Try Chrome OS Canary Without Risking Your Chromebooks Stability
Try Chrome OS Canary Without Risking Your Chromebooks Stability
Theres been some buzz recently about Kenny Strawns discovery of Chrome OS Canary (nice work Kenny!). If youre not aware, Canary is a version of Chrome OS that is even more up to date with code changes and new features than dev channel. So it goes stable --> beta --> dev --> canary with stable being the most stable, reliable and least often updated version and canary being the least stable and least reliable but most often updated. A Canary version of the Chrome browser has been available and can be run in parallel with other Chrome channels on Windows and Mac for some time but theres been no publicly known equivalent for Chrome OS until Kennys discovery and normally, your Chromebook is only on one channel of Chrome OS, switching between channels meant a USB recovery or powerwash.
So Canary is going to give you the latest and greatest Chrome OS features weeks or months before stable channel gets them but you sacrifice the stability of your Chromebook because Canary isnt tested nearly as heavily as stable channel is. What if we could run stable channel on our Chromebook and only boot into Canary channel when we wanted to test something or check out a new feature? Wouldnt that be handy? Well, here are instructions:
- To get started, make sure your Chromebook is in developer mode. Model-specific instructions can be found here.
- Turn your Chromebook off then turn it back on but do not login. Make sure you have a WiFi or Ethernet connection configured at this point. 3G/4G is not recommended. Press CTRL+ALT+=> (=> is the forward arrow where the F2 key would be on a PC). Do not use the normal CTRL+ALT+T method to get a shell. Use the CTRL+ALT+=> method while no one is logged in.
- Login as user chronos, no password is needed.
- Run the command:
sudo crossystem dev_boot_usb=1
this tells your Chromebook to allow booting from USB / SD Card. Note that not all Chromebooks can boot from all USB or SD Card ports. For example, the Acer C710 cant boot from an SD Card and the Samsung Chromebook cant boot from the blue USB 3.0 port. Youll need to use a port on your device that supports booting. When in doubt, start with one of the black USB ports and go from there. - Stick a USB or SD Card of at least 8gb size in your Chromebook and run the command:
rootdev -s -d
youll get output like:
/dev/sda
or it might say /dev/mmcblk0. Whichever it is, that is the device for your Chromebooks primary drive. - Now run:
sudo fdisk -l | grep Disk
this will list out all drives your Chromebook sees. Your Chromebooks main drive will be listed and youll see some devices we dont care about like /dev/mapper/blahblahblah. Were looking for the USB or SD Card you inserted (compare sizes). On an Intel Chromebook with a USB drive its likely to show as /dev/sdb, with an SD Card its likely to be /dev/mmcblk0. On a ARM-based Chromebook, a USB drive is likely to be /dev/sda and a SD Card, /dev/mmcblk0. Make sure youve got the right device and remember what it is for the next step. - Now we can run:
sudo chromeos-install --skip_src_removable --skip_dst_removable --skip_vblock --dst <insert /dev/whatever from above step>
chromeos-install is a script to copy Chrome OS to another drive. Normally the script is meant to copy from a removable device to a SSD or hard drive but were going in the reverse direction, thus we need the --skip_src_removable and --skip_dst_removable options to turn off those checks. The --skip_vblock option is needed to prevent an error message that should not matter anyway. The --dst option allows you to specify the destination device you determined in the previous 2 steps. So on my Intel-based Pixel Chromebook and using a USB drive I would run exactly:
sudo chromeos-install --skip_src_removable --skip_dst_removable --skip_vblock --dst /dev/sdb
this command will output some details about the install process and may spit out errors if theres trouble copying to your drive (USB drives and SD Cards fail after awhile, get a new one if you need it). - When the process completes, your Chromebook will reboot. Now with the USB/SD Card still inserted, if you press CTRL+U on the keyboard at the ugly computer screen youll boot from your new installation on the external card instead of the internal drive. Youll probably notice its slower, USB 2.0 is very slow compared to SSDs. On first boot, the Chrome OS installation on the external drive will want to repair itself by wiping out the stateful partition (note that this is the stateful partition on your external drive, not the one on your internal drive which should remain untouched). Eventually, after a reboot, you should see Chrome OS boot to the setup process.
- Lets confirm were booted off of the external device by running:
rootdev -s -d
this time, we should see the USB/SD Cards device listed instead of the internal SSDs so we know were running off the external device. - Now weve got a separate Chrome OS install that we can boot into at will with CTRL+U instead of CTRL+D but we need to switch it to Canary channel. Thats easy enough to do by running:
sudo update_engine_client --channel canary-channel
sudo update_engine_client --update
this will install the latest Canary channel update for us on the external device, again leaving the internal device untouched. Now were up and running! Canary channel without the risk.

Try Vocal A Podcast Manager Designed For elementary OS
Try Vocal A Podcast Manager Designed For elementary OS
Vocal is a podcast manager designed to integrate tightly with the elementary OS desktop, which supports both audio and video podcasts, with built-in video playback.

