Ubuntu Spotted In Googles Project Soli Promo
Ubuntu Spotted In Googles Project Soli Promo
Time and again, Ubuntu keeps popping up whenever theres some Google product launch. Remember Googles Project Tango or that bit of news about the use of a lightly custmozied Ubuntu in Googles Driverless Car project? Given its widespread use inside Google, its no surprise than Google is an Ubuntu Advantage Customer.

Welcome to Project Soli
Google I/O has always been a crucible of mesmerizing tech, and it is no different this time around as well. Take a look at Project Soli for example. They are developing a new interaction sensor using radar technology. The sensor can track sub-millimeter motions at high speed and accuracy. It fits onto a chip, can be produced at scale and built into small devices and everyday objects. Though it doesnt sound as cool as it should be, one look at the promotional video, and youre sold. Project Soli looks like something straight out of a science fiction movie.
But whats even more interesting is the fact that, Ubuntu can be spotted several times being used for the development and testing of this amazing new technology. Ubuntu is becoming kind of a norm than an after-thought in the enterprise sector it seems. Even NASA and Merc was found using Ubuntu recently. Hondas ASIMO Robotics was another great find. All in all, looks like it is going to be a pretty interesting time for us, Linux fans. Stay subscribed.

Ubuntu caught in the wild again! Googles Project Tango promo video features Ubuntu

This is not much of a surprise since it is a well-know fact that Google uses Ubuntu (albeit with modifications) in their campuses. Not only that, it was confirmed by Canonical themselves last year that Google is a paying customer of Ubuntu Advantage program.

For those who are wondering, Project Tango is Googles attempt at creating mobile devices with a human-scale understanding of space and motion. See Googles Project Tango intro video below (skip to 2:07 to watch the Ubuntu reference).
"Our team has been working with universities, research labs, and industrial partners spanning nine countries around the world to build on the last decade of research in robotics and computer vision, concentrating that technology into a unique mobile device. We are putting early prototypes into the hands of developers that can imagine the possibilities and help bring those ideas into reality." Interested? Sign up here.
