Ubuntu 10 10 Will Get Unity Ubuntu Light Interface

Ubuntu Light with Unity launcher

Mark Shuttleworth just announced a version of Ubuntu for the dual-boot called Unity and a range of Light versions of Ubuntu, both netbook and desktop, that are optimised for dual-boot scenarios. These "Light" Ubuntu versions are optimized for the web.

The Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.10 Maverick will get a new panel on the left of the screen which will be used for launching and switching between applications. This panel can be expanded so it is touch-friendly.

The top panel wont be removed since it will be used for the Global Menu which we aleady talked about as well as the window title.

But like Mark said, the Unity interface will also be available for the Desktop, with a dual-boot for instant web access (known as Ubuntu Netbook Light and Ubuntu Desktop Light). However, Ubuntu Light for the Desktop will only be available for OEMs, and you wont be able to download Ubuntu Light from ubuntu.com:

Given the requirement to customise the Light versions for specific hardware, there won�t be a general-purpose downloadable image of Ubuntu Light on ubuntu.com.

Unity

Unity already exists and can be installed from a PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:canonical-dx-team/une
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install unity

Then logout and then log back in selecting Unity UNE Session from your login screen.

However, Unity for Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.10 will evolve a lot and wont look like it is today. There is currently a mock-up available with an app called Dash which presents files and applications as an overlay. The inspiration for the Dash comes from consoles and devices, which use full-screen, media-rich presentation. We want the Dash to feel device-like, and use the capabilities of modern hardware:

Unity will use Mutter for window management, and Zeitgeist will be an anchor component of the file management approach. The interface itself is built in Clutter.

Unity already has its own page @ http://www.canonical.com/products/unity. The webpage says that Ubuntu Light boots to the web in seven seconds on a Dell Mini 10v.

Ubuntu Developer Summit (UDS)

More news on Unity will probably come soon, as the Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat development has already started. Also, UDS is not over yet, so things we might get some new announcements.

Mark Shuttleworth also announced at Ubuntu Developer Summit today that "The Perfect 10" will have new icons, new fonts and many other desktop improvements. Also, he said that Ubuntu 10.10 is set to be released on October 10, 2010 (thats 10.10.10).

Ubuntu Package Management Part 5 Basic Synaptic

This beginners guide Part 5 explains how to use Synaptic Package Manager, an easy to use GUI program to manage software packages. Synaptic is a replacement to Apt-Get command line for casual end-users, it provides complete options in simple and user-friendly manner. By using Synaptic, you can do easy sources.list editing, proxy + auth setting, install/remove/upgrade package, and so on. And this guide is a continuation of Part 4 PPA & Third-Party Repository. I hope this will be easy and useful for everyone.

Usage Basic

In using Synaptic, there is a basic usage in 4 points from novice users point of view:

user chooses an action or some actions,
Synaptic does wait for users decision,
user decides to Apply the chosen action/actions
Synaptic does perform the action/actions

In other words, Synaptic will never do install/remove/upgrade package unless the user explicitly decides the action(s) to do. Synaptic is safe to use even for complete beginners.

Reload

The term "Reload" means downloading the "repository maps" mentioned in your system sources.list. Reload is just the same as $ sudo apt-get update command. To do it, press Reload button.

Search Package

To search a package, type your keyword on the "quick filter" search bar. If you dont see this search bar, click "Search" button.

Install Package

To install package, search for a package > click on white box on the left of the package name > select Mark for Installation > press Apply button. You may mark more than one package and apply them to be installed simultaneously.

Remove Package

To uninstall a package, enable left-panel filter "Status" > search a package > choose any of "Installed" statuses on left-panel > click on the green box on the left of package name > select Mark for Removal > press Apply button. You can mark more than one package to remove them all simultaneously.

Upgrade Package

To upgrade package, enable left-panel filter "Status" > choose "Installed (upgradable)" status > search a package > click on grey box on the left of package name > select Mark for Upgrade > press Apply button.

Repository Setting

Synaptic provides repository setting from menu Settings > Repositories. There you can control your sources.list in an easy GUI way.

Proxy Setting

To change proxy setting, you can visit menu Settings > Preferences > Network. There you can determine your proxy address and your authentication credentials (username & password).

Icon Legend

You can show the explanation of all Synaptic icons from menu Help > Icon Legend.

Select Colors. Color selections are plentitful with the included color palettes. Tools. All the tools you expect are available from the tool bar. When you have a tool selected it is activated with the right mouse (stylus) click. The tools you expect are here, eye dropper, cropping, moving, line, box, ellipse, flood fill, gradiant, masking tools, text, drawing guides, brush rotate, brush cleaner etc.

Layers. TwistedBrush includes an advanced system called Layers. With layers you can split your work into transparent layers that sit on top on each others and allow for incredible editing and adjustment options even at the end stages of your painting. A wide range of layer blending modes exist including many not available in any other painting program.

Paper Textures. Use paper textures while you draw to give the feel and look of textured paper and canvas. Over 70 different surface textures are included.

Masks. Masks are the artists masks you may be familiar with if youve done traditional artwork. TwistedBrush has an extensive set of masking capabilities that youll use to protect and manipulate areas of your work. Included is a magic wand with a number of different modes for creating your masks. Or use a common shape or one of the many masking brushes to create exactly the mask you need.

Filters. A filter allows for processing the image all at once. TwistedBrush includes the full range of image processing filters ready to use.

Tracing Paper. The tracing paper feature gives you the ability to turn your canvas into tracing paper so that you can see a reference image below it for use as a drawing guide. This is invaluable for many types of work.

Cloning. Cloning, taking image data from somewhere else and placing it into your painting, that is cloning. The source image for the TwistedBrush cloning brushes can be a different image or from another area of your current picture. The cloners can be used to render a photo as a artist drawing, or to touch-up a photo or do many things in-between.

Scripts. With scripts you can record your painting actions and play them back, recreating your painting from scratch. This has value for trying out different "what-if" scenarios, for teaching pusposes, for animation production when used with the AVI saving option or just for entertainment.

Pattern Brushes. There are a number of ArtSets that contain Pattern brushes. These brushes paint a pattern on your canvas as you paint. Adjust the size the pattern with the density slider. Categories of patterns include, surface, materials, nature and others.

Brush Shapes. Most any brush in TwistedBrush can be further enhanced with a shape.

Drawing Guides. Drawing guides are a visual aid that appears over your canvas to help you with perspective, distances, and general construction of your artwork. A large number of different drawing guides are included.

Image Brushes. Image brushes are powerful tools for both recreating the flow and feel of working with natural media but also for allowing for extraordinary painting effects. The Image Brushes : Basic ArtSet includes the brushes you need that when used in combination of captured images give you an unlimited supply of brushes.

Image Warp. When using the Image Warp tool you will be pulling, pushing, pinching, and stretching your image as if it was make of rubber or putty. These tools at the extreme case can be fun for wildly adjusting a photo as shown here. But used with more finese they are invaluble for making minor adjustments to your photos or artwork saving you countless hours or re-working in more labor intensive ways.

two extensions to my browser that I cant live without

If youre not using LastPass, get it. Its a browser extension that generates random passwords and manages all your login information. Heres a NYTimes piece on it: LINK. Cant live without it. Plus, if you use multiple browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Explorer) youll have the exact same access information all the time, regardless of which browser youre using.

Second, Bit.ly. Put their link creator in your toolbar and when you come across any article youre reading, its an easy click to grab the title of the article (or any text youve highlighted) and create a Bit.ly shortened URL. You can then send it out via e-mail or twitter. Simple, super effective.

I use both of these products dozens of times a day.
