Ubuntu 9 10 Karmic Nvidia settings parse fail with xorg conf

There is a bug in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic with the default /etc/X11/xorg.conf involving Nvidia. If you try running kdesu nvidia-settings or gksu nvidia-settings, then try to save with "Save to x confguration file" button, but receive the error:

Failed to parse existing X config file /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I found the problem by running:

sudo nvidia-settings 2>/dev/null

VALIDATION ERROR: Data incomplete in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
Undefined Device "(null)" referenced by Screen "Default Screen".

Erreur de segmentation

My default /etc/X11/xorg.conf looks like this:

Section "Module"

EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Default Device"
Driver "nvidia"

EndSection

The final version (before you edit it with the nvidia-settings program) should look like this:

Ubuntu 9 10 prochaine version est nommée Karmic Koala

Mark Shuttleworth fondateur de Ubuntu a r�v�l� vendredi des plans pour Ubuntu 9.10, qui sera baptis� Karmic Koala. Le plan des d�veloppeurs �tait � apporter Cloud capabilities � l�dition serveur dUbuntu, de stimuler les performances de d�marrage sur l�dition de bureau, et de continuer � travailler sur la saveur de la NETBOOK distribution.

Ubuntu adh�re � une base cyclique de temps de six mois. La prochaine version majeure, la version 9.04, la jaunty Jackalope soriente vers gel� et son lancement est pr�vu en avril. Ubuntu 9.10, qui sera la prochaine version apr�s jaunty, est pr�vue pour Octobre.

Ubuntu 9 10 est Karmic Koala et il ne sera pas marron!

En plus davoir un joli nom, Ubuntu 9.10 aura d�normes am�liorations � la fois dans le serveur et desktop �ditions. Pour le serveur, il englobera lAPI dAmazon EC2 rendant facile pour quiconque de mettre en place leur propre Could en utilisant des outils enti�rement open source. Pour le desktop, il y aura des changements: Ubuntu pourra utiliser Red Hat Plymouth boot graphique en faveur de lUsplash. Un d�marrage plus rapide est aussi envisag�.

Ubuntu one on Karmic Koala

Ubuntu one is a free on line file sharing service offered by Canonical. The newly released ubuntu 9.10 has Ubuntu One tightly integrated with it. For using this service , you have to sign up with Ubuntu one. Click on this link and fill in the details to get a free account which can hold upto 2 GB. A mail will come to you mail account asking you to confirm the subscription.

Once you have completed the registration and confirmed , the ubuntu one account can be set up on your karmic koala desktop.

Click on Applications >> Internet and click Ubuntu One. The following window will pop up.

You can set the preferences for show icon ,connect on start and bandwidth.

The web browser will be launched and you will be taken the the launchpad website and asked to login. Once you login you will again be asked to confirm whether you want to add you computer to Ubuntu One. Once you agree, the Ubuntu one menu item will come under . See the picture below.

You can use this folder as any other normal folder on your computer.


This folder will be under your home directory. If you open a terminal and move to ~/ Ubuntu One/ folder, you can see the off-line contents on your hard disk. If you open the folder in nautilus, a special connect / disconnect button appears. You can use this to connect to the Internet and update your files on the Ubuntu one servers.
