Largo dunque allo Zapus Piccante (e saltatore)!

Di seguito vi riporto il testo integrale del post di Mark Shuttleworth con lannuncio ufficiale

The naming of Ubuntu releases is, of course, purely metaphorical. We are a diverse community of communities we are an assembly of people interested in widely different things (desktops, devices, clouds and servers) from widely different backgrounds (hello, world) and with widely different skills (from docs to design to development, and those are just the ds).
As we come to the end of the alphabet, I want to thank everyone who makes this fun. Your passion and focus and intellect, and occasionally your sharp differences, all make it a privilege to be part of this body incorporate.
Right now, Ubuntu is moving even faster to the centre of the cloud and edge operations. From AWS to the zaniest new devices, Ubuntu helps people get things done faster, cleaner, and more efficiently, thanks to you. From the launch of our kubernetes charms which make it very easy to operate k8s everywhere, to the fun people seem to be having with snaps at snapcraft.io for shipping bits from cloud to top of rack to distant devices, we love the pace of change and we change the face of love.
We are a tiny band in a market of giants, but our focus on delivering free software freely together with enterprise support, services and solutions appears to be opening doors, and minds, everywhere. So, in honour of the valiantly tiny leaping long-tailed over the obstacles of life, our next release which will be Ubuntu 17.04, is hereby code named the Zesty Zapus.

PS: La domanda ora nasce spontanea. Ora che siamo arrivati alla Z che schema verr usato per le versioni future? Si ricomincia lalfabeto daccapo?
PPS: Ecco un video che mostra la tipica camminata dello Zapus

Ubuntu 17 04 Zesty Zapus Daily Build is Available For Download

Ubuntu 17 04 Zesty Zapus Daily Build is Available For Download

What is Zesty Zapus ?

Zesty is an adjective meaning great enthusiasm and energy. It can also mean that something tastes rather citrusy (as citrus fruit peel is called zest).

Zapus is the genus name of a North-American meadow jumping mouse. The cute little rodent is said to be the only mammal on Earth that has a total of18 teeth. Everyone needs a claim to fame, right?

Expect to see Google adjust to the new name over the coming weeks. Right now, a Google for the Zesty Zapus throws up some canny autocorrect suggestions:

And now, wed like to inform our Ubuntu Linux users about the fact that the Ubuntu Kernel Team is currently tracking early Release Candidate versions of the upcoming Linux 4.9 kernel for Ubuntu 17.04 (Zesty Zapus), but, for now, they are waiting for more mature RC builds to land before pushing the new kernel to the repositories.

"We are still tracking early v4.9-rcs for Zesty. This work can been found here: https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/unstable," writes Joseph Salisbury on behalf of the Ubuntu Kernel Team. "We will wait for a few more -rc releases before preparing an upload for Zesty."

Ubuntu 17.04 Zesty Zapus

Mark writes of the codename: right now, Ubuntu is moving even faster to the centre of the cloud and edge operations. From AWS to the zaniest new devices, Ubuntu helps people get things done faster, cleaner, and more efficiently, thanks to you. We love the pace of change and we change the face of love.

We are a tiny band in a market of giants, but our focus on delivering free software freely together with enterprise support, services and solutions appears to be opening doors, and minds, everywhere. So, in honour of the valiantly tiny leaping long-tailed over the obstacles of life, our next release [is called Zesty Zapus].

Download Ubuntu 17.04 Daily Build

Those of you like to live on the bleeding edge and/or want to get involved in helping to test Ubuntu 17.04 can do so by downloading a daily image for use in a virtual machine or to install on a separate partition/device.

Dont expect much in the way of major changes this early on. Itll be a good couple of months before big user-facing changes are made.

Toolchains have been updated though, which is important if youre a developer, and an influx of updated packages, libraries and toolkits will shortly spill in.

Hit the button below to navigate over to the Ubuntu image server. Here youll find daily builds of Ubuntu 17.04 in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

Ubuntu 17 04 Zesty Zapus Alpha 2 has Released and Available For Download

Ubuntu 17 04 Zesty Zapus Alpha 2 has Released and Available For Download

The second alpha of the Zesty Zapus (to become 17.04) has now been released!

Ubuntu 17.04, code named Zesty Zapus, is the future release that will succeed Ubuntu 16.10, and even though its End of life date has been scheduled for January 2018, the development team aims to bring a lot of upgrades, fixes, and additions in this release.

This milestone features images for Lubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu GNOME, and Ubuntu Budgie.

Pre-releases of the Zesty Zapus are not encouraged for anyone needing a stable system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent breakage. They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu flavor developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting and fixing bugs as we work towards getting this release ready.

Alpha 2 includes a number of software updates that are ready for wider testing. This is still an early set of images, so you should expect some bugs.

While these Alpha 2 images have been tested and work, except as noted in the release notes, Ubuntu developers are continuing to improve the Zesty Zapus. In particular, once newer daily images are available, system installation bugs identified in the Alpha 2 installer should be verified against the current daily image before being reported in Launchpad. Using an obsolete image to re-report bugs that have already been fixed wastes your time and the time of developers who are busy trying to make 17.04 the best Ubuntu release yet. Always ensure your system is up to date before reporting bugs.

Ubuntu 17.04 Release Schedule
Key dates during the Ubuntu 17.04 milestone are as follows, as listed in the official Ubuntu 17.04 release schedule:

Alpha 1 29 December (for flavours)
Alpha 2 26 January (for flavours)
Feature Freeze 16 February
Beta 1 23 February (for flavours)
UI Freeze 9 March
Final Beta 23 March
Kernel Freeze 30 March
Release Candidate 9 April
Stable Release 13 April

Be sure to mark the Ubuntu 17.04 release date in your diaries folks!

The Zesty Zapus will be supported  for 9 months after release with select app updates, bug fixes and critical security patches, including new releases of Mozilla Firefox.
