains me every time [I] open my phone, open the Uber app, type my destination, and see the estimated price, only for my inner, responsible, cost-cutting, fiduciary-self to end up taking the bus all the way home. I think we can all agree that it would be much more efficient to simply be disappointed before I open my phone at all".


Installing and using Uber CLI


1. To install Uber CLI, youll need Node.js and npm.

For Ubuntu 16.04 and newer, you can use the Node.js and npm packages from the official repositories:
sudo apt install nodejs npm

For Ubuntu versions older than 16.04, youll need a newer Node.js/npm version. This can be installed by using the official Node.js repository. Youll find exact instructions HERE (in my test I installed Node.js 6.x in Ubuntu 14.04 and uber-cli installed without any issues).

2. Install Uber CLI

Before proceeding, you may wish to set up npm to allow installing packages globally without sudo. For how to do this, see our previous article. You can skip this and use the command below with sudo, but thats not recommended!

To install Uber CLI, simply type the following command in a terminal:
npm install uber-cli -g

Thats it. You can now start using Uber CLI. To get a time-to-pickup estimate, use the following command:
uber time pickup address
replacing pickup address with the address the Uber ride should pick you up.

Heres an example:
$ uber time 10 downing street london uk

You may skip the city and country - in my test, this worked without any issues, but I assume it is required in cases where there are multiple streets with the same name, etc.

To get price estimates, use the following:
uber price -s start address -e end address
replacing the start and end addresses with the actual locations.

Heres an example:

The blank cells in the examples above are Emoji, but I removed them so the columns dont get messed up. To get Emoji support in Linux, install the EmojiOne Color SVGinOT font (but note that it doesnt work properly with monospace formatted text and causes incorrect character alignment, or at least thats the case at the time Im writing this).

Try Toggl A Cross Platform Time Tracking And Reporting Tool


I recently stumbled upon Toggl, a tool that provides online time tracking and reporting, and thought Id share it with those of you who need such an application and are not yet familiar with it.

Toggl offers free, as well as paid plans, and you need to register to be able to use it. The free plan offers time tracking, timeline, autotracker, team management features (for up to 5 members), exporting reports as PDF or CSV, and much more. Check out the Toggl plans HERE.

Furthermore, Toggl integrations with various services such as Wunderlist, GitHub, Trello, Google Docs, and many others.

You can use Toggle directly from its website or by using its desktop applications for Linux (64bit only binaries; source code available), Windows and Mac, Firefox and Chrome addons, as well as mobile (Android and iOS) apps.

Both the time entries and active timers are synchronized using the Toggl cloud service across all applications as well as the Toggl website, which also offers various detailed reporting features.

Features available in the Linux desktop application (which uses Qt5 and is open source) include:
  • syncs time entries and active timers with the Toggl cloud service;
  • record timeline (it records websites and applications that you view for more than 10 seconds; this feature is not available the first day after signing up for Toggl);
  • idle detection (notifies you about idle time and lets you choose whether to keep the time, discard it or add it to a new entry);
  • option to remind to track time;
  • pomodoro timer and break timer;
  • global keyboard shortcuts to show or hide Toggl and to continue stop the timer;
  • a tray/appindicator (the icon changes depending on the app state: recording/stopped);
  • offline login after youve logged in at least once online;
  • grouped time entries;
  • proxy support.

A few features are missing in the Linux desktop application, like an option to show the timer in the panel, adding new tags or editing tags (you can only select already existing tags), as well as the autotracker feature (this feature allows defining applications or keywords that trigger the tracker).

Despite of this, Toggl is a great tool, especially for those who work on multiple computers / operating systems, thanks to its synchronization feature.


Getting started with Toggl Desktop application for Linux


To get started with Toggl, create an account (you can also sign up with Google), download the application and log in.

Note: for Linux, Toggl Desktop is available as a deb and generic tar.gz, both for 64bit only. If you want to use Toggl Desktop on 32bit, youll have to built it from source. Also, pay attention to the Linux download page - on Ubuntu 16.04 and newer, youll have to install gstreamer 0.10, which is no longer available in the Ubuntu repositories (exact instructions are provided for how to do this).

Arch Linux users can install Toggl Desktop via AUR: toggldesktop | toggldesktop-bin.

Before starting to track your time, you may want to take a look at the Toggl Desktop Preferences and enable the options you need, like global shortcuts to show or hide Toggl, continue/stop the timer, enable the Pomodoro time and so on:

Then simply enter a description for your task and click the "Start" button:

Right clicking a task allows accessing some advanced options, like assigning a project to the task, change its duration, start and end time, date, assign tags, as well as an option to delete it:

I should also mention that the Toggl Desktop application for Linux lacks an option to start automatically on system startup. To get it to start with your computer (assuming youve installed it using the .deb package), open Startup Applications, click "Add", enter "Toggl" under name and "/opt/toggldesktop/TogglDesktop.sh" under "Command".

This guide will help you to install and configure the netatalk servise on an Ubuntu server so it can function as a Time Machine backup server for your Mac OS machines.

First install the necessary packages:
sudo apt-get install netatalk avahi-daemon libnss-mdns
Open the netatalk default configuration file:
sudo vi /etc/default/netatalk
Modify the lines:
ATALKD_RUN=yes
PAPD_RUN=no
CNID_METAD_RUN=yes
AFPD_RUN=yes
TIMELORD_RUN=no
A2BOOT_RUN=no
Edit the atalkd.conf file:
sudo vi /etc/netatalk/atalkd.conf
add to the bottom
eth0
Edit the AppleVolumes.default file:
sudo vi /etc/netatalk/AppleVolumes.default
add to the bottom:
/backups/timemachine "Time Machine" allow:@admin cnidscheme:cdb volsizelimit:200000 options:usedots,upriv,tm
The example above also limits the size shown to OS X as 200 GB (the number is given in MiB, so its 200,000 times 1024 in the real world)

Edit the afpd configuration file:
sudo vi  /etc/netatalk/afpd.conf
add to the bottom:
- -transall -uamlist uams_dhx.so,uams_dhx2.so -nosavepassword -advertise_ssh -mimicmodel TimeCapsule6,106 -setuplog "default log_warn  /var/log/afpd.log"

Create a configuration file for the avahi afpd discovery:
sudo vi  /etc/avahi/services/afpd.service
and enter the following into it:
