Tutorial how to load the 1000 genomes data into Amazon Web Services
Tutorial how to load the 1000 genomes data into Amazon Web Services
The format of this tutorial is done such that it gives written instructions followed by a picture for that step.
Step 1.
Start by logging into AWS. Once you have done that, you will see this page. Click "EC2" virtual services in the cloud.
Click on "Launch Instance"
Step 3. The next page will say "launch with classic wizard." Just click "Continue."
Step 4. The next page will be titled "Request instances wizard." Just click "community AMIs tab".
Step 5. Next to the Viewing all images drop down field, type in"1000HumanGenomes."
Step 7. After that you will be taken to the instance types selection. Click the drop down arrow and select the type of instance you would like to use. I chose "M1 Large."
Step 8. Next you will be prompted to create a password in order to access your AMI. Type your password in the text field shown in the picture.
Step 9. Next you will be prompted with a "Storage device configuration" menu. Just click continue.
Step 10. It will ask you if you want to tag your instance. You can just click continue.
Step 11.
Next you will be prompted to enter your personal key pair. Enter your keypair into the text field marked in the photo.
Step 12. Next, you will be prompted to enter your security group. Just select the default one.
Step 13. In Step 13 you will be shown all the specifics you requested in the previous steps. Click Launch if they are all satisfactory.
Step 14. After that, you will be told that your instance is being launched. Click "close."
Step 15. In your instances section, check the Status Checks section. After a while, it should say "checks past."
Step 16. After that, you are done. If you have a piece of software called Linux bio cloud on a computer with a Ubuntu Linux operating system, you should be able to work with the data!

Turn off Location Services on your iPhone to Conserve Power
Turn off Location Services on your iPhone to Conserve Power
My iPhone has been driving me crazy these last few weeks. The power has been draining so fast that I need to recharge by lunch time if I still want a phone (and not a brick) by the afternoon.
Id been blaming my iPhone for being old but as it turns out, the problem was much simpler than that - It was location settings.
When you think about it, it makes perfect sense. After all, you have to assume that if your phone is going to communicate with the satellites (and other receivers), its probably going to need a bit of power to get up there. Then of course you factor in the number of apps which are using location services (its exploded since I last looked in there).... and of course, many of the apps use location services "always".
Yep, thats right... even when youre not using the phone.
So, how do you turn these things off?

The easiest way is via these three icons;
- Settings
- Privacy
- Location Services
Once you get there either slide it to the OFF position (which I did for a couple of days)
or
Go through all of the settings and set them to NEVER.
In my case, I left Camera, Google Maps and Map my Walk but only "While Using".
If theres anything that says "Always" shut it down for sure.
The proof is undeniable. Ive not made any other changes to my phone and its been going 15 hours and I still have 54% battery left.

Ubuntu One File Services Shutting Down!
Canonical has announced today shutting down the Ubuntu One cloud storage and music storage system. As a consequence further releases of Ubuntu, starting with 14.04 LTS, will not ship with the Ubuntu One file services.
However, as the blog post states
"The shutdown will not affect the Ubuntu One single sign on service, the Ubuntu One payment service, or the backend U1DB database service."
Important Dates to Keep in Mind
April 02 2014: It is no longer possible to buy additional storage or music filesJune 01 2014: Services will be unavailable (User data still available for download)
July 31 2014: All files left in the cloud will be deleted
Please read the official blogpost here: http://blog.canonical.com/2014/04/02/shutting-down-ubuntu-one-file-services/ for more information about the details.