The application doesnt have every feature you can think of and instead it focuses on what its supposed to do: play podcasts while taking care of everything automatically, without going through N tabs of settings.
For instance, Vocal can stream episodes without having to download them locally however, if you want to save some episodes for offline listening, Vocal can do that too - it can even automatically check for and download new episodes in the background.
Another useful feature is its library management: Vocal can automatically delete old downloads so you dont have to worry about doing this yourself.

Also, since the app was designed for elementary OS, it integrates perfectly with the Pantheon desktop: it comes with native notifications, launcher count and progress bar support, media keys support and Sound Menu integration.
Other Vocal features include:
- you can assign custom skip intervals for the skip forward and backwards buttons, useful if for instance youve missed something or to jump past an advertisement;
- episode position saving, you can can easily start an episode from where you left off;
- supports library import/export (can import from iTunes, gPodder, etc.).
For those are new to podcasts, the Vocal website offers "starter pack" which contains a selection of great podcasts which you can add either individually or as a complete .opml pack which you can import into Vocal. Note that in my test, the imported podcasts didnt show up in Vocal until I restarted the application.
While the app reached version 1.0 recently, there are a couple of missing features: Vocal lacks a search/filter and it cant download feeds which require authentication, but hopefully theyll be added in a future release.
Its important to note that while Vocal was designed for elementary OS, it should work on any desktop environment that supports header bars (also known as client side decorations) and has GTK 3.14 or newer. As far as *buntu is concerned, Vocal should work on the following:
The app should also work on elementary OS Freya (obviously), Fedora 21 or 22, etc.

- Ubuntu GNOME 14.10 with GNOME 3 updated to version 3.14 via PPA.
- Ubuntu 15.04 (with Unity) - partially, because the app wont have any shadows and to avoid various parts of the app being transparent (bug caused by overlay-scrollbar), youll need to launch the app like this: "LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0 vocal".
The app should also work on elementary OS Freya (obviously), Fedora 21 or 22, etc.

Download Vocal (packages available for Fedora and Ubuntu-based distros)
Important: youll also need to download the Granite framework packages (available on the Vocal downloads page) if youre not using elementary OS or Ubuntu 15.04, or else you wont be able to install the app.
If you encounter bugs, report them @ Launchpad.

Ubuntu Linux 16 10 Yakkety Yak Beta 2 open source OS now available for download
Ubuntu Linux 16 10 Yakkety Yak Beta 2 open source OS now available for download
Today, the final beta of the upcoming Ubuntu Linux 16.10 becomes available. While this version -- dubbed Yakkety Yak -- will not reinvent the wheel, it should offer enough to delight existing users of the open source operating system. Hey, if its not broke, why fix it, right? That is a lesson Microsoft learned the hard way with Windows 8, but I digress.
"Codenamed Yakkety Yak, 16.10 continues Ubuntus proud tradition of integrating the latest and greatest open source technologies into a high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution. The team has been hard at work through this cycle, introducing new features and fixing bugs", says Steve Langasek, Developer, Canonical.
Langasek further says, "the beta images are known to be reasonably free of showstopper CD build or installer bugs, while representing a very recent snapshot of 16.10 that should be representative of the features intended to ship with the final release expected on October 13th, 2016".
While there arent many new aspects, there are some significant changes. The Linux kernel has been updated to 4.8 and the included GNOME apps have all been updated to 3.20 and higher. The wonderful LibreOffice is now at version 5.2.
If you are ready to download Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak, you can use the below links. Desktop users will most likely want to select Ubuntu Desktop (Unity), but I recommend Kubuntu and Ubuntu GNOME too. Want to install Google Chrome on the operating system? You can follow our how-to guide here.

Tweakforce Releases Xtreme G 305 68 an All OS Driver
Tweakforce Releases Xtreme G 305 68 an All OS Driver
Tweakforce has released Xtreme-G 305.68, a tweaked GeForce driver. Whats peculiar about this release is that it has a version for each and every Windows OS starting with XP, something that Semp (the owner of the site) hasnt done in a long time.
This driver gave me a performance boost in a Lightsmark 2008 benchmark run. Also, its a boon for Darksiders 2 players looking for an antialiasing fix as the Darksiders 2 3D profile in this driver works---enabling FXAA smooths out all the jagged edges in the game (as of August 28 4am GMT+8 THQ has yet to fix this).
You can see the latest benchmark results and the link after the jump.

Transforming your Ubuntu 8 04 Desktop to look like Mac OS X
Transforming your Ubuntu 8 04 Desktop to look like Mac OS X
Please read THIS, the link points to an Updated Article for Ubuntu 11.04.
MAC OS has been traditionally known for their impressive graphical interface and stability. Now
In this tutorial i describe step by step how to make your Ubuntu 8.04 desktop look more like MAC OS X Leopard :) .
Installing Cursor , GTK and Icon Theme
To install cursor, gtk and icon theme first download the package from the link given below :
http://rapidshare.de/files/38210507/MyTheme.tar.gz.html
Now to install the theme package we have created in the above step , go to (System -> Preferences -> Appearance) and click Install and point to our newly downloaded Mytheme.tar.gz archive.

This should start installing the theme package (Cursors/Icons/Theme) once installation is completed . Chose Customize in theme and click on Customize .

You will find a window like this:

Customize Dialog Box

Enabling Compiz Graphic Effects and installing Mac4Lin Theme
Ubuntu 8.04 comes with Compiz Fusion pre-installed and on supported hardware offers a wide array of Visual Effect . Now depending on graphic hardware of computer one could chose from three level of Visual Effect (From System -> Preferences -> Appearance )
None : - This mode causes Ubuntu to use Metacity instead of Compiz Fusion , with no visual effect
Basic : - Has only simple visual effects like shadows , fading windows-menus etc
Advanced : - Recommended for PC with descent graphic hardware , enables effects like wobbly windows, transparency , animated workspace switching etc
Visual Effect Dialog BoxHowever , compiz-fusion is capable of much more and you can enable more desktop effects /customize compiz by typing the following command in the terminal window : -
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-managerAfter completing above step , you can customize compiz by going to System > Preferences > Advanced Desktop Effects Settings .
After installation is over , open Terminal from (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal ) and issue the following command to install emerald which is necessary for using themes in compiz .sudo apt-get install emeraldAfter installation is over download MacOS X Emerald theme from this link : http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Mac4Lin+Leopard+Emerald+Theme?content=68409
Now open (System -> Preferences -> Emerald Theme Manager )
After Emerald theme manager opens click on import and point to the downloaded theme package from withing the Theme Manager , you will find Mac4Lin Theme listed select the theme , click on refresh and quit the application .
Emerald Theme Manager Mac like Dock with Avant Window Navigator
IMPORTANT : - To use AWN Compiz-Fusion should be up and running as mentioned in the step above
Avant Windows Navigator is cool little tool that allows you to have a cute looking dock at the bottom of the screen . Even though AWN is still very buggy, still because it is so feature rich and cool looking you could install it .
To install AWN you need to add extra repositories, now adding any additional repository carries certain amount of risk of screwing up your system so follow these step at your own risk :
To add repository :
echo "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/awn-testing/ubuntu hardy main" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list
and
echo "deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/awn-testing/ubuntu hardy main" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list
After issuing above command type the following command to update your repositories :
sudo apt-get updateanf finally to install AWN issue the following command in the terminal window :
sudo apt-get install awn-manager-trunk awn-extras-applets-trunkNow after completing above mentioned steps AWN should be properly installed , To Launch AWN go to (Applications -> Accessories -> Avant Window Navigator )
Now you could customize AWN by choosing to add more applets , configuring 3D effects for AWN etc by going to AWN Manager ( System -> Preferences -> Awn Manager )

Three ScreenShots of AWN Manager
Though the theme which AWN comes with preinstalled is also good , you might like to try this its cool and very Mac like
http://rapidshare.com/files/71511920/Transparent.tgz.html
you could install this theme through AWN Manager go to (System->Preferences->AWN manager) and go to themes there and click on "Add" and point it to the downloaded theme.

You will see a confirmation dialog box that theme has been added properly. Close AWN Manager and start it again and chose the theme just installed and press apply button to make this theme default theme of AWN.
This is how my AWN Dock looks(with the above theme installed) like : -
AWN-DOCK
http://rapidshare.com/files/71511920/Transparent.tgz.html
you could install this theme through AWN Manager go to (System->Preferences->AWN manager) and go to themes there and click on "Add" and point it to the downloaded theme.

You will see a confirmation dialog box that theme has been added properly. Close AWN Manager and start it again and chose the theme just installed and press apply button to make this theme default theme of AWN.
This is how my AWN Dock looks(with the above theme installed) like : -
AWN-DOCKDesktop Widgets with Screenlets
Screenlets gives user a collection of impressive widgets that can be placed on desktop this is similar to feature available on Windows Vista and Mac OS X Dashboard , it gives impressive look to the desktop.
To install Screenlets type in the following command in the terminal window :
sudo apt-get install screenlets
Now , After the installation is over you can add Widgets/Screenlets on your desktop by going to (System -> Preferences -> Screenlets ) , you will find a dialog box like this from where you could add Screenlets onto the desktop .Also you might like to tick the checkbox "Autostart on login" so screenlets starts automatically when Gnome starts.

Changing the Log In Screen / GDM Theme
To change the Log In Screen/GDM Theme download the package from website listed below : http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/OSX+Session+Login?content=68346
After downloading the package , open (System -> Administration -> Log in Window ) and there go to Local and click on Add and point to the downloaded theme package (osx-login.tar.gz) . Now you would find OSX-Login theme listed in the window , select OSX-Login and close the window . Logout and Login again you should find the new theme installed .
Log-in Window allows easy changing of the Login Screen ThemeGetting MAC OS X Leopard Wallpaper
Finally you can get MAC OS X Leopard wallpaper from the following website :
